APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday January 12, 2004 (MJD 53017) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Steph Snedden night: Jurek Krzesinski Dan Long visitor: Jian Ge (Penn State) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown: Night two. Since we didn't get on the sky last night we still need the following. Pointing model. Check new guider code. Jim's donut sweep. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- For about 6.5 hours tonight the humidity wasn't too high. In that time we got some of the shake items done. We collected new data and updated the pointing model (1.4 arcsec rms). We tested the latest version of the gGuide code with mixed results. We need more test time, so try using the new guider as long as there are no guiding problems (hot pixels being chosen etc). Use normal guider for remainder of run if problems are encountered. We did not get to Jim's forward/backward donut sequence. It has been incorporated into the science plan. The following software has been declared current. iop v3_125_1 mcp v5_24_0 (you can safely ignore plc v17/v18 mismatch) watcher v2_26_0 (sdsshost) ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ------ Engineering camera was left mounted for an imminent pointing model, so there was no spectro focus check. The pressure to the DIMM cover was 85 PSI and I had no trouble opening it today. Afternoon checkout was without problems. Night: ------ 00:21Z Humidity too high at sunset. We wait. 01:57Z Humidity drops slightly. We decide to start the fans and crack the doors. 02:25Z Enclosure open. 02:50Z Engcam focused. Seeing around 1.5 arcseconds. 03:05Z Instrument block check within a pixel (.28 arcsec) of desired center. 03:12Z Starting 72 point model. 03:40Z Model ends after 25 points. Accidentally used a grid file which observed the last 25 grid points of the 72 point model. The file has been renamed to avoid confusion in the future. ( GRID_LAST_25_PTS_OF_DEFAULT_72PT.DAT ) 03:47Z Starting full 72 point grid. GRID_9_8_27_88_T_30.DAT. This Has been copied to GRID_DEFAULT_72PT.DAT in an attempt to further reduce confusion on which to choose. 05:00Z Got a good data set. Fit was 4 arcseconds to the old model, which is pretty good. Allowing parameters to vary, we got a 1.4 arcsecond model. This was implemented. 05:19Z instChange. Changing to spectroscopy. 05:49Z Cartridge 4 1260 taurus63 Test of new guider code. We are still seeing guiding on hot pixels sometimes /data/spectro/guider/hot_pixels/gimg0064.fits In this case it is fiber 7. It is sometimes choosing the hot pixel as the center of the star. Other times it is putting the "x" halfway between the star and the hot pixel. The hot pixel has between 2700 and 2900 counts. If it really varies that much it may be that the dark subtraction still leaves a couple hundred counts. Might that be enough to fool the centroiding algorithm? Even using exposures of the same length as the dark, we still see cases where the crosses don't line up with the x's. See gimg0151.fits, gimg0152.fits. Seeing during this testing varied between about 1.5 and 2.5" Can we say with certainty that the overlay on the guider image with the x's and +'s are describing the actual centroid output by the guider? Or could it be this is created by some other software? We are seeing the hot pixel being chosen with the old guider software running too. gimg0135.fits, gimg0146.fits. 07:02Z Reverting to old guider code, and taking science data on cartridge 4. Arc for sp1 is out of spec on wsigma. We were unable to check focus this afternoon because the engineering camera was mounted. It is a little surprising given that we focused the spectrographs only two days ago in temperatures not too far from what they are now, and also suspicious that it is only in one spectrograph. This means unfortunately that the first science exposure (24625) is also bad. 07:52Z Taking a goSpecFocus set. We decided after seeing such a difference between sp1 and sp2, to cycle the slithead latches and take another set of Hartmann exposures. The results were nearly identical, so it wasn't the slithead latches. Collimate showed a .65 pixel error in sp1 and a .46 pixel error in sp2. Adjusting focus by -5920 in sp1 and -4174 in sp2. Here is another case of the requested move by collimate not being what one would expect given the results from SoS. The move on sp2 was 2/3 of the move of sp1, yet _all_ sp2 parameters were in the black in SoS, and all wsigma values for sp1 were in the red, and all xsigma values for sp1 were far into the yellow. 08:55Z Closing due to high humidity. The backside of the secondary was getting within 1 C of the dewpoint even though the dewpoint depression was running between 3.5 C and 4.0 C. 11:10Z Doors closed, fans off. Humidity continues to rise. 12:00Z Since no science frames were taken, we ran the cloudy night tapes with endNight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4363 22:03Z 22:19Z 100 O 151.81 155.85 40 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y b1-L: 1235 hot col 154 b1-R: 1038 b2-L: 1234 b2-R: 1212 r1-L: 1188 r1-R: 1231 faint hot col 1154, 1625 r2-L: 558 r2-R: 1442 hot col 1475 2 rightmost fibers cut off at upper right.
