APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday June 25, 2003 (MJD 52816) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Steph Snedden Night: Howard Brewington Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- On run #4014 at beginning of night, we had problems with focus loop, and we also were unable to get seeingRun to work either. Then Watcher report, "No gangs transfered." This turned out to be a teamster problem; see log. Imaging most of the night. Strips covered: 25 N startLambda 22, endLambda 64 (2 deg ramp on each end) 44 S startLambda 10, endLambda 36 (2 deg ramp on each end) Switched to Spectro because of clouds. Cart 09, Plate 1035 was declared done. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ------------ No problems during afternoon setup except for a tourist-pushed rail stop button. Gave the blue camera on spectrograph 1 a minor focus tweak. Details after the problems section. Also, see DIMM notes in problems section. ___________________________________________ Night: Imaging (see imaging details): At the beginning on run #4014, we had a problem when starting the focus loop. startFocusLoop command complained about focus-*.par parameter file wrong permissions. We wondered if this was an umask problem? Next, we could not get seeingRun to work either (same permission problem). Then, but much later that one might expect, watcher reported, "No gangs transfered." We recognized this as a teamster problem. The teamster was restored finaly (after several trials and 30 or 40 minutes) (now to restart teamster you need to issue: teamseter 60 imager -force). Waiting for teamster to wake up and do it's job, we were pondering a possibility of a problem with ptvme, but we knew, that sometimes it takes a long time for teamster to start transfering the gangs, so we decided NOT to stop the drift, hoping that the pointing is as good as on previous nights, and we also knew that seeing tonight is very good. We waited and watched the murmur log for gang transfers. Finally, gang transfers were reported in the murmur log, skippy was run on first 20 frames and reported that pointing was good. Then the rest of the run went properly. Run #4015 08:26Z Frame 145, lambda 28, the sky is being reported as nonphotometric; however, the clouds causing this difficulty are around 30 degrees and not in the field of the telesope. 09:06Z Frame 210, lambda 38, after this frame we cannot guarantee the clouds will not be in the scope's field of view. So, we are switching to spectro. Because we wanted to finish plate 1035, we did not do donuts. +++++++++++++++ Spectro 09:21Z Cart 09, Plate 1035, stars on slew, seeing ~2.0" With signal from previous night, this plate was declared done after two exposures. endNight finished and was happy ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4012 22:55Z 23:11Z 100 O -33.44 -29.34 41 ignore 4013 03:16Z 03:31Z 100 O 32.00 35.82 39 bias 4014 03:33Z 06:59Z 25 N 15.21 9.67 355 science 4015 07:03Z 09:07Z 44 S 7.59 38.69 221 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 4013: Bias, T-bars unlatched, on telescope, done outside of enclosure, started 45 minutes before 18 degree twilight. It stopped turning in the middle of a slew. Pressing the handpaddle N/S buttons did nothing...no turning of the motor. When I twiddled the slow motion declination knob, that freed it and the motor worked again. I think the gear is binding. Jon was notified. Later, the gear appeared to bind again, so we stopped the seeing measurements. _______________________________________________________________________
