APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday January 12, 2005 (MJD 53383) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Howard Brewington, Pete Newman Support: Craig Loomis, French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Six plates finished (1621, 1753, 1782, 1870, 1940, 1969) and good data on two others (2040, 2068). Some time lost to high humidity, and some difficulties with the west enclosure door with T = -8C. Day crew please check operation (see log for details). NB: The murmur log tonight has time stamps in MST not UT. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We refocussed the spectrographs, but as the enclosure was ~ 3K warmer than outside air, we moved the focus an additional 3000 counts beyond that recommened by collimate. See end of log for details. We had an imager ion pump spike to 3.05 uTorr around 23:05Z that decayed to below 1 uTorr within an hour. The DIMM has a problem with the telescope internal computer and/or the az drive. See PR6310. The murmur server did not start automatically on rebooting sdsshost, so we issued a start_mursrvr command manually. This worked, but, strangely, the murmur log was time-stamping events in MST instead of UT. Craig is investigating. Other time stamps (logTool activities, data file headers) are in UT as normal, so we plough on regardless. Snow flurries before sunset from a partly-cloudy sky delayed ventilation of the telescope. The last heavy clouds from last night's storm moving over from the north also delayed opening until 01:10Z, still before the end of twilight. The moon is up until 03:05Z, so we start with spectroscopy. Guide stars on gotoField with prior offsets unless noted. 01:40Z Plate 2040, cartridge 2. Not done in 5 exposures, 6600s. SEGUE plate requiring (S/N)^2 > 15 in the b1 and b2 (but read on). Guide fiber 9 was not showing the centroid mark in the guider monitor, so we disabled it. We suspect that the guider dark frames need updating for the current cold temperatures and will try to renew them tomorrow. Seeing poor and variable. The first exposure had a discrepantly low S/N for b1 while b2 was consistent with the r cameras. We therefore ignored the b1 S/N and aimed for (S/N)^2 > 30 in b2, per the science plan. We did not finish this plate before passing beyond its design time. Moon now set but still a few clouds and continued poor seeing (probably due to northerly wind), so we stay with spectroscopy. 04:00Z Plate 2068, cartridge 3. Not done in 1 exposure, 1500s, even when combined with data from MJD 53381. SEGUE faint plate requiring (S/N)^2 >= 50 in all cameras. On trying to start the second exposure, we had a ptVME failure that crashed Howard's SOP session and the servers. We issued a ptvmeReset and restarted the servers and SOP sessions and continued. By the time we had recovered, the design time for this plate had passed, so we moved on. 04:57Z Plate 1782, cartridge 9. Done in 1 exposure, 900s, when combined with data from MJD 53381. SDSS plate. 05:35Z Plate 1870, cartridge 7. Done in 3 exposures, 2400s. SDSS plate. 06:39Z Plate 1940, cartridge 6. Done in 3 exposures, 1920s. SDSS plate. 07:47Z As we went to swap cartridges, the dew-point depression finally went below tolerance and we detected the start of dew on exposed telescope surfaces, so we closed. The west roll-up door refused to start closing at first (frozen?), but we switched to the chain drive and moved it a foot, then the motor was able to drive it. It was stuck again trying to open at 10:30Z, and on closing at 13:20Z, all possibly frozen down with T ~ -8C. Would the day crew please check operation when it's warmer? On re-opening, we noted that the northeast truck under the enclosure was making a periodic clunk moving east. We discussed this with French, who believes it is a known misalignment that is worse under cold conditions (T ~ -8C at the time). 10:41Z Plate 1753, cartridge 5. Done in 1 exposure, 600 s, when combined with data from MJD 53381. SDSS plate. Guide fibers 5 and 11 needed to be disabled (why didn't we get new guiderDarks while we were closed?). Seeing now excellent, but humidity rising again! 11:10Z Plate 1621, cartridge 8. Done in 1 exposure, 1020 s, when combined with data from MJD 53379. SDSS plate. Guide fiber 11 disabled. 11:43Z Plate 1969, cartridge 1. Done in 3 exposures, 3600s. SDSS plate. Guide fiber 11 disabled. endNight finished well. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5107 22:30Z 22:55Z 100 O 159.34 165.61 45 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Y QA Procedures Done (y/n): N UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30410, plate -9999 ------- 22:26 30410 0.0 bias 22:30 30411 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30412, plate 1753 ------- 23:05 30412 10.0 flat Focusing 23:08 30413 2.0 arc 23:15 30414 2.1 arc 23:17 30415 2.1 arc 23:36 30416 2.1 arc 23:39 30417 2.1 arc ----- sequence 30418, plate 2040 ------- 2.5 17.1 23.7 50.5 Not done 01:35 30418 10.0 flat 01:38 30419 2.0 arc 01:57 30420 900.1 target 02:25 30421 1500.1 target 02:47 30422 1200.2 target 02:50 30423 10.0 flat 02:53 30424 2.0 arc 03:22 30425 1500.2 target 03:50 30426 1500.2 target 03:53 30427 10.0 flat 03:55 30428 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30429, plate 2068 ------- 9.8 5.7 10.0 7.9 Not done 04:12 30429 10.0 flat 04:14 30430 2.0 arc 04:43 30431 1500.1 target ----- sequence 30432, plate 1782 ------- 4.2 3.6 4.5 4.9 Tonight 05:04 30432 10.0 flat 18.2 11.7 17.8 14.6 MJD 53381 05:07 30433 2.0 arc ---- ---- ---- ---- 05:26 30434 900.1 target 22.4 15.3 22.3 19.5 DONE 05:31 30435 106.1 target Ignore ----- sequence 30436, plate 1870 ------- 15.4 14.7 18.2 18.2 DONE 05:43 30436 10.0 flat 05:45 30437 2.0 arc 06:04 30438 900.1 target 06:22 30439 900.1 target 06:35 30440 600.1 target ----- sequence 30441, plate 1940 ------- 25.3 14.6 29.0 21.2 DONE 06:46 30441 10.0 flat 06:49 30442 2.0 arc 07:08 30443 900.1 target 07:27 30444 900.1 target 07:47 30445 1020.1 target ----- sequence 30446, plate 1753 ------- 4.2 3.2 3.9 2.8 Tonight 10:49 30446 10.0 flat 26.6 13.1 26.4 12.7 MJD 53381 10:51 30447 2.0 arc ---- ---- ---- ---- 11:05 30448 600.1 target 30.8 16.3 30.3 15.5 DONE ----- sequence 30449, plate 1621 ------- 7.0 3.2 6.7 3.8 Tonight 11:16 30449 10.0 flat 13.7 11.9 12.9 10.8 MJD 53378 11:19 30450 2.0 arc ---- ---- ---- ---- 11:39 30451 1020.1 target 20.7 15.1 19.6 14.6 DONE ----- sequence 30452, plate 1969 ------- 19.0 15.6 24.4 14.4 DONE 11:51 30452 10.0 flat 11:53 30453 2.0 arc 12:11 30454 900.2 target 12:34 30455 1200.2 target 13:02 30456 1500.1 target 13:05 30457 10.0 flat 13:08 30458 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:57Z 2 2040 -68.98 -0.0016 73.63 -0.0017 119.29 0.0181 1.000090 05:48Z 7 1870 145.00 -0.0007 62.78 -0.0018 -52.92 -0.0146 1.000050 06:56Z 6 1940 86.06 0.0003 62.48 -0.0024 250.16 -0.0009 1.000030 10:55Z 5 1753 -0.47 0.0001 71.72 -0.0016 179.50 0.0118 1.000150 11:24Z 8 1621 -2.81 -0.0009 64.56 -0.0009 177.52 0.0006 1.000150 12:01Z 1 1969 269.00 -0.0015 66.36 -0.0003 103.52 -0.0019 1.000090 ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8260 Stays: JL8261 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:57Z 2 2040 1.00009 -889 765 375 -69 73.6 -6.2 17 12 BG38 2.4" 04:47Z 3 2068 1.00000 0 1445 250 -49 45.7 -6.9 12 344 BG38 2.4" 05:48Z 7 1870 1.00005 -494 987 250 145 62.8 -6.9 20 24 BG38 1.5" 06:56Z 6 1940 1.00003 -296 1151 250 86 62.5 -7.0 12 22 BG38 1.3" 10:54Z 5 1753 1.00015 -1481 127 225 0 71.7 -8.2 20 23 BG38 1.3" 11:24Z 8 1621 1.00015 -1481 141 225 -3 64.6 -7.4 17 18 BG38 1.4" 12:01Z 1 1969 1.00009 -889 602 200 269 66.4 -6.6 23 18 BG38 1.8" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:54Z 21 8 25 283 (WNW) -9999 -
