APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday June 20, 2004 (MJD 53177) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman Steph Snedden Also rans: Mike Harvanek Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Despite clouds, finished three plates. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We think this has been noted before, but we still are not seeing the 121 deg az fiducial. The Problems section includes discussion of this afternoon's spectro warming event. We still don't know quite what caused it, but it doesn't look like it was due to an empty or low pressure dewar (Since it fixed itself BEFORE the dewar was changed) Early clouds and rain threat prevented a twilight-opening. We opened around 05:30Z and ... First up cart 9 , plate 1689. No GSOTGTF (hey, Pete- is this one in your acronym dictionary, yet? :>), but the standard -6" A offset brought all the guide stars in. We got the one needed exposure for this plate to finish it. 06:14Z: cart 8 plate 1572. GSOTGTF. We finished this in 5 exposures. 08:49Z cart 7 plate 1859 (low z). GSOTGTF. Finished in 4 exposures. endNight rejoiced and we welcomed in Summer. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4689 01:43Z 02:09Z 100 O 4.51 11.05 49 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 02:03 27335 0.0 bias 02:11 27336 0.0 bias 02:34 27337 0.0 bias 02:36 27338 0.0 bias 02:38 27339 0.0 bias 02:40 27340 0.0 bias 02:42 27341 0.0 bias 02:44 27342 0.0 bias 02:46 27343 0.0 bias 02:48 27344 0.0 bias 02:50 27345 0.0 bias 02:52 27346 0.0 bias All TEST ----- sequence 27347, plate 1689 ------- 05:06 27347 10.0 flat 05:09 27348 2.0 arc 05:54 27349 900.1 target 05:57 27350 10.0 flat 05:59 27351 2.0 arc DONE ----- sequence 27352, plate 1572 ------- 06:22 27352 10.0 flat 06:25 27353 2.0 arc 06:43 27354 900.1 target 07:06 27355 1200.1 target 07:34 27356 1500.1 target 07:37 27357 10.0 flat 07:40 27358 2.0 arc 08:13 27359 1500.1 target BAD (not enough signal) 08:36 27360 900.1 target DONE ----- sequence 27361, plate 1859 ------- 08:55 27361 10.0 flat 08:57 27362 2.0 arc 09:21 27363 1200.1 target 09:44 27364 1200.1 target 10:07 27365 1200.1 target 10:29 27366 1200.1 target 10:33 27367 10.0 flat 10:35 27368 2.0 arc DONE ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:37Z 9 1689 39.57 0.0001 76.85 -0.0012 215.30 0.0000 1.000340 06:32Z 8 1572 -57.97 -0.0003 74.53 0.0021 128.75 -0.0160 1.000120 09:00Z 7 1859 25.13 -0.0017 54.58 0.0013 200.83 -0.0184 1.000200 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:39Z 9 1689 1.00034 -3356 -1708 -50 38 77.1 15.3 14 186 gdr 1.3 06:32Z 8 1572 1.00012 -1185 68 -75 -58 74.5 15.6 16 207 gdr 1.2 09:00Z 7 1859 1.00020 -1975 -493 -25 25 54.6 13.1 8 173 gdr 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 01:58Z 62 38 13 142 (SE) 0 - 02:29Z 60 39 10 140 (SE) 0 - 03:01Z 59 38 5 96 (E) 0 - 03:33Z 57 40 17 73 (ENE) 0 - 04:05Z 57 38 9 89 (E) 0 - 04:35Z 60 37 1 137 (SE) 0 - 05:05Z 60 36 7 181 (S) 0 - 05:36Z 59 37 14 197 (SSW) 0 - 06:06Z 60 37 12 206 (SSW) 0 - 06:36Z 60 37 11 185 (S) 0 - 07:07Z 59 37 10 203 (SSW) 0 - 07:37Z 58 37 11 223 (SW) 0 - 08:09Z 58 39 8 182 (S) 0 - 08:39Z 57 38 4 171 (S) 0 - 09:10Z 56 38 5 180 (S) 0 - 09:42Z 56 39 7 180 (S) 0 - 10:13Z 57 37 5 189 (S) 0 - 10:44Z 57 37 6 262 (W) 0 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Ventilation started: 02:15 Z Opened: 05:20Z Closed: ~11:00Z ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_138_0 Watcher: v2_29_0 MCP: v5_25_0 TPM: tpm_v2_42_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2 November 11 2003 sdssProcedures: v1_90 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.4500 0.4450 Axial B 0.6770 0.6770 Axial C 1.1010 1.0980 Trans D -9.5250 -9.5280 Lateral E 10.5918 10.6172 Lateral F 10.6045 10.6172 GALILS Commanded: 5900. -3250. 2600. 7850. 10150. 9750. Here is the email traffic it generated: Steph: "This apparently happened just minutes after we closed up at twilight. I just came into the control room and there were red watcher warnings on the sp1 LN2 temps and CCD temps, as well as LN2 empty and fill fault warnings. For the last 6 hours however, the CCD and LN2 temps have been in spec. The first bias for all four CCDs was high and b1 was saturated. The second set of biases looked okay. I have taken several more biases, and SoS reports normal values. Did anyone respond to the problem while I was asleep, or did it heal itself?" Connie: "error sequence: secondary LN2 pressure errors for a fill that started about 10:40Z, more errors and both CCD dewars empty on spec 1 at 11:17Z, CCD temp errors from 12:04Z to about 13:00Z, at which time the dewar was clearly changed. Max CCD temp was -10C. if you can, take a bunch (10 or more) biases. There will be a tail of residual charge that will take some time to flush out, though it will not be as bad as if things had warmed up all the way. Thanks to whomever was watching from home and changed the dewar at 1pm." Steph: "Norm did the dewar swap, I believe (thanks Norm!), but I have it occurring at approx. 15:30Z. There was a fill at approx. 12:45Z. That must have been the fill that started the re-cooling. Jon B. suspects a secondary fill on sp1 may have started while we were hooking up the auto-fill, causing a pressure drop, but on second thought, I think the timing may be wrong for that scenario. We hooked up the autofill much earlier when we closed because of clouds, not at the time we shut down. In any event, I will do some more biases. Thanks for the sleuthing, Connie." The rest of afternoon checkout was without incident.
