APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday November 10, 2002 (MJD 52589) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Marginal seeing & some clouds early meant spectroscopy. Three plates declared done and good data on two more. Some problems here and there with ice. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout was Ok, except that Jurek noticed water had leaked into the lower enclosure through the platform near the imager rack (SW corner). A PR was reopened about this. Very icy tonight. The padlock to the cartridge bay was frozen, as was the lock to the PT door. The IR camera cover was also frozen to its base. Heat of friction & heat guns were applied to the problems. The IR camera cover came unstuck suddenly, and we hit one of the tripod legs. The camera base came loose from the leg and we saw that the end of the leg was actually below the set screw. We put it back in place, but the set screw is still not in contact with the leg. All of the above ice problems plus clouds & high humidity kept us closed until 01:55Z. On the plus side, without the melting & refreezing that gave us the ice, we probably wouldn't be able to open because of blowing snow. We started with cartridge 6, plate 675. Stars on slew. Seeing not so good. Three good exposures, but we couldn't quite declare it done. One more good exposure should finish it. We had a delay during the cartridge change. There was ice on the manipulator arm's track, and ice on the manipulator handles. We removed the ice on the track with a snow shovel. The ice on the handles kept the brake from coming on, so we could not slide the manipulator forward or back. With the heat gun, we got the ice off the handle, heard the brake click on, and we were back in business. 04:11Z Cartridge 3 plate 1120. Stars on slew. Finished in three long exposures. 05:57Z Cartridge 2, plate 1066. Stars on slew. We saw that the arcs indicated the collimation was off. It appears that collimation got progressively worse through the night. We recollimated. Plate 1066 was declared done after three good exposures. It became photometric while we were doing this plate, but seeing didn't warrant a switch to imaging, so... 08:33Z Cartridge 1, plate 806. Stars on slew. A high S/N plate, so not yet done, but good signal acquired. Had cartridge latch problems when removing it. See the problems section. 09:59Z Cartridge 5, plate 893: Needed an FK5 to find the field. Cartridge 1 latches: -------------------- When removing cartridge 1 from the telescope, one of the three latches did not disengage. After three tries at different forces (progressively higher), they finally all disengaged. It looks like the mounts may need to be adjusted on cartridge 1. A PR was filed. IR Camera Tripod: ----------------- The south tripod leg is loose at the top (near the camera plate) after it got bumped during the freeing of the ice-stuck cover. We put the leg back in the socket, but saw that the top of the leg is below the set screw. It needs to be tightened back down. A PR was filed.
