APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday November 16, 2004 (MJD 53326) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Mike Harvanek Night: Steph Snedden, Pete Newman Visitors: Bill Boroski (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Two problems with the spectrographs during afternoon checks. Bad weather prevented any observations. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Trouble with the spectrographs today. The first 2 bias attempts failed. Jon Brinkmann was notified. Turns out there was a problem with the sp2 power supply. Jon cycled the power on the supply. We took another bias and it read out successfully but it looked bad so we took another. This bias attempt failed. We took another bias and it succeeded although it gave an odd message during the attempt. Another bias succeeded. At this point, I realized I had not done an iack. An iack was issued and 2 more biases were successful. The sop dialog is included in the Problems section with some comments if anyone cares. There were also problems with the collimation check. Collimator motor C for sp1 was acting weird again (resetting or not moving the proper amount) and the fiber positioning on the CCD changed in the middle of the collimation check. Please see the Problems section for a detailed description. Night: ------ Clouds and freezing fog prevented all observations. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4967 22:53Z 23:20Z 100 O 108.86 115.62 56 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): No QA Procedures Done (y/n): No UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 29402, plate -9999 ------- 23:11 29402 0.0 bias bad - spectrograph problem 23:15 29403 0.0 bias 23:18 29404 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29405, plate 1925 ------- 23:26 29405 0.0 bias 23:32 29406 0.0 bias 00:25 29407 10.0 flat collimation 00:28 29408 2.0 arc collimation 00:32 29409 2.1 arc collimation 00:35 29410 2.1 arc collimation 00:51 29411 2.1 arc collimation 00:53 29412 2.1 arc collimation 01:04 29413 2.1 arc collimation 01:06 29414 2.1 arc collimation 01:23 29415 10.0 flat positioning - bad 01:26 29416 2.0 arc positioning 01:49 29417 10.0 flat positioning 01:51 29418 2.0 arc positioning 02:01 29419 2.1 arc collimation 02:03 29420 2.1 arc collimation 02:15 29421 2.1 arc collimation 02:18 29422 2.1 arc collimation ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- No tapes to be shipped or stored. ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:28Z 34 33 3 241 (WSW) 26614 - 23:01Z 33 33 0 103 (ESE) 25923 - 23:32Z 31 30 4 85 (E) 119 - cloudy, humid 00:04Z 31 31 0 117 (ESE) 132 - cloudy, humid 00:39Z 30 30 5 18 (NNE) 222 - cloudy, humid 01:10Z 31 29 0 36 (NE) 103 - cloudy, humid 01:42Z 31 30 5 58 (ENE) 106 - cloudy, humid 02:14Z 31 29 5 28 (NNE) 106 - Freezing fog 02:46Z 31 29 11 47 (NE) 173 - " 03:18Z 31 30 9 25 (NNE) 133 - " 03:50Z 31 29 11 43 (NE) 185 - " 04:22Z 32 30 10 37 (NE) 1069 - " 04:55Z 32 30 3 19 (NNE) 1264 - " 05:28Z 32 30 7 33 (NNE) 1414 - " 06:00Z 32 31 0 334 (NNW) 1013 - " 06:36Z 32 31 9 42 (NE) 555 - " 07:08Z 31 31 5 5 (N) 116492 - " 07:41Z 31 31 4 11 (N) 69020 - " 08:13Z 31 31 7 322 (NW) 2001 - " 08:45Z 31 31 4 344 (NNW) 102226 - " 09:17Z 31 31 3 339 (NNW) 138836 - " 09:49Z 31 31 1 21 (NNE) 51618 - " 10:22Z 31 29 0 344 (NNW) 655 - 10:54Z 30 30 15 358 (NNW) 64411 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Enclosure not opened. SoS shows a very bad number of lamps for both frames. I assume the lamps did not all come on and I take another set of Hartmann frames (29413, 29414). Both these frames also have a very bad number of lamps. I go down to the telescope and examine both sets of lamps. They are fine. I take a postCal (frames 29415, 29416) and discover that the positioning of the fibers on sp1 has changed by 39 pixels (increase) and that on sp2 has changed by 13 pixels (decrease). I now wonder if perhaps collimator motor C on sp1 really did move too much. However, if this is the case, why did the positioning change on sp2 also? I reposition the fibers on the ccd. sp1> mechMoveColl 3200 3200 -3200 sp2> mechMoveColl -1500 -1500 1500 sp1 Coll_motor_A 10314 Coll_motor_B 14059 Coll_motor_C -761 sp2 Coll_motor_A 9736 Coll_motor_B -2688 Coll_motor_C -2654 Another postCal (frames 29417, 29418) showed the fiber positioning to be back in spec.
