APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday August 29, 2002 (MJD 52516) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Stephanie Snedden, Pete Newman Support: Eric Neilsen (FNAL, by phone), Craig Loomis, Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Last night of shakedown after the summer shutdown. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spectrographs, imager and mirrors successfully tested on the sky. One plate (1054) almost finished and UCAC imaging done for the run under good (~1.2") seeing. Almost all shake items were tested. Despite opening about as many PRs as we closed, we think we are ready for science tomorrow night. There are a few things to watch out for, but otherwise, proceed as normal. 1) You can't fiducialize on the azimuth 121 degree fiducial. It is not being read. Any other fiducial will do. The altitude 75 degree fiducial is also not being read. French will look at it tomorrow. 2) The script for copying sky camera images from hoggpt to sdssmth is different. Be sure to follow the instructions from the APO PT web page. 3) The web page display of the new sky camera images is at http://hoggpt.apo.nmsu.edu/irsc/tonight/ These are raw, linearly stretched images and don't show cirrus well at all. See the shakedown summary for more detail. 4) Through the dark run, Connie would like you to run make_photo_bias_mosaic. See the shakedown summary for details. 5) We should continue to test watcher v2_19_0 for more nights before declaring it current. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Pete spent a hour getting his "X" terminal window manager working following the sdss-commish upgrade. Craig's efforts in overcoming the "improvements" (ha!) in the latest version of Linux were much appreciated. Whoever said Linux was "free" has a funny concept of "free". During pre-flight set up, tcc25m.apo.nmsu.edu rebooted itself for no apparent reason. Craig will look into its log files tomorrow and work on getting the spare tcc machine closer to ready. PR 4181 opened. The altitude axis aborted at ~19deg going up after opening. The root-cause display showed nothing unexpected. We thumped the 6 o'clock flat-field petal for good measure and the axis did not abort again worked. Did the 6 o'clock petal get adjusted after the similar problem a week ago? During test slews after opening, we first saw the 45, 60 and 75 deg altitude fiducials not read on the first pass. The 45 and 60deg points worked on subseuqnet slews, but the 75 deg point failed to read in ~10 attempts. PR 4182 opened, and French is aware of the problem. We found that several of the temperature sensors on M1 and M2 (at least) are nailed to a low value. PR 4183 opened. While investigating that, we discovered the same channel was displayed in two different places on the display. PR 4184 opened against TPM. PR 3825 - software version numbers in logTool: closed. PR 3895 - seeingRun control of focus loop: closed. PR 3847 - logTool calls logViwer with wrong params: open - we think the test instructions are incomplete. Once we opened, we proceeded with on-sky instrument tests, starting with the spectrographs . Initial out-of-focus images showed the donuts to be reasonably symmetric in the guide camera. The guider efficiency meter was reading ~150%, although we were using the default instrument block and hence guide camera gain settings. PR 4186 opened. Otherwise, the guider worked flawlessly, still with the Paralan fiber-optics driver from the engineering camera installed in the spectro guider box. We mounted plate 1054, cartridge 6. FK5 star needed to get offsets. We were paying too much attention to testing to notice that if we had taken a smear, we'd have finished this plate! All spectro parameters were within specifications. The new sos.apo.nmsu.edu machine is very nicely finishing science reductions in about 2m30s of CPU time, around half the time the old one took. This is just the improvement we've been looking for! We then mounted the imager to check mirror collimation and astigmatic correction. Run 3311 - on telescope bias. All normal, except watcher reported aline biasL and biasR errors for CCD 56. biasL was around 1071, biasR was around 1069, but the watcher plots do not show nominal values, so we don't know how far out of tolerance these values are. We made another bias mosaic for Connie. This one is from a bias with Tbars unlatched. It is called idMosaic-003311-0020.fit and is in /data/photo/cmr. We ran another short bias (run 3312) and got the same errors for CCD56. PR4185 opened. Run 3313 - Strip 82S. Focus and collimation checked ok, so we ran on to get UCAC coverage for the dark run. Around lambda 138, while still not in focus, we ran across a nice globular cluster (frames ~21-24). Moon was up by this time, but the run should be good for UCAC coverage. Around frame 79 in dewar 4, we saw a nice pair of interacting galaxies. (But this was tourism, not science!). After the UCAC scan, we checked collimation. The donuts showed the usual mild astigmatism. Possibly there was a slight hint of coma, with the upper right quadrant of the donuts (as viewed on the monitors) being *slightly* brighter. It is not nearly bad enough to affect survey operations, as our subarcsec seeing and scatter across the chip rows will attest to. We made no adjustments to collimation. Out of focus donuts are saved in /data/photo/optics/52516 on sdsshost. Big apologies to Eric for waking him about the MOP PRs that we should NOT have been testing but that were still listed in the shakedown plan - our confusion! As a result of the work he did, we were able to close MOP PRs 3623 (murmur filter and dfm commands) and 1702 (logGUI to show version number) while PR 3778 (camera monitor for the PT) was sent back for more work. Run 3314 - 3315. Towards the end of the night (starting about 10:40Z) we ran a test of JEG's twilight flat-fieldd scan with the imager. We say "test" because the sky was not cloud-free, and there was also considerable gradient in sky brightness from the Moon. We started with an on-telescope bias, run 3314, also suspect from Moonlight brightness. We found it difficult to use the IOP gScale command to track the changes in sky level - we really need a command that allows us to set grey levels against absolute data numbers instead of relative to the DA's estimate of the sky level. We were able to run until ~30 minutes before sunrise when the counts in the g chips exceeded 20,000. endNight is running as this log is mailed. Day shift: please check emails from JEG as to whether or not tapes are to be shipped. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3311 05:14Z 05:30Z 100 O 126.02 129.96 40 bias On telescope 3312 05:34Z 05:41Z 100 O 131.04 132.86 26 bias On telescope 3313 05:50Z 07:33Z 82 S 135.78 161.68 176 engineering, should be calibration 3314 10:38Z 10:53Z 100 O -152.67 -149.11 38 bias On telescope 3315 10:59Z 12:03Z 82 S -147.53 -131.56 116 calibration, twilight flats ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3313 - Strip 82S - UCAC coverage Frame lambda Comments ----- ------ ------------------------------- 35 140 In focus, skippy happy, some cloud, moon rising 106 150 End of UCAC coverage.
