APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday September 23, 2005 (MJD 53637) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swinger: John Barentine Night: Steph Snedden Kaike Pan support: Mike Harvanek French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown/Supernova ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 82 N was imaged in light clouds, acceptable seeing (1.8") for SN program and some moon from lamba +115 to +211. The scan continued till frame 816 but the data after frame 660 (lambda +211) were obtained in heavier clouds and poor seeing and are probably useless. We had TCC error at lest four times during the night (see problem section). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- Had to power-cycle reboot the laptop at the telescope, finding it dead in the water again. No other issues during checkout. Steph cleared off a TON of disk space on sdsshost2, so we're good to go for the next few nights. Night ----- Run 5631: On-telescope bias taken in twilight. Run 5632: a short science drift started at a wrong lambda. labeled ignored. Run 5633: 82 N, started at lambda +113 (02:25Z), reached lambda +115 at frame number 18. Everything, seeing, focus, and pointing, seems good from the beginning. CCD90 value droped at 62 and came back after 2 frames. We also noticed that CCD90 value is noisier than it used to be (the max. variation from one frame to another is about 10 focus units whereas CCD60 has max variation of about 1 focus unit).However, as David noticed, the blue line in the plot of focus loop is exactly a mirror image of CCD60 value with a constant offset of about 20 focus units. The focus loop was struggling, could not get into focus till the 40th frame, then we stopped the loop, and restarted it, it quickly got in focus at the 45th frame (the focus was probably good since the begining, just the focus loop could not find it out). Seeing was about 1.4" to 1.5" at the begining, and went to acceptable level at frame 73, lambda 123, went bad at frame 117, lambda 130, then back to accteptable at frame 198, lambda 142, and to good at the frame 239, lambda 148. Seeing was changing continuously. It went bad at frame number 278, and lambda 154, back to acceptable/good at frame 554, lambda 195. Moonrise at approximately frame 233, lambda +147 (04:35Z). Clouds started to accumalte in the west, about 10 degree apart from imaging area, at about 8:0z. At about 8:50Z, frame 660, thick clouds entered the imaging field. The scan continued till frame 816, lambda -125.5 (10:30Z) when it was stopped due to thick clouds, and threntening of rain (actually we were lucky that it rained just closed the enclosure). endnight rejoinced. Shakedown: ----------- We checked frame 50 for camera column 3 and 5, the field convertion works fine. the RA and DEC are correct in the fit headers, and the images for five filters show the same pattern as they should be.
