APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday June 7, 2005 (MJD 53529) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Dan Long Mike Harvanek Support: French Leger visitors: Mike Soukup Mark Rabbage (BBC) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We imaged all night. Photometric deviations shown by the cloud camera are either insects (04:50Z to 06:10Z) or slight structure (06:30Z to 07:20) where the standard deviation did not exceed 8. We called the whole night photometric. We filled 2 imaging holes: 36 S from lambda -10 to -9 and 12 N from lambda 0 to +2 We imaged 1140 S from mu 257 to 297. We imaged 1020 N from mu 269 to 277. We imaged 1062 S from mu 272 to 282. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- swing shift: ------------ Spectro focus and x-tilt adjusted. Details at the end of the log. The rest of the afternoon checkout was problem-free. DIMM: The VNC server died during DIMM setup. I started the seeing measurements at the Meade keyboard. We will run without the VNC session in the control room tonight, and rely on the web page. Craig was informed and gave a lovely grimace. Since nothing on the software side has changed at the DIMM computer, he is reading this as an early warning that we will have to replace the computer soon. Night: ------ When mounting the imager the west primary latch would not engage. Inspection of the latch showed nothing unusual. Dan noticed that the booster pump was going non-stop and the imager shutter pressure was reading 55 when it should have been at 80. It appeared that we had a leak somewhere. After some thought, Dan closed, opened and closed the spectrograph doors. After this, the imager shutter pressure increased to about 75 and we were able to engage all the latches. It appeared that this stopped (or at least slowed down) the leak. French inspected the system and found nothing unusual. He was a bit puzzled that the air pressure of the spectrograph doors could affect the primary latches. He will inspect the imager latches tomorrow. He would have done it tonight but we had already mounted the imager and were ready to get to work. We begin with imaging. Run 5400: On-telescope bias. The information for this run did not make it into the Imaging Summary section of the log. Run 5401: 36 S. Filling the hole. Everything good from the beginning (frame 9, lambda -16.5). Skippy said nu was a little high (around 7") but since this is such a short scan we decided to let it go. Ramp up begins at frame 36, lambda -12.5. The nu error reached 8" around frame 40, lambda -11.9. Science begins at frame 52, lambda -10 and ends at frame 60, lambda -8.8. This run was good from beginning to end (frame 77, lambda -6.3). Skippy reported the nu error at the end of the run to be around 7.7" so the nu error never got much above 8" during this scan. Run 5402: 12 N. Filling the hole. Everything good from the beginning (frame 9, lambda -2.6). The nu error for this run is back down to 1.2". This run was good from beginning to end (frame 57, lambda +4.7). The excursions of the cloud camera standard deviation away from photometric starting around 04:50Z and lasting until around 06:10Z are due to insects. Run 5403: 1140 S. Segue. Everything good from the beginning (frame 9, mu 253.4) to the end (frame 317, mu 299.7). The cloud camera showed some structure between 06:30Z and 07:20Z and the standard deviation was above 6 for some of that time but it didn't get much above 8. It settled back down to about 5 after 07:20Z. We are still calling it photometric. Run 5404: 1020 N. Segue. Skippy won't work on this strip (see the Problems section) but everything else is good from the beginning (frame 9, mu 266.5). We assume the pointing is good (it has been all night) and proceed without the benefit of skippy. We actually got skippy to work on frames 70-73 and all was well. We suspect that skippy was failing because of empty gangs (which we get a lot of when imaging crowded fields). This run was good from the beginning to the end (frame 104, mu 280.7). Run 5405: 1062 S. Segue. Everything good from the beginning (frame 9, mu 269.4) to end (frame 111, mu 284.8). endNight is still running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End
