Chicago) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernovae program then spectro science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 794 frames of imaging data on 82N for the supernovae program (though much is main-survey quality), plus 2 spectrographic plates finished and good data on a third. Several problems encountered, including another instance of a step change in image position on spectrograph sp2 (most notable in camera b2). Note that, due to tape problems, the ("idx-1") tapes to be shipped are currently in the supernovae machine drives, as they must be processed here before being shipped to FNAL. A separate email is being sent to people dealing with shipping. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation adjusted. See the Problems section for details. Problems with the tape in ID2-2 (no ansi label). A new tape and the single drive recovery procedure solved the problem. Windscreen touch during checkout may have been due to the telescope being out of balance (counterweights were at 15; we don't know why): altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2004-11-04 23:13:57Z sdssmcp): 2004-11-04 23:14:06Z) No other problems to report. Night: ------ Opening was a little delayed following the spectrograph work (see apo-daylog), but we were ready to go before the end of twilight. TPM errors listed at the end of the log. A nice reduction in spurious errors is noted! During the test skew on onpening, the 45deg altitude fiducial did not read going up. French knows about this. We started with imaging for the supernovae program, although a large fraction of the data obtained is of sufficient quality for addition to the main SDSS. See imaging details section. During imaging, tape id-2 failed. See imaging details section for what we did. At 09:04Z, we ended imaging and switched to spectroscopy, just as significant clouds started arriving from the west (despite southerly winds at ridge level). Spectroscopic observing sequence (guide stars found on gotoField unless noted: 09:22Z Plate 1866, cartridge 1. Main survey. Finished in 3 exposures, 3300 sec. FK5 needed to find guide stars. Excellent seeing. Yet again, the first preCalib flat (exposure 29152) showed Xmin for camera b2 to be out of tolerance, despite adjustment during the afternoon (albeit 7K warmer). Dan proceeded to adjust the sp2 collimator mirror by mechMove -1000 -1000 +1000 based on the approximately -10 pixel error. We lost 10 minutes. 11:00Z Plate 1920, cartridge 4. Main survey, with (S/N)^2 >= 11.5 from MJD 53313. Done in 1 additional exposure, 1200 sec. 11:39Z Plate 1926, cartridge 3. Main survey. The skyL value displayed by the watcher _is_ hgher than other z chips (about 319 counts this frame, but the plot of skyL has the same shape as other chips (range 193-247). Are we seeing a skyglow event? There is a solar coronal mass ejection due to arrive some time 2004-11-05. ~71 130.8 Both skyL and skR now out of tolerance for CCD 45. ~82 132.6 Sky levels back in tolerance for CCD 45, however it seems to have gone out of tolerance again during frames ~140-180. 481 192.3 Two degrees to Moonrise: start ramp down of main SDSS data 495 194.3 Moonrise - end of main SDSS data, SNe program data continue. 684 222.7 id1 tape drive 2 reported a write error (see problems section for full error messages). Since tape drive 1 continued, the frames were being flagged as "archived" in the pool (and hence the archiver queue depth was zero), so there is nothing to be done that could recover the data not written to tape 2. This leaves us with a small dilemma, in that the tape to go to Fermilab is needed at APO for supernovae analysis. So, we will start processing the tapes on the supernova clouster as soon as we switch to spectroscopy in the expectation that spooling of the tape will complete before tapes prepared for shipping in the morning.
