APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday October 24, 2009 (MJD 55129) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shekden Kaike Pan Support: Craig Loomis (the guider loop) Kyle Dawson (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS and BOSS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Seeing was mostly good at about 1.1. The first half of night was clear. Second was partly cloudy or cloudy. Observed marvels plate: 3490B, 3632A, 3632B. Could not find guiding stars on plate 3074A (cartridge 6). Boss plates: 3609 (6 exposures), 3647 (5 exp.), and 3657 ( 4 exposures). For Marvels observation, smaller integration time for the guider should be used due to background subtraction issue. A big thank goes to Craig for looking into the problem. Problem: disk space on /home-hub25m is running low. Broken fibers of MARVELS cartridges: cart 7, pointing B: pair: 1/2, 63/64. cart 9, pointing B: pair 75/76. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 23:08Z Turned on ThAr lamp 23:09Z restarted servers 23:12Z disk space: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 124G 12G 92% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 852G 20G 98% /data sdssfiles1p:/data1/data 1.8T 274G 1.6T 15% /files hub25mp:/home 92G 88G 4.6G 95% /home_hub25m data for mjd 55117-55121 were removed from sdsshost2 and file1. Lat night, we had a problem on MARVELS plate guiding. Although star images are clearly seen in ds9, but the guiding loop could not make reliable measurements on some of these images. So stars on SM plot keep appearing and disappearing. As a result, the guider loop failed to give us reliable scale change needed. Today, Craig looking into this problem, along with others, and came out a new version of guider actor (v1_0_9). Tonight he worked remotely with observers and found that the problem was mainly caused by the fact that backgound substraction was not done very robustly. Lower integration time of the guider (from 10 s to 8 s) solved the problem tonight. It would be nice if the backgroung substraction can be done more reliably in software side. Because lower integration time for cloudy, full moon nights may not solve the problem. THANK you, Craig! 02:00Z Kyle called us and said that plate 3588 has been observed. We should not observe it tonight. 02:12Z Marvels calibs: T02:12:01.550.fits TIO 45181.910 5382.4136 T02:14:09.160.fits THAR 345.31250 757.30798 T02:18:46.870.fits TIO 48303.547 5376.0894 02:17Z goto filed on cart 9, 3632A, field Kepler4.
