Good data for another 2 plates (1468, 1359). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: -------------------- Trans D of M2 was reading zero again today in the mirror stats; Jon Brinkmann reset Mit. guage. I (Howard) homed m2, and rebooted the migs. So, there are two sets on mirror values in logTool, i.e., before and after the fix. And, I issused the command: "saveNominalMigValuesForLog" to reset nominal values. Night: -------------------- Partly cloudy at sunset. Opening was delayed slightly by the spectro collimation check. We began with spectroscopy. Plate 1491 (cartridge 2): FK5 needed to acquire the field. When combined with data from a previous night (52995), this plate was finished in a single 1200 s exposure. Although photometric, the seeing is poor ( > 2"). We did not switch to Apache Wheel imaging because the only spoke available at this time would have passed by before we were able to get on it. Thus, we stayed with spectroscopy. Plate 1468 (cartridge 3): FK5 needed for this field. We were able to obtain four 1800 s exposures on this plate before it expired but due to poor seeing, this was not enough to finish it. Plate 1632 (cartridge 4): FK5 needed for this field. Shortly after beginning the first science exposure, we noticed that the preCal arc showed that the spectrographs had gone out of collimation. We aborted the exposure and recollimated the spectrographs. It's very odd that the spectrographs went out of collimation though. The collimation was checked and adjusted this afternoon when the air temp was about -3.1 C. When redoing the collimation now, the air temp was -3.4 C. True, the spectrographs were probably somewhat warmer than the air temp this afternoon but even taking this into consideration, it seems unlikely that this need for recollimation was due to a temperature change. See the Problems section for details of both collimations. When combined with previous data (52995), this plate was finished in three 1200 s exposures. After integrating on this field for an hour, we thought we might need a postCal and so we took one without waiting for SoS to request it. However, there was a problem in that the postCal took longer than normal to complete: 06:47:53 49686 SOPGUI: postCalibs 1 1 06:58:33 49686 SOPGUI: instChange -noInit We are guessing that one of the arc lamps took longer than normal to come on due to the cold temperature (or perhaps 1 of the lamps is getting flaky) but this is only a guess. Due to the fact that at least some of the arc lamps were on longer than normal, SoS showed that NLAMPS was bad for this arc (24145) and so it was declared bad. Fortunately, the postCal was not needed after all. It was still photometric after we completed this plate. We would have switched to Apache Wheel imaging at this point but, due to the unplanned extra time we spent on this plate (collimation), the last available spoke would have passed before we were able to get to it. So, we stayed with spectroscopy. Plate 1275 (cartridge 6): Guide stars on the gotoField. The preCal took the normal amount of time (around 6 minutes) so the problem with the previous postCal did not persist. This plate was finished in four 900 s exposures. Plate 1427 (cartridge 8): Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (4200 s total). Plate 1306 (cartridge 9): Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in three 900 s exposures. Plate 1435 (cartridge 1): FK5 needed for this field. When combined with data from a previous night (52994), this plate was done in 2 exposures (1500 s total). Plate 1359 (cartridge 7): FK5 needed for this field.
