APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday November 22, 2005 (MJD 53697) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Howard Brewington Mike Harvanek (swing) Steph Snedden Jon Brinkmann - support ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Completed all of 82,S. Got one exposure on Cart 03, Plate 2302, which tested the spectros and guider. During the spectro QA, we noticed that one side of the r2 chip had low counts;see log. Finished all but one of the shake tasks; see problems section. We noticed that the piece of tape on the rot axis that's used to determine when the rot is at zero is slightly off again although the mcpMenu indicates the rot is at zero. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- We're still getting a NaN value for IPARATE in spectro fits header warning when taking spectro images. See the Problems section for details. No formal spectro collimation done today (supernova night) but a postCal showed all the xsigma and wsigma values to be in the black. Night: ------ Imager mounted. Building closed up for a bias. Run 5894: On-telescope bias in a darkened enclosure. Everything looks fine. Night: --------------- We mounted the imager and pulled the enclosure at sunset while clouds approached from the west. The scope was pointed at 82,S for superNova science. See Imaging Details for more imformation. We had to make pointing corrections in rot (480") and el (11.5"). We finished the stripe and mounted a spectro cartridge. 10:15Z Cart 03, plate 2302. Guide stars on go to field with offsets from the previous imaging run. When we started the guider we got the following error. SOPGUI: startGuider 10 Using 10 second gcam exposures 2005-11-23 10:11:24Z: Using da centroider because flat does not exist 2005-11-23 10:11:24Z: Using da centroider because flattener does not exist 2005-11-23 10:11:24Z: Using da centroider because maskdark does not exist 2005-11-23 10:11:24Z: Using da centroider because dark does not exist 2005-11-23 10:11:24Z: Using da centroider because mask does not exist 2005-11-23 10:11:24Z: Using da centroider because fiberData does not exist We did another goToField with another guiderFlat and was able to start the guider. As part of the spectro QA, we noticed that the bias frames sdR-r2-00035000.fit and sdR-r2-00035001.fit had a low number of counts on the darker side of the displayed image, i.e., about 460 counts. Whereas the brighter side of the displayed image was about 1300 counts. This was not the case with the bias frames from the other cameras. We also noticed that the science frames had low counts on the dark side of the displayed image on the science frames of the r2 chip/camera. The test version of IOP was declard current. Yet, we had a problem when we tried to declare the test verion of Watcher current; see below. (maybe this wasn't the right syntax, but we were using Mike's model for iop in Folklore) [observer@sdsshost2 observer]$ ups declare -c -f Linux+2.4 watcher v2_31_0 INFORMATIONAL: Product 'watcher' (with qualifiers ''), has no product home Specification did not include a -r for product directory INFORMATIONAL: Product 'watcher' (with qualifiers ''), has no table file Specification did not include a -m for table file only default actions will be performed ERROR: Error in call to fopen: Permission denied ERROR: Unable to open file /linuxp/db/watcher/current.chain. PR 1700 (runlogs mailed automatically as part of endNight), PR6721 (IOP tools), PR6718 (CalStripeParams), PR 6719 (mechSend), and PR6729 (goDrift default stripe) were tested as part of shake and found to work as advertised and closed. endNight finished and was happy. See Problems Section for misc Watcher messages. We mailed Steph a shake summary. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5893 22:24Z 22:41Z 100 O 107.32 111.59 43 ignore 5894 00:02Z 00:23Z 100 O 131.71 137.14 50 bias on-telescope 5895 01:13Z 09:35Z 82 S 111.75 -122.38 855 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 5894: Bias, T-bars unlatched, on telescope, in darkened enclosure ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Run 3895: superNova Science, 82 S, 115 to (with 2-degree ramps) Started the run ~30 min before 18 deg twilight to get set up and hit the ramp at 18 deg twilight.
