APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday August 11, 2001 (MJD 52133) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Stephanie Snedden (swing) (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Eric Neilsen (FNAL) Bruce Gillespie (APO) Visitors: Rhett Muse (Channel 7 News, Albuquerque) An astronomer and two budding astronomy summer students from NRAO Socorro whose names we didn't get. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Check pointing model, then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Weather prevented observations. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon tasks: ---------------- The DA checked out fine, but we have used the same tapes for several nights now. If there was much of a chance for imaging tonight, I would have changed them for fresh tapes. I suggest we switch to new tapes tomorrow. Imager, spectrographs and engineering camera all checked out okay. Arc & flat field lamps okay. PT: biases, dome flats done. Night log: ---------- We did not get on the sky. Rain nearby at sunset followed by inclement weather on site kept us closed until about 02:35, when we tried to open under a clearing sky. However, while filling the spectro dewars after opening, the dewpoint once again dropped below 3C, so we closed immediately. Minor dampness was detected on a few surfaces, but quickly evaporated inside the enclosure. We used the test version of IOP/SOP, v3_53_5. This is still the desired version, but has yet to be tested with the spectrograph and imager on the sky, so we have not declared it current. If it becomes necssary to revert to the current version, v3_50_4, then we will have to also revert to writing log files by hand. Note that the IOP servers must be restarted under the test version before each night's work. We were interviewed and filmed by a reporter from Channel 7 TV News in Albuquerque, in connection with the observations of the Gunn-Peterson effect in the z=6.28 quasar spectrum in particular, and the SDSS in general. We worked on getting a good set-up on the 'cinerama' 4-monitor observers' workstation (a.k.a. landru) to good effect. Landru will certainly make the driver's job easier when we do, eventually, get on the sky. Eric made progress with installation of the SDSS software products on landru, as we eventually hope to run at least watcher, astrotools and astrom on that machine. We had one unexpected logout of the observer's session on landru, which we think we traced to an 'autologout' event in the parent shell - users should put "unset autologout" in their .cshrc files. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2485 100 O bias -28.44 -26.01 30 doghouse 2486 100 O bias 24.51 29.48 46 doghouse ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 10523, plate -9999 ------- 20:01 10523 0.0 bias {{}} ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL None sent - endNight email declaring a tape to ship was sent in error. ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 18:42 64 45 9 268 (W) 415 - Partly cloudy 19:01 63 46 9 231 (SW) 430 - Partly cloudy 20:01 60 46 9 149 (SSE) 374 - Sprinkles 20:51 52 49 7 87 (E) 611 - Rain & lightning 22:11 55 46 6 91 (E) 499 - " 22:43 55 47 1 112 (ESE) 547 - " 23:16 55 47 11 155 (SSE) 771 - " 23:48 56 47 22 125 (SE) 614 - Intermittent rain 00:20 57 46 16 142 (SE) 711 - " 00:52 57 48 11 178 (S) 1075 - " 01:24 58 48 10 146 (SE) 1008 - " 01:57 56 47 12 110 (ESE) 694 - Partly cloudy 02:29 54 46 9 87 (E) 432 - Clearing 03:01 52 46 12 83 (E) 372 - Partly cloudy 03:53 53 47 11 82 (E) 747 - " 04:30 54 47 3 209 (SSW) 897 - Overcast 05:02 51 49 6 261 (W) 616 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Stowed in standard configuration.
