APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 29, 2003 (MJD 53003) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Dan Long Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Moon and high clouds made it a spectroscopy night. We finished 5 plates (4 1506, 3 1566, 5 1149, 6 1432, 8 1439) Mistracking due to a MOTH!!! Yep, we ran over a moth with the azimuth encoder tonight. These things survive (almost) anything. It was in the single digits Farenheit the last couple of days. Imager U3 chip worked in bias drift taken around midnight when air temperature had risen above freezing. sp2 suddenly required refocusing under puzzling circumstances (no temperature change, same general pointing as previous plate, sp1 was still in spec). It also took a long time to get back in focus because the spatial and dispersion ranges also shifted. The next plate's preCals were also out of spec on sp2. It sure looks like something is moving around on sp2 or the latching mechanism for its slithead. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: -------------------- While doing an imager bias, I noticed that U3 was still unhappy. And, ID4-2 had a problem when I did a initNight -tapeRelabel. I cleaned that drive, replaced the tape, and did another bias. This time, the ID4-2 problem was gone. spectro focus checked ok in afternoon. Jon Brinkmann consulted by phone in afternoon regarding air off message from sp1. A leaky air pressure sensor is disconnected at the moment and is the reason the error is being thrown. Night: -------------------- 23:30Z Doors Open, Fans On. 00:15Z Enclosure Open. Best focus has gone from 300 to 100 in a little over an hour. This is a little odd since the temperature has only changed 2C and the optics have been in equilibrium the whole time. 03:08Z Done in 4 exposures. Needs postCalibs. 03:13Z instChange Cartridge 3 1566 lowz74 23.8 36.5 24.7 35.9 03:18Z gotoField Guide stars on slew. 03:33Z preCalib 03:40Z scaleChange tweak of .004 was mistakenly keyed in as .04, which SOPGUI dutifully implemented in 4 .01 moves. This takes a while and of course had to be undone, so 8 .01 moves later we are back to where we started. 03:45Z First science 24395 05:10Z Lost guide stars at the very end of exposure 24398. sp1> ls -l *gimg007* -rw-rw-r-- 1 snedden dss 201600 Dec 30 05:08 gimg0077.fits -rw-rw-r-- 1 snedden dss 201600 Dec 30 05:09 gimg0078.fits -rw-rw-r-- 1 snedden dss 201600 Dec 30 05:10 gimg0079.fits Guide stars are streaks in 78 and gone by 80. All axes are moving and indicate tracking. Maybe, but clearly not sidereal. Slewed telescope so we crossed fiducials on all axes. Found 3300 count error on azimuth. Azimuth was around -34 at the time. I can't believe we just ran over a moth after the temperatures we've had the last few days. I can't believe it, but that's just what happened. There was a fresh moth squish right next to the encoder! It was in the single digits F last night!!! 05:40Z Plate is done as of the end of science exposure 24399. Taking postCals even though they are not requested (actually they ended up being requested by the last exposure). Jurek's SOP session still refused to update guider images, so a new session was started. 09:55Z preCalib sp2 refocus saga: ----------------- For reasons not at all obvious, the preCalib flat came back with red XSIGMA values for sp2. This is strange because on the previous plate the values were all black. The temperature has been stable all night. The telescope moved very little going to instrument change from the previous plate and went back to nearly the same spot on the sky. Also sp1 values are still perfectly good. What happened to sp2 to make it suddenly go out of focus? preCalib exposures 24416, 24417, 24419 declared bad. refocussing...... Collimate says BOTH sp1 and sp2 are out of focus. sp1 by .5 pixels ( 4500 piston) sp2 by .67 pixels (6100). Looking at SoS reductions one would have expected an enormous move in sp2 and little or none in sp1. The moves are both modest, and surprisingly similar. Can SoS really be happy with .5 pixels of focus error, but outraged at .67? XSIGMA and WSIGMA are ALL in the black according to SoS for the sp1 preCalib exposures 24416, 24417. Decided to go with collimate's recommendation and pistoned both spectrographs. After focusing, tried an arc and got good sigma values but WAVEMAX was red for both b2 and r2. However WAVEMIN was in spec. Increasing WAVEMIN about half the amount the WAVEMAX decreased in the refocusing, got both values in spec. Unfortunately now XMAX is out of spec for r2. Adjusted spatially and got rid of red values (still yellow). Moving on to science as this has consumed an hour and a half of the night already. I don't recall ever having so much trouble getting the spectrographs into spec. I am wondering if we need to adjust the focus rings of both the red and blue cameras so that the collimator can be moved to "zoom out" a little and still be in focus? It does however bring up the uncomfortable question of what has changed so that we would need to do this? 11:16Z preCalib (the ones that count are 24428 and 24429) 11:25Z First science 24430 Done in three. 12:14Z instChange Cartridge 7 1360 chunk68 12:18Z gotoField Needed FK5 and a compass. Only a faint glow of the FK5 hinted at its location some 25 arcseconds away. 12:32Z preCalib 12:38Z First science Aborted exposure when preCal results came in showing sp2 had shifted unacceptably out of spec in the dispersion direction. It also had gone into the yellow in the spatial direction. It sure looks like something is loose on sp2 or the latching mechanism for its slithead. 13:00Z closing for the night. 13:24Z endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4351 21:32Z 21:37Z 100 O 130.21 131.50 23 ignore 4352 21:50Z 22:05Z 100 O 134.79 138.43 38 ignore 4353 23:11Z 23:26Z 100 O 154.89 158.73 40 ignore 4354 07:04Z 07:21Z 100 O -86.40 -82.09 37 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y b1-L: 1179 hot col 154 b1-R: 1053 b2-L: 1262 b2-R: 1228 leftmost fiber cut off at both upper and lower left. r1-L: 1210 r1-R: 1256 faint hot col 1154 r2-L: 584 r2-R: 1384 hot col 1475 UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 24376, plate -9999 ------- 21:39 24376 0.0 bias ----- sequence 24377, plate 1135 ------- 22:44 24377 0.0 bias 22:49 24378 10.0 flat 22:51 24379 2.0 arc test 22:56 24380 2.1 arc test 22:58 24381 2.1 arc test ----- sequence 24384, plate 1506 ------- 14.9 15.2 20.5 14.4 Done 01:13 24385 10.0 flat 01:15 24386 2.0 arc 01:36 24387 900.1 target 02:04 24388 1500.1 target 02:33 24389 1500.1 target 03:06 24390 1800.1 target 03:10 24391 10.0 flat 03:12 24392 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24393, plate 1566 ------- 23.8 36.5 24.7 35.9 Done 03:35 24393 10.0 flat 03:38 24394 2.0 arc 04:02 24395 900.1 target 04:25 24396 1200.1 target 04:48 24397 1200.1 target 05:11 24398 1200.1 target 05:39 24399 900.1 target 05:42 24400 10.0 flat 05:45 24401 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24402, plate 1149 ------- 33.8 46.9 36.6 43.4 Done 06:05 24402 10.0 flat 06:07 24403 2.0 arc 06:37 24404 1500.1 target 07:05 24405 1500.1 target 07:33 24406 1500.1 target 08:01 24407 1500.1 target 08:19 24408 900.1 target 08:22 24409 10.0 flat 08:25 24410 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24411, plate 1432 ------- 23.4 16.3 24.7 16.4 Done 08:41 24411 10.0 flat 08:44 24412 2.0 arc 08:58 24413 600.1 target 09:11 24414 600.1 target 09:36 24415 1200.1 target ----- sequence 24416, plate 1439 ------- 21.6 18.5 21.9 17.1 Done 09:57 24416 10.0 flat bad 09:59 24417 2.0 arc bad 10:06 24418 0.0 bias bad 10:09 24419 10.0 flat bad 10:18 24420 2.0 arc bad 10:25 24421 2.1 arc bad 10:27 24422 2.1 arc test 10:43 24423 2.0 arc test 10:46 24424 10.0 flat bad 11:00 24425 2.0 arc bad 11:05 24426 10.0 flat bad 11:08 24427 2.0 arc bad 11:17 24428 10.0 flat 11:20 24429 2.0 arc 11:41 24430 900.1 target 11:55 24431 600.1 target 12:13 24432 900.1 target ----- sequence 24433, plate 1360 ------- 12:34 24433 10.0 flat bad 12:36 24434 2.0 arc bad 12:45 24435 331.0 target bad ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:08Z 4 1506 37.09 0.0027 51.02 -0.0010 210.39 -0.0108 0.999600 03:49Z 3 1566 3.55 0.0052 57.13 -0.0006 182.93 0.0053 0.999710 03:49Z 3 1566 3.45 0.0052 57.14 -0.0006 182.85 0.0053 0.999710 06:21Z 5 1149 52.96 0.0032 43.01 -0.0008 222.08 -0.0053 0.999910 08:51Z 6 1432 113.92 0.0000 61.53 0.0018 -86.93 -0.0211 1.000140 11:36Z 8 1439 173.21 -0.0023 81.29 0.0023 -7.66 -0.0148 1.000170 12:42Z 7 1360 239.12 0.0039 68.10 0.0049 74.53 -0.0086 1.000070 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7151 Stays: JL7152 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:08Z 4 1506 0.99960 3948 4727 280 37 51.0 -3.5 10 266 -
