APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday February 25, 2004 (MJD 53061) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Howard Brewington Mike Harvanek John Barentine (2nd half) Support: Craig Loomis Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Three plates finished (1745, 1364, 1378). A 4th plate may also be done. SoS would not reduce b1 of exposures 25312 and 25313 for plate 1605. Could someone please have a look and let us know if we finished this plate. Good data on another plate (1636). 2.1 hours lost to a computer problem caused by Scot's laptop. 1.25 hours lost to spectro collimation. PR 5887 filed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Normal afternoon checkout. Spectrographs did not need refocusing. 23:15Z Doors Open, Fans On. Night: ------ Clear but moon is up so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1636 (cartridge 4): An FK5 was found after clearing the previous offsets and doing a spiralPattern search. Two good exposures were obtained (3000 sec total) before this plate expired. Plate 1745 (cartridge 4): An FK5 was found after clearing the previous offsets. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (3300 sec total). The request for the postCal came too late. Plate 1605 (cartridge 8): Guide stars on the gotoField. The first science exposure was started a bit early (9 minutes before the plate officially became available). Around 0535Z Scot's laptop tried to take over the mountain (ask Scot or Craig). Around this same time the servers died and the 2nd science exposure failed to read out. We had to restart the servers twice, log out the ports, reboot the sp1 mechanicals and reboot the guider mac. We also cycled power on sp1 (exec boot) which probably was not required and then did an iack. The 2nd exposure was lost. We started a 3rd science exposure but when it read out it was bad (overexposed). We thought that the exec boot would have cleared the ccds but we were wrong. We issued a bias and all was well. Including the lost science exposure and the bad science exposure we lost about 2.1 hrs. It's unclear exactly what caused this problem but the 3.5 m also experienced similar problems around this time so we think it was Scot's laptop. The lost time was billed to "other software problem." We did another set of cals since it had been about 2 hours since the last set. We then tried a 4th science exposure. Upon checking the S/N^2 of the 4th exposure, it was discovered that the last set of cals showed that sp1 was out of collimation. We aborted the 5th science exposure and proceeded to redo the collimation. WHAT IS WRONG WITH SPECTROGRAPH 1??? THE DAMN THING KEEPS GOING OUT OF COLLIMATION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WITH LITTLE CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE. Another 1.25 hours lost! PR 5887 filed. We thought about switching to imaging but the satellite image showed clouds moving our way (they started to arrive shortly thereafter - 0830Z). SoS would not reduce b1 of exposures 25312 and 25313. sos_redo would not work (it said, "It appears as though sos_redo is already running"). Furthermore, when the sky lines of r1 were plotted for 25312 and 25313 they looked bad. Exposures 25312 and 25313 were displayed and visually inspected. They appear okay but we still don't know if this plate is finished. Could someone please have a look and let us know if this plate is done. Plate 1364 (cartridge 1): A spiralPattern search was needed to find the FK5. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (2700 sec total). The request for a postCal came too late. Plate 1378 (cartridge 6): Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 3 exposures but there was not enough time to get started on another cartridge so we took a bonus exposure for this plate. Four exposures totaling 3600 sec were obtained. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4482 21:41Z 22:37Z 100 O -170.47 -156.31 108 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 25279, plate 1461 ------- 21:53 25279 0.0 bias 21:56 25280 10.0 flat test 21:59 25281 2.0 arc test 22:06 25282 2.1 arc test 22:09 25283 2.1 arc test ----- sequence 25284, plate -9999 ------- 23:30 25284 0.0 bias 00:14 25285 0.0 bias 01:22 25286 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25287, plate 1636 ------- 9.4 9.6 9.9 15.3 02:09 25287 10.0 flat 02:12 25288 2.0 arc 02:43 25289 1500.1 target 03:11 25290 1500.1 target 03:14 25291 10.0 flat 03:16 25292 2.0 arc ----- sequence 25293, plate 1745 ------- 15.1 19.0 18.8 17.5 DONE 03:41 25293 10.0 flat 03:44 25294 2.0 arc 04:04 25295 900.1 target 04:27 25296 1200.1 target 04:50 25297 1200.1 target ----- sequence 25298, plate 1605 ------- ???????????????????
