APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday March 10, 2003 (MJD 52709) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Pete Newman Steph Snedden Support: Larry Carey (UW) Visitors: Lor Gehret & students (Latin School of Chicago) Scotsuko Nitta Kleinman, borrowing the 3.5-m ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Four plates declared done, plus imaging on strip 29N in excellent seeing. Two critical-high PRs. One on counterweights, one on imager photo shutters. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: Problems with id3 - after rebooting DAs, everything went back to normal. See the problems section for details. Since then: DAs -ok, spectro guider ok, MIGs - ok. Spectrographs in foucs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night: ------- 01:51Z Cartridge 1, plate 1266. Stars on slew. Seeing was subarcsec. Smear done. Declared done with a total exposure time of 3000 s. 02:49Z We started a long bias on the telescope to see if we trigger any gang transfer problems - before we start imaging for real. After 251 frames, there were no problems, so the drift was ended. Pete tried instChange from a different SOP session than his operations session. There was still a time-out (see the problems section). Smear done. Plate declared done with a total exposure time of 2400 s. 03:34Z Cartridge 2, plate 941. Stars on slew. Smear done. Plate completed after 2400 s exposure. 04:57Z Cartridge 3, plate 1216. Stars on slew. SOP indicated a large scale change after finding the field. Instead of applying the scale change, another gotoField -gflat was issued. After that, the guide stars indicated no scale change was needed. Had a warning about bad sky residuals in SoS. Smear done. Plate declared done with a total exposure time of 2190 s. 06:09Z Cartridge 4, plate 1218. Problems finding guide stars with a regular startMon. We needed a startMon -simple. The reason was guide star 6 was too close to the edge of the display. However, we did not see this error message in SOP until "showGuiderFrame" was issued. Previously, the "star too close to the edge..." message showed up right away. The symptoms were that the guider flat displayed normally, but the next gcam of the guide stars did not display, although the exposure completed normally. Smear done. Declared this plate done with a total exposure of 2190 s. 07:15Z Cartridge 5, plate 1015. Stars on slew. Took one exposure of 720 s, and a smear. Not done. We then went down to switch to the imager. Counterweight 1 failed as we were moving to the lower limit, followed by a failure of the counterweight controller box. See the problems section. With Larry's much appreciated help, we manually moved the counterweights. 09:29Z We begin imaging. Strip 29 N, Run 3716: startLambda -6. Focus loop converged at frame 18. 09:35Z Start of ramp, lambda=-3, frame 22. 09:43Z Start of science, lambda=-1, frame 35. 11:51Z End of science, lambda= 11:59Z End of drift, lambda= , frame 263. 12:01Z Donuts for Jim, run 3717 ...SHUTTERS DID NOT OPEN! We ended the drift and issued a regular goDrift 12:08Z Second attempt at donuts, run 3718. Shutters still closed. We start troubleshooting. See problem section. Run 3719, shutters open after a minute or two. Twilight. No donuts, Jim. Sorry. Run 3720 Bias on imager. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame After issuing an endDrift for run 3714, the following id2 and id3 errors showed up: (note that the previous run 3713 was the one on which problems with id2 and id3 occured and when we decided to reset crates, so everything below happened after resetting crates): id2's archiver and tape drives dsc E archStsFail Failed to receive exabyte command completion status (dsc_E_archStsFail Failed to receive exabyte command completion status : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z ) dsc E archWrFail Tape write error while archiving frame 3713 9.42 (dsc_E_archWrFail Tape write error while archiving frame 3713 9.42 : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z ) dsc E archShutDown1 Archiver shutting down first drive (dsc_E_archShutDown1 Archiver shutting down first drive : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z) dsc E trcErr dscArch CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x8001421c, drive 1 (dsc_E_trcErr dscArch_CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x8001421c, drive 1 : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z ) dsc E trcErr dscArch CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x8001421c, drive 2 (dsc_E_trcErr dscArch_CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x8001421c, drive 2 : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z ) dsc E archShutDown2 Archiver shutting down second drive (dsc_E_archShutDown2 Archiver shutting down second drive : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z) id3's archiver and tape drives dsc E archShutDown1 Archiver shutting down first drive (dsc_E_archShutDown1 Archiver shutting down first drive : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z) dsc E archWrFail Tape write error while archiving frame 3713 9.43 (dsc_E_archWrFail Tape write error while archiving dsc E archShutDown2 Archiver shutting down second drive (dsc_E_archShutDown2 Archiver shutting down second drive : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z) dsc E archStsFail Failed to receive exabyte command completion status (dsc_E_archStsFail Failed to receive exabyte command completion status : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z ) dsc E trcErr dscArch CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x8001421c, drive 1 (dsc_E_trcErr dscArch_CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x8001421c, drive 1 : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z ) dsc E trcErr dscArch CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x8001421c, drive 2 (dsc_E_trcErr dscArch_CheckPrevOp: rstatus = 0x8001421c, drive 2 : 2003-03-11 00:44:58Z ) Watcher Errors: --------------- MCP azimuth (correction for azimuth 198240 is too large (2003-03-11 01:36:29Z sdssmcp): 2003-03-11 01:36:51Z TPM dewar (MAJOR: 2003-03-11 01:35:16Z) tracking (MAJOR: 2003-03-11 01:24:05Z) m2 temp (MAJOR: 2003-03-11 02:19:25Z) dewar (MAJOR: 2003-03-11 05:24:57Z) tracking (MINOR: 2003-03-11 05:58:30Z) m2 temp (MAJOR: 2003-03-11 05:06:44Z) m2 temp (MAJOR: 2003-03-11 06:54:57Z) SOP instChange: --------------- sp1> instChange I think that we haven't started slewing To kill this message, type 'schedule watchTCCSlew {} 0' I think we got there before I knew we started I don't think the slew ever started (after 30s) sp1> Is that last message from watchTCCSlew or tccPutAndWait? The slew finished about when the "got there before we started" message, then the last message came about 30 seconds later. The slew itself was quite normal. Issued at the command line in a +different+ SOP session to that from which I run SOPGUI Counterweight Failure: ---------------------- Counterweight 1 stopped while moving down from 280. We tried moving it a few more times, remotely and at the control box. It would move about an inch, then stop, and then we were unable to get it to move at all. At the control box, in manual mode, we could hear what sounded like relays clicking, but there was no counterweight motion. We then tried moving other counterweights (which had moved before counterweight 1 failed) and they would no longer move. We are afraid something has failed in the control box. We tried replacing the external fuse, even though it looked okay, but it made no difference. We also smelled an odor of something overheating in the lower enclosure that is probably related, although we couldn't verify that it came from the control box. At this point, we called Jon B. Of the different options discussed, we opted to manually move the counterweights. We dragged Larry from bed so he could supervise. We used both an electric drill and a manual crank to move them to 22.5 inches from the bottom of the window to the bottom of the counterweight. This is equivalent to a counterweight setting of 710, near the upper limit, and a good enough balance for the imager. The details of how to use the electric drill to move the counterweight have been folklored (telescope/enclosure section). Imager Shutters: ---------------- The photo shutters failed to open when we started the donuts drift (run 3717. The astrometric shutters behaved themselves. im> cc imstat PHOTOMETRIC_TOP_SHUTTERS NOT_OPEN # !!!_FAULT_!!! PHOTOMETRIC_BOTTOM_SHUTTERS NOT_OPEN # !!!_FAULT_!!! ASTROMETRIC_TOP_SHUTTERS OPEN ASTROMETRIC_BOTTOM_SHUTTERS OPEN TBARS UNLATCHED "cc close all" cleared the fault. The third time we issued a "cc open all" the shutters opened AFTER one or two minutes, the shutter status was OPEN and we saw stars. The shutter pressure gauge in the lower enclosure was normal at 80 psi, but we did hear a hiss from the imager. We are not sure if that was the normal purge line hiss, or the sound of a leak. A PR was filed.
