APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday January 23, 2003 (MJD 52663) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Dan Long, Pete Newman Support: French Leger (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science, with possible testing of the fix to the IOP instrument servers PR. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- One plate done (889), good data on one more, but problems with the shutter position sensor on sp1, then clouds, prevented anything else. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: Spectrograph focus was checked. The collimate command reported the sp1 blue camera focus error as 0.2+-0.32, above the tolerance of 0.15 but consistent with zero. SoS reported a test flat and arc as good, so no change was made. We tested a possible fix for the spectro server with IOP v3_104_0 but that was not quite a fix, so we are continuing with IOP v3_103_0, with the knowledge that the spectro server must be stopped and restarted by hand _after_ the master server has completely started. Details were sent to Eric for further work. Night shift: Lots of patchy cirrus at sunset, so we start with spectroscopy. Observing sequence: (N.B. Guide stars seen after gotoField unless noted. 01:00Z Plate 1130, cartridge 1. Nothing observed, see problem section #1. 04:26Z Plate 889, cartridge 2. Done in three exposures. Excellent seeing but continued clouds. 05:54Z Plate 1189, cartridge 5. Two good exposures (but see also problem section #1.1) then closed by clouds about 07:10Z. At 10:00Z we gave up. Current conditions were complete overcast backlit by the moon, and the satellite images showed the prospects were for it to get worse. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3601 21:00Z 21:26Z 100 O 147.08 153.63 58 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 18272, plate -9999 ------- 20:43 18272 0.0 bias ----- sequence 18273, plate 1162 ------- 21:52 18273 0.0 bias 22:07 18274 2.1 arc 22:09 18275 2.1 arc 22:34 18276 10.0 flat 22:36 18277 2.0 arc 22:43 18278 2.1 arc 22:45 18279 2.1 arc ----- sequence 18280, plate -9999 ------- 23:36 18280 0.0 bias ----- sequence 18281, plate 1130 ------- 01:30 18281 10.0 flat ----- sequence 18282, plate -9999 ------- 01:43 18282 0.0 bias ----- sequence 18283, plate 811 ------- 03:12 18283 10.0 flat 03:15 18284 2.0 arc 03:19 18285 0.0 bias 03:22 18286 0.0 bias ----- sequence 18287, plate 889 ------- 17.9 21.8 24.4 18.9 DONE 03:56 18287 0.0 bias 03:59 18288 0.0 bias 04:01 18289 0.0 bias 04:04 18290 0.0 bias 04:06 18291 0.0 bias 04:09 18292 0.0 bias 04:11 18293 0.0 bias 04:13 18294 0.0 bias 04:15 18295 0.0 bias 04:27 18296 10.0 flat 04:30 18297 2.0 arc 04:54 18298 1200.1 target 05:13 18299 1000.1 target 05:31 18300 900.1 target 05:39 18301 240.0 smear ----- sequence 18302, plate 1189 ------- 8.5 9.3 8.9 8.0 Not done 05:53 18302 10.0 flat 06:03 18303 0.0 bias 06:05 18304 0.0 bias 06:09 18305 10.0 flat 06:33 18306 2.0 arc 06:52 18307 900.1 target 07:15 18308 1200.1 target 07:38 18309 1200.1 target useless ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:45Z 2 889 90.22 0.0020 65.96 0.0017 255.46 0.0041 1.000200 05:51Z 5 1189 50.29 0.0028 53.05 0.0007 220.52 -0.0136 1.000270 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5918 Stays: JL5919 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:45Z 2 889 1.00020 -1974 -661 -165 90 65.9 5.5 0 44 BG38 1.1 05:51Z 5 1189 1.00027 -2665 -1200 -165 50 53.0 6.2 2 159 BG38 1.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:15Z 41 15 2 316 (NW) 155 - Variable cloud 20:48Z 40 15 5 270 (W) 158 - " 21:20Z 41 17 1 251 (WSW) 185 - " 21:52Z 39 15 7 356 (NNW) 159 - " 22:24Z 40 17 4 14 (NNE) 241 - " 22:56Z 40 18 8 30 (NNE) 316 - " 23:28Z 41 18 5 59 (ENE) 295 - " 00:01Z 42 14 8 68 (ENE) 187 - " 00:33Z 41 13 3 48 (NE) 81 - " 01:05Z 41 12 11 59 (ENE) 73 - " 01:36Z 43 12 17 56 (NE) 70 - " 02:08Z 43 11 11 58 (ENE) 52 - " 02:40Z 43 11 1 95 (E) 67 - " 03:12Z 43 10 7 70 (ENE) 40 - " 03:42Z 43 10 10 80 (E) 40 - " 04:14Z 43 8 7 85 (E) 16 - " 04:44Z 41 8 0 44 (NE) 26 - " 05:14Z 43 8 0 161 (SSE) 24 - " 05:45Z 42 10 3 123 (ESE) 48 - " 06:15Z 42 11 3 184 (S) 48 - " 06:45Z 42 11 2 187 (S) 49 - " 07:16Z 40 9 2 185 (S) 57 - Overcast 07:48Z 41 11 1 199 (SSW) 130 - " 08:20Z 42 12 1 187 (S) 82 - " 08:52Z 41 12 1 205 (SSW) 99 - " 09:24Z 41 10 2 182 (S) 91 - " 09:56Z 41 9 5 252 (WSW) 73 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:13Z Doors open, fans on 00:35Z Enclosure off 08:00Z Enclosure on (but fans still on) 10:05Z Fans off Status at 10:09Z: Telescope stowed at: 30 deg Instrument mounted: Cartridge 5 Counterweights at: 110 Autofill systems: On 180L LN2 dewar weights: Spectro 151 lb Imager 82 lb ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_103_0 Watcher: v2_20_0 MCP: v5_17_0 TPM: tpm_v2_24_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.6.8 November 13 2002 sdssProcedures: v1_62 SoS: v4_9_13 hoggPT: v1_5_8 plate-mapper: V2_10 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0810 0.0790 Axial B 0.7970 0.7970 Axial C 0.8160 0.8240 Trans D -9.0860 -9.1130 Lateral E 1.8560 1.8870 Lateral F 0.0000 1.4300 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650. By digging into the murmur log, we found that this was down to the sp1 shutters being in an indeterminate state. A 'mechSend s' command showed that both the Shutter_open_sensor and Stutter_closed_sensor fields were Off. French (who was on site) determined that the closed sensor on the shutter actuator air cylinder had worked loose and moved, but that the shutter was otherwise working normally. He fixed it. We lost some further time getting the spectrograph mechanicals back into a good state (the exposure remaining timer was negative and running) and taking enough bias frames to clear the chips. The conclusion is that this failure was probably triggered by the recent work on the taped-out LEDs on the sensors, but it really a symptom of the underlying inadaquacies of the sensor assembly. French plans on finding a more robust solution in the morning. However, the solution will require dismantling the shutter actuator, which in turn means removing the sp1 blue camera, requiring several hours and more than one engineer. We are certain this was the same problem that bit us once last night. Problem 1.1 - as above ---------------------- The problem recurred on later plates, but we found that by exercising the shutter with 'mechSend os' and 'mechSend cs' commands we were able to get the shutter sensor to work again for a while. We decided that operating the spectrograph in this degraded state with slightly reduced efficiency tonight was better than waking French and having HIM work in a degraded state with highly reduced efficiency tomorrow, when he will have the time to implement a more robust solution. ---=== SPECTROGRAPH COLLIMATION CHECK ===--- As part of dayshift, I collected the focus numbers.
