APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday April 24, 2005 (MJD 53485) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta The ET Team: Jian Ge (UF) Julian Van Eyken (UF) Support: Wendell Jordan Professor Connie Jon Brinkman Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The clouds came and went. We opened twice and got data on 4 plates! o ET team suspects fiber 11 on cart 8 plate E8013 might have fallen out of its hole. Please check the status of this fiber. o The header of the science frames on piggy back plate are not correct. PR was filed. o The air temp was below freezing when we observed piggy back plate, which means the spectraophs went out of collimation. :( ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------------- Wendell had to work hard this afternoon. I think much of the work he had to relates to the early morning storm we had. (I heard lots of rain and thunder after I went to bed.) Here is a part from Wendell: I noticed some water in various places along the enclosures west side on both level's. The water is not excessive but there is some slow steady dripping downstairs. Thus, I have placed absorbing pads at various places on both levels to soak the stuff up. Also, I noticed that neither of the two e-stops by the laptop were working. I then started checking e-stops all over the place only to find that none of them were working. I opened the PLC rack and found a blinking "fault" light and that the "run" light was not on at all. I then switched the PLC key to "program" mode then back to "run" mode. This corrected the PLC failure. I checked e-stops throughout and all seemed fine after this so called PLC cycling. ***end of Wendell's email****** I forgot I could not do collimation check with ET plates and tried to take a set of calib exposures. The exposures looked like biases. I called JB and he reminded me that I cannot do collimation check with ET plates. Sorry JB to call you for nothing. 01:45Z Doors cracked. But we will not open until the sky clears up. 06:20Z We open with cart 6 on. Cart 6 Plate 8011 -------------------- We went to field and while ET team calibrated. I went to field using yesterday's offset and found guide stars. The stars went behind clouds around 06:50Z. :( 07:30Z closed -- but doors open and fans running in case we get another clear patch.... 09:00Z Cleared up! Run to open the enclosure! Cart8 Plate 8013 ---------------- I had to use the fk5 star.. Even using last night's offset did not find the stars on gotoField. :( The fk5 was off to the west . The seeing is not too bad-- 1.5 to 1.9". The sky is mostly clear, but not photometric. The humidity is now climbing. Fiber 11 of this plate might have fallen out of its hole. Could Team French check on this? 10:06Z Off to the next plate. Cart 4 Plate 8014 ----------------- No gStars or fk5 on gotoField with offsets from 3 nights ago. :( The dew point diff is at 3C right now. If it goes up any more than this, we have to close. There are some clouds showing up again, but the seeing is about 1.5". 10:30Z French called to make sure all was well. 11:10Z Next plate! Cart 9 Plate 8015 (piggy back plate) ----------------- The FK5 was at the S sedge of Fib10. We took 30s exposures logTool showed that these 30s exposures were 0s exposures. When I checked the header, it said: EXPTIME = 0.00000000000000E+00 / Exposure time. (seconds) which is why logTool thought these were 0s exposures (bias!). He frames show there are flux. So definitely the shutter DID open. The logTool and exposures from few nights ago showed that the exposure time were recorded correctly in the logTool spectro section and the header of the frames. I will file this PR against spectrographs. It might be due to the new specMech code since this was not a problem few nights ago. 11:54Z I was stupid and moved the telescope to zenith so that ET team could do calibration before I got postCalib. So I moved it back to the field and took postCalib --- I hope this was OK. The humidity were high and the dew pt dep. dropped below 3.0 for a while but never less than 2.5. I checked the doghouse and telescope forks by hand to make sure we were ok during this time. The TPM reported the dew pt dep. about 0.1-0.3C larger than galileo's displayweath. endNight ran happily. The spectro went out of collimation.... No surprise since the air temp dropped below freezing by the time we observed. :( ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32224, plate 8015 ------- Piggy back plate 11:28 32224 30.0 target 11:34 32225 30.0 target NOTE: Heaaders for all science exp are wrong. 11:40 32226 30.0 target The spectros were not in collimation. 11:49 32227 30.0 target 11:52 32228 30.0 target 11:55 32229 30.0 target 11:58 32230 10.0 flat 12:01 32231 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:51Z 6 8011 222.19 0.0014 46.94 0.0018 81.29 -0.0163 1.000240 09:31Z 8 8013 -45.71 -0.0002 46.65 -0.0008 142.87 -0.0209 1.000090 10:30Z 4 8014 189.72 0.0047 54.41 0.0015 21.45 0.0034 1.000090 11:29Z 9 8015 147.93 0.0013 75.64 0.0046 -38.88 0.0252 1.000220 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:50Z 6 8011 1.00024 -2369 -222 550 222 47.1 1.6 21 281 gdr 2.8 09:31Z 8 8013 1.00009 -889 856 400 -46 46.6 -0.7 13 312 gdr 1.7 10:27Z 4 8014 1.00009 -889 1002 570 189 54.5 -1.1 5 344 gdr 1.5 11:29Z 9 8015 1.00022 -2171 -95 580 148 75.7 -1.6 10 324 gdr 1.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 02:33Z 39 26 20 257 (WSW) 1317 - 03:05Z 38 26 14 258 (WSW) 2318 - 03:37Z 37 23 24 282 (WNW) 1651 - 04:10Z 37 23 19 285 (WNW) 2409 - 04:42Z 36 22 21 271 (W) 2530 - 05:14Z 36 21 11 272 (W) 1464 - 05:46Z 35 20 16 291 (WNW) 1374 - 06:19Z 34 21 17 289 (WNW) 1021 - 06:49Z 34 21 18 285 (WNW) 745 - 07:19Z 34 21 16 294 (WNW) 754 - 07:50Z 33 23 12 306 (NW) 798 - 08:22Z 32 24 10 316 (NW) 563 - 08:54Z 32 23 14 284 (WNW) 455 - 09:24Z 31 23 11 287 (WNW) 447 - 09:55Z 30 23 12 295 (WNW) 491 - 10:27Z 30 24 8 348 (NNW) 517 - 10:59Z 29 24 12 302 (WNW) 490 - 11:29Z 29 24 9 323 (NW) 517 - 12:01Z 29 24 12 1 (N) 566 - 12:33Z 28 23 10 14 (NNE) 706 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:45Z Doors crakced with fans on. 06:20Z Put cart6 on and open!
