APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday June 9, 2004 (MJD 53166) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long John Barentine ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We finished one plate tonight. That said, it wasn't a boring night watching the dust counter. We attempted imaging, found too much variation across the array to stay in survey spec, so we adjusted collimation. After adjusting, variation was much less, but the moon was up. We switched back to spectro, only to find sp1 way out of focus. This shot down our chance to finish two plates. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- 01:55Z Doors Open, Fans On 02:20Z Enclosure Open 02:52Z Cartridge 5 1615 17.3 19.2 17.6 17.0 Needed FK5 Excellent seeing. Will switch to imaging after this plate if it holds. 03:38Z preCalib 03:44Z First Science 27096 03:52Z twilight Done in three exposures 900,900,600 04:33Z instChange to imager - seeing still good and skies clear. Grabbing a quick bias while finishing the swap (balancing etc.) 05:05Z scanStripe 21 N lambda 17 to 34 Run 4663 --------- First science frame 18 Last science frame 118 SeeingRun called about 2/3 of the run bad despite median seeing of 1.3 to 1.4 arcseconds. We suspect it just didn't like the large fwhm variation across the array We elected to call this science, in hopes it might be salvageable skippy happy and in focus by frame 18 Dewar 6 is having a tough time staying in spec (with fwhm values between 1.5 and 1.7, especially in r), when the rest of the array is in the 1.1 to 1.4 arcsec range. 06:15Z ending drift due to deteriorating seeing. seeingRun is calling it bad even though median seeing is 1.3 to 1.4 arcseconds. There is just too much variation across the array. Last science frame 118. 3.5m is still getting good seeing, so we decided to check collimation. We found very right heavy donuts. homing/relaxing primary didn't change it. Adjusted collimation Primary setmir values Old 0 0 15.2 829.9 1.6 New 0 -19.6 10.7 586.5 1069.1 This is a pretty large change. The coma wasn't seen after last month's adjustment to the C actuator, but the poor relative performance of dewar 6 was. I'm hoping that seeing conditions last month masked the coma that was there all along. The other less appealing option is that something moved --- again. Donuts more uniform now, but astigmatism noticeable in focus chips. fwhm much more uniform across array. Hopefully this is sufficient for imaging until we can properly mechanically collimate the primary. New set of nominal mirror numbers were taken at the end of the night. Donut list: Before: 4664 11 +300 4664 15 -300 After: 4666 38 0 4666 43 +300 4666 48 -300 Currently they reside on sdsshost in /data/photo/optics/53166. and are being scp'd to phoenix. 08:25Z instChange back to spectro Cartridge 7 1423 2.7 3.6 2.9 3.9 08:41Z gotoField 08:55Z preCalib 09:03Z first science Had to abort and call it bad due to sp1 XSIGMA and WSIGMA being out of spec in the preCal. sp2 was fine. In an attempt to salvage something of the night we issued a guess of -3000 mechPiston to sp1 and took another preCal All this after checking collimation this afternoon with the rotator at 45 degrees. Harrumph, grumble, grumble. The preCal was in spec this time, but time is running out. Out of sheer stubbornness we start another science exposure as the window of observability closes on this plate, and the seeing heads south. With less than half an hour to twilight the only other choice is to close. 10:10Z closing ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4661 23:29Z 04:39Z 100 O -39.85 37.82 54 ignore 4662 04:47Z 05:04Z 100 O 39.97 44.14 42 bias 4663 05:08Z 06:16Z 21 N 17.23 34.28 127 science 4664 06:19Z 06:25Z 21 N 34.97 36.52 24 engineering 4665 06:31Z 07:56Z 82 N 38.02 86.55 156 engineering 4666 07:59Z 08:24Z 82 N 87.18 93.59 57 engineering ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4663 13 4 38 -6.300 0.386 3.600 1.456 0.00909 260 67 4663 18 4 45 -7.200 0.145 0.000 0.098 -0.00640 260 67 4663 65 4 54 -6.700 0.493 -1.500 0.809 -0.00486 256 67 4663 115 4 49 -5.400 0.116 -2.600 0.124 -0.00751 252 66 4666 27 4 26 -5.900 0.210 -0.400 0.128 -0.01212 181 57 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4663 24 1 67 281 13 -0.322 0.225 1.001 0.211 -0.00336 4663 24 1 67 281 15 -0.608 0.180 1.200 0.186 -0.00404 4663 24 1 67 281 11 -0.556 0.247 1.030 0.263 -0.00346 4663 24 1 67 281 12 -0.885 0.246 0.933 0.297 -0.00314 4663 24 1 67 281 14 -0.949 0.282 0.718 0.246 -0.00241 4663 41 1 67 282 19 -0.468 0.207 0.804 0.210 -0.00270 4663 41 1 67 282 13 -0.449 0.220 0.877 0.224 -0.00295 4663 41 1 67 282 9 -0.689 0.184 0.833 0.235 -0.00280 4663 41 1 67 282 12 -0.792 0.136 0.910 0.173 -0.00306 4663 41 1 67 282 14 -0.748 0.195 0.854 0.170 -0.00287 4663 76 1 66 285 8 -0.141 0.075 0.934 0.231 -0.00314 4663 76 1 66 285 15 -0.235 0.139 0.956 0.158 -0.00321 4663 76 1 66 285 15 -0.224 0.142 0.964 0.227 -0.00324 4663 76 1 66 285 17 -0.346 0.150 0.847 0.198 -0.00285 4663 76 1 66 285 13 -0.450 0.155 0.899 0.126 -0.00302 4663 93 1 66 287 14 -0.682 0.155 0.719 0.173 -0.00242 4663 93 1 66 287 17 -0.877 0.108 0.683 0.268 -0.00230 4663 93 1 66 287 25 -0.896 0.123 0.700 0.232 -0.00235 4663 93 1 66 287 12 -1.062 0.137 0.797 0.203 -0.00268 4663 93 1 66 287 15 -1.100 0.146 0.830 0.267 -0.00279 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 27087, plate -9999 ------- 23:25 27087 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27088, plate 1821 ------- 23:54 27088 10.0 flat test 23:57 27089 2.0 arc test 00:04 27090 2.1 arc test 00:06 27091 2.1 arc test 00:16 27092 2.1 arc test 00:18 27093 2.1 arc test ----- sequence 27094, plate 1615 ------- 17.3 19.2 17.6 17.0 Done 03:40 27094 10.0 flat 03:42 27095 2.0 arc 04:01 27096 900.1 target 04:18 27097 900.1 target 04:31 27098 600.1 target ----- sequence 27099, plate 1423 ------- 2.7 3.6 2.9 3.9 08:57 27099 10.0 flat bad 09:00 27100 2.0 arc bad 09:19 27101 900.1 target bad 09:36 27102 10.0 flat 09:38 27103 2.0 arc 10:01 27104 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:30Z 5 1615 -43.62 -0.0023 63.69 0.0007 143.46 -0.0216 1.000340 09:04Z 7 1423 272.35 0.0000 55.69 -0.0004 111.54 -0.0259 1.000220 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- endNight rejoiced to the following tapes Goes: JL7569-74, 83 Stays: JL7575-80, 84 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:30Z 5 1615 1.00034 -3356 -1566 70 -44 63.7 14.8 17 253 -
