APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday January 30, 2010 (MJD 55227) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (afternoon and support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Partly cloudy for the first half of the night. We closed for the last half due to high humidity and clouds. We observed: Cart 11, plate 3724 Cart 1, plate 3635B Cart 9, plate 3089A - Broken fiber: 61,62 Cart 9, plate 3089B - Broken fibers: 57,58 and 75,76 We had the same problem as before where we could not see any star or sky images within the the guiderGUI. All we saw was grey boxes, corresponding to the positions of the fibers. Since this normally happens when there is something wrong with the guider flat, we took several flats, each looked normal with ~12500 counts. Steph was contacted and she reverted us back to the current version of the guider actor (we were running the test version). Now, we were able to guide normally on cart 1, but cart 3 still has trouble guiding with any version of the guider actor. We strongly suggest that cart 3 not be used until this issue is resolved. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Cartridge 4 had been plugged today, but was not in the database. I found the instructions for Kaike's script, ran it, then all was well. All actors alive and well. 23:43Z - ThAr lamp on Test guider and boss dark taken. Test guider flat taken Test boss pre-cal taken. SoS reductions seemed slow. There was a fog bank in the basin and all the way to Westside Road. Waves of fog would wash past, making the humidity jump. As a result, ventilation was delayed. 00:21Z - Doors open, ventilation started. Night: ------ 00:50Z - Opened enclosure and filled spectrographs. 01:01Z - gotoField cart 11, MARVELS pre-selection plate 3724. The guiderGUI showed all grey squares for each fiber, meaning that we need a guider flat, but we took several and they all look ok. We took a look at the actual guider images, and they were normal - showed several guide stars. We had this problem several times before. 02:00Z - Moved on to the side B of this plate. No guide stars, nor sky background in the fibers. Just grey boxes corresponding with the fibers. Called Steph. We revented back to the current version, and the stable version or the guider actor, with still no effect. We then remounted cart 1 ()a more stable cartridge) to try again with the current version of the guider. It worked. We are able to see sky. So, the test version of the guider is faulty and cart 3 still is having issues. 02:54Z - Mounted cart 1, MARVELS plate 3635B. GSFOGTF. 03:05Z - 50 min exposure.
