APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday September 23, 2004 (MJD 53272) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden Dan Long Atsuko Nitta SN team (working day AND night) Dan Yocam Ben Dilday Hubert Lampeitl ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakeup & SNe ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Shake items (iop v3_141_0) o imager flat and biases were taken checked. All seems well. We did no see anything wrong with biases. o PR 6067 calcStripePositions, bestStartWrap, calcStripeAxis The commands work under new iop. We still need to work with Eric so that the commands take less time than they do now and the format of the output. Dan will update the PR once we (observers) agree on the desired output. o PR6109 servers need to watch for no response from camera to indicate that power is off The test was not quite designed the way planned. The test interrupted the communication to the imager rather than having the camera not respond when asked for its status. Eric will talk to Connie how to better test this PR. o tccmon v2_7. The SEGLong is now called "Mu" SN hunting: 82N Good data (759 frames) on moony and dark condition. Most of the dara has good seeing. Tere were wisps of tiny clouds at the very end of the run to make it more entertaining for the SN folks. As requested, the tapes with data from tonight are in the SN robot. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ----- Dan Yocum & I mounted the imager in the afternoon, ready for imager flats, SNe and IOP testing. Thus, there is no daily spectro focus check. Test version IOP servers are running. Imager bias taken on telescope. Night -------- Shake/SN hunting night. We wait for the sky to get dark enough so that we can take imager flats -- dark enclosure at least 30min past sunset. Checked the procedure change log and verified all changes listed were implemented correctly. PR6109 "servers need to watch for no response from camera to indicate that power is off" The recommended commands to test this interrupted communications to a greater degree than was desired. Once set cameraLatNode(im) sdss-ts-clean.apo.nmsu.edu was issued in the imager relay server ftelnet refused messages began appearing and it was no longer possible to type anything in the window so the port could not be changed. Since ftelnet was failing we couldn't get to the state where the "imager" was connected but not responding with its usual OK. I (Dan) don't know if it would have worked any better had we been able to enter the second command. set cameraPortNum(im) 2300 Eric said he would talk to Connie to come up with a better or more explicit way of testing this PR. PR updated to request modified test instructions. 02:03Z Run4855 Imager flat in the dark enclosure. While we were taking the flat, we got complaints from Watcher about axes. Dan thought that maybe iop/MCP expects the telescope to be tracking when doing non-bias drift and the fact that the stop button is in and the telescope not moving upsets iop/MCP. Here are the error messages we saw in Watcher: altitude (ABORT_EVENT: 2004-09-24 02:17:53Z) azimuth (ABORT_EVENT: 2004-09-24 02:17:53Z) rotator (ABORT_EVENT: 2004-09-24 02:17:53Z) It looks like teamster died during this run. Dan restarted a new one. 02:30Z Opened. PR6067 stripeAxisPositions, bestStartWrap, and scanStripe For the normal survey stripes, the commands stripeAxisPositions, stripeAxisRates, bestStartWrap, and scanStripe work and stripeAxisRates has the same result as the older iop v3_138_0. There isn't an older version to compare to with the Segue stripes, but when the telescope is slewed using scanStripe, the axis positions match those generated by the various stripe commands. All these new versions of the commands are TCL based, taking from 3 to 8 minutes to complete for longer scans (90+ degrees). The older C based stripeAxisRates completes the same task in about 15 seconds. PR left as assigned. While the commands work well enough to allow us to use v3_141_0 iop, there are some remaining issues. The change request will be modified in the near term to reflect observer input on what content and format of these checks of potential scans. Also the latency of these commands is troubling. One could imagine this taking 15 minutes or more if more than one iteration was needed to get the right track. 03:15Z Run 4856 Stripe 15N but outside the survey (part of testing the new iop) tccMon reports ist is 87N and SEGStripe 1075. We do not have survey stripe called 87N. Maybe the there was a 87N once a upon a time which is close to stripe 15N? After checking the positions via skippy, we stopped this run. skippy works fine. 03:57Z Run 4857 scanStripe 1260 S -mu 65 Verified that tccmon, skippy work as they should. 04:15Z Run 4858 82N lambda 122 seeing is good from the beginning. Watcher complains about the sky -- not surprising since it is very moony. Frame 29 Lambda126-Frame70 Lambda132 seeing acceptable While taking SN data, we used Run 4854 afternoonBias and ran checkBias, biasCheck, biasGen. We found no problem. biasCheck results in imaging detail section. Frame 189 Lambda 150-Frame 209 Lambda 153 seeing acceptable Around 06:15Z The std dev reported in cloud camera started to rise above to 06:40Z photometric condition, reaching up to 12 before coming down. Frame 519 Lambda 199.2 Seeing becomes acceptable Frame 528 Lambda 200.6 Seeing is now bad.... :( Frame 571 Lambda 207.0 Seing is back to good. :) The last three hours of this data is taken in the dark and photometric condition. 11:25Z (around Frame 743) Small fast moving clouds appeared in the cloud camera. They did not make the std. dev go above 6. Twilight starts in five min. 11:45Z Frame 760 lambda=-124.8 15min into twilight, we end the run 12:00Z Closed. We got alititude touched windscreen message while going up. We took the imager off the telescope and put it in the doghouse. We carefully brought the telescope down to stow position since we did not put the catridge on the telescope, i.e. it is out of balance. We shut down DIMM. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4854 23:17Z 23:34Z 100 O 61.57 65.91 43 bias 4855 02:02Z 02:22Z 100 O 103.00 108.00 47 engineering 4856 03:14Z 03:23Z 15 N 120.48 122.72 28 engineering 4857 03:58Z 04:09Z 1260 S -118.54 -115.69 33 engineering 4858 04:16Z 11:46Z 82 N 122.56 -124.62 767 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- biasCheck results: Writing file /astrolog/53272/idBiasCheck-004854.par CCD 11 Offset.
