APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday May 4, 2003 (MJD 52764) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Steph Snedden, Jurek Krzesinski and Brewe Howington at the end of the nigh :) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- First half of the night lost due to clouds. In the second one we finished 4 plates: cart plate: 1 1334 4 1321 7 1056 8 1326 One minor problem while setting up on plate 1056 (cart 7) - see the log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift notes ----------------- During the preflight imager doghouse bias it seemed to me that the bias level displayed for chip 22 looked unusually "flat" on the right-hand side. I checked one of the frames (run 3913, frame 14, but all frames look about the same) and indeed, the pixel-to-pixel variance seems to be about 2 on the right, and about 6 on the left. Is that expected? Night ----- Spectrograph focus check: ok. Details at end of problems section. 02:16Z We opened, hoping that clouds will go away, and mounted cart 2 plt 1277 Stars probably on slew (but because of twilight we guesed it by position of fk5 star). After 30 minut exposure we didn't make the first one, trying another one. The cart expired, waiting for clouds to move out. 06:29Z Cart 4, plt 1321 mounted, stars on slew. Done with 3 exposures. 07:34Z Cart 8, plt 1326 mounted, stars on slew. Done with 3 exposures. 08:41Z It's photometric, seeing marginal - at this time we decided to stick with photometry. 08:41Z Cart 1, plt 1334 mounted, stars on slew. Done with 3 exposures. 09:46Z Cart 7, plt 1056 mounted, stars on slew. Alt 72 deg. The guider sees only a few stars, watcher shows: rotator (addoffset: Max accl. for rotator exceeded: -319/1000 (2003-05-05 09:46:09Z sdssmcp): 2003-05-05 09:46:11Z ), we just moved the telescope to the field again, and no stars on the slew. So, we moved the telescope the way it should cross a fiducial on rotator and find out that all 3 axies fiducials were properly corrected. Then we went back to field and used fk5 star to find the field. And that solved the problem. Done with 3 exposure. endNight: finished ok. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3931 23:10Z 23:57Z 100 O -80.91 -69.08 87 ignore doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 20783, plate -9999 ------- 23:07 20783 0.0 bias ----- sequence 20784, plate 1317 ------- 00:30 20784 10.0 flat 00:33 20785 2.0 arc 00:38 20786 2.1 arc 00:41 20787 2.1 arc ----- sequence 20788, plate 1277 ------- 02:59 20788 10.0 flat 03:01 20789 2.0 arc 03:39 20790 1800.1 target bad -low S/N 04:08 20791 1500.1 target bad -low S/N 04:36 20792 1500.1 target bad -low S/N ----- sequence 20793, plate 1321 ------- 06:32 20793 10.0 flat 06:35 20794 2.0 arc 06:54 20795 900.1 target 07:07 20796 600.1 target 07:20 20797 600.1 target 07:27 20798 240.0 smear ----- sequence 20799, plate 1326 ------- 07:42 20799 10.0 flat 07:45 20800 2.0 arc 07:59 20801 600.1 target 08:12 20802 600.1 target 08:25 20803 600.1 target 08:33 20804 240.0 smear ----- sequence 20805, plate 1334 ------- 08:48 20805 10.0 flat 08:50 20806 2.0 arc 09:05 20807 600.1 target 09:18 20808 600.1 target 09:31 20809 600.1 target 09:39 20810 240.0 smear ----- sequence 20811, plate 1056 ------- 10:04 20811 10.0 flat 10:07 20812 2.0 arc 10:26 20813 900.1 target 10:39 20814 600.1 target 10:52 20815 600.1 target 11:00 20816 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:08Z 2 1277 240.25 0.0007 76.10 -0.0003 69.29 0.0118 1.000090 06:41Z 4 1321 197.69 0.0008 65.05 0.0002 27.12 -0.0046 0.999990 07:57Z 8 1326 208.82 0.0013 65.03 0.0010 42.62 -0.0078 1.000010 09:02Z 1 1334 223.52 -0.0007 74.96 0.0015 52.15 -0.0115 1.000060 10:13Z 7 1056 252.20 0.0023 67.69 -0.0004 87.59 -0.0111 0.999940 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6384 Stays: JL6385 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:08Z 2 1277 1.00007 -690 475 -75 240 76.1 7.5 18 265 gdr 2.0 06:41Z 4 1321 0.99999 99 1122 -100 198 65.1 6.2 16 271 -/- 1.8 07:57Z 8 1326 1.00001 -99 959 -100 209 65.0 5.3 18 267 -/- 1.8 09:02Z 1 1334 1.00006 -591 483 -150 223 75.0 4.9 17 270 - 1.8 10:13Z 7 1056 0.99994 591 1526 -100 252 67.7 4.0 20 268 - 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:45Z 53 10 29 264 (W) 1693 - 23:18Z 52 9 39 254 (WSW) 1147 - 23:50Z 51 11 22 264 (W) 1427 - 00:52Z 48 13 27 247 (WSW) 1515 - 01:24Z 47 15 15 283 (WNW) 1907 - 01:55Z 46 16 15 260 (W) 1564 - 02:26Z 45 16 16 232 (SW) 1493 - 02:56Z 45 15 10 252 (WSW) 967 - 03:27Z 45 15 16 266 (W) 825 - 04:00Z 45 12 20 267 (W) 711 - 04:32Z 45 11 20 267 (W) 730 - 05:04Z 45 11 20 251 (WSW) 703 - 05:37Z 44 11 21 268 (W) 772 - 06:09Z 43 12 20 267 (W) 656 - 06:40Z 43 13 21 276 (W) 774 - 07:13Z 42 15 12 276 (W) 949 - 07:45Z 42 15 18 275 (W) 838 - 08:18Z 41 15 17 281 (W) 870 - 08:50Z 41 15 20 277 (W) 801 - 09:23Z 40 13 24 276 (W) 786 - 09:54Z 39 14 17 280 (W) 804 - 10:27Z 39 15 16 268 (W) 803 - 10:59Z 38 16 18 279 (W) 972 - 11:32Z 38 17 26 276 (W) 854 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:15Z Telescope opened, dewars refilled. 11:15Z Telescope closed, imager dewar replaced, hoses hooked up, cart 2 mounted. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_113_1 Watcher: v2_22_0 MCP: v5_18_0 TPM: tpm_v2_28_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: 2.6.8, November 13, 2002 sdssProcedures: v1_68 SoS: v4_9_13 hoggPT: v1_6_8 plate-mapper: v4_2_0 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0970 0.0790 Axial B 0.7940 0.7970 Axial C 0.8200 0.8240 Trans D -9.0550 -9.1130 Lateral E 1.8350 1.8870 Lateral F 0.0000 1.4300 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650.
