APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 17, 2010 (MJD 55518) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (afternoon) Craig Loomis (via STUI) Paul Harding (via STUI) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Flex engineering ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The first few hours of the night were given to Craig and Paul who performed many scale/focus/guiding tests. Afterwards we homed and relaxed the mirrors, mounted the engineering camera, and then completed, implentmented, and checked the pointing model. Cartridge 13 somehow got stuck when we removed it from the telescope. It seemed that something got caught on the sp1 slithead (we guess) and the cartridge dangled an inch or so off of the elevator with the latches unlatched for a few moments before we raised the lift back up. When we attempted to dismount the cartridge again very carefully, we had no problems. We examined the cartridge afterwards and did not find anything obviously wrong or out of place. We informed French. When we observed cart 3, plate 3705A at the end of the night, we noticed that there was hardly any signal on the PMT even though the seeing was not too horrible. We tried switching the gang connector from field A to field B, and the signal drastically improved. French was informed and he will investigate it later. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The day crew was working on b1 camera removal for the triplet replacement. This delayed checkout at the telescope. Analyzed and checked in new fiducial tables for tonight's pointing model. 23:33Z - Doors opened, ventilation started. 00:25Z - Mounted cartridge 18, opened enclosure, checked fiducials. 00:35Z - Craig and Paul were busy working on software changes at sunset. Night: ----- 00:25Z - Opened enclosure and filled spectrographs. 00:45Z - gotoField cart 18, plate 3520. After failing to take decent flats and guide, paul and craig found that the fibers were slightly rotated. Frech was in the room at the time and he mentioned that him and his crew removed screws from the bending ring of cart 18 in preparation for tests on it tomorrow. 01:35Z - Mounted cart 13 for guider/scale tests. 02:52Z - TypeError in plate database: not all arguements converted during string formatting. 03:33Z - Rebooted MCP and verified that the fiducials are v1_90. Mounted engineering camera and powered it on. Checked balance and fiducials. 04:21Z - Telscope at 30 degrees altitude; scale to 1.0 and the focus to 0. Gathered mirror numbers - secondary mirror axials are off. Sent the telescope to 70 degrees to home and relax mirrors. Focus is finally good. egalil port did not allow us to home the camera. We had to logout the port several times, but still no luck on landru or minidru, nor Steph's laptop. We are going to press on and leave the stage where it is.
