APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday December 6, 2005 (MJD 53711) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long Steph Snedden Mike Harvanek (swing) Viktor Malanushenko Olena Malanushenko Connie Rockosi - support Eric Neilsen - support (by phone) Kurt Biery - support (by phone) Bill Boroski - visitor ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 7 plates completed; a mix of SEGUE and Legacy spectroscopy. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The spectro pool was full and we could not take data because apparently the DA does not know that it can overwrite files with the archive flag set. Connie Rockosi and Dan Long looked into the problem and decided that it was okay to delete some of the old files in the pool. Eric Neilsen and Kurt Biery were called. PR 6796 was filed. No spectro collimation check was done due to time lost to the above problem and to emergency closure training. However, conditions are almost identical to last night and we expect the collimation to still be good. No other problems to report. Night: ------ We started the night with spectroscopy, because of moonlight. 00:31Z - Cartridge 7, plate 2061, SEGUE faint. GSOGTF 01:20Z Science started. We chased the focus for the first exposures as the telescope equilibrated. We finished this plate with a total exposure time of 4800 s, after adding in previous night's exposures. 03:00Z - Cartrige 8, plate 2321, SEGUE faint. GSOGTF Finished this plate with a total exposure time of 8400s. The Moon had set, but seeing deteriorated, so we continued with spectroscopy. 06:00Z - Cartridge 3, plate 2299, SEGUE bright GSOGTF This plate gave many warnings about sky residuals and scattered light in r1. There was a lot of scattered light evident when we ran apoplotsky, which we attribute to many bright stars, some of which must have affected the sky fibers. Finished the plate with a total exposure time of 4800s. 07:50Z - Cartridge 1, plate 2269, Legacy No GSOGTF, used an FK5 glint to center the guide stars. Finished this plate with a total exposure time of 3300s. At this point we seriously considered switching to imaging, as the seeing had improved, but the presence of a huge front approaching from the NE made us think that the good seeing was temporary. We decided to go with the bird in the hand and continue spectroscopy. 09:19Z - Cartridge 5, plate 2278, Legacy GSOGTF. Finished this plate, with a total exposure time of 3200s. Seeing remained good 10:35Z - Cartridge 6, plate 2026, Legacy No GSOGTF, but applying a previous offset for this part of the sky brought them into the fibers. Finished this plate in a total exposure of 2600s. 11:40Z - Cartridge 9, plate 2281, Legacy No GSOGTF, but the "educated guess" offsets brought them in. We finished this plate with a total exposure time of 2000s (added to previosly obtained signal). The bad seeing that our neighbors to the east had (NM Skies) didn't materialize until the last plate. This was later than we expected. 20-20 hindsight says we could have switched to imaging. On the other hand, we did get a lot of good spectroscopy done tonight. endNight finished rejoicingly. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5937 22:13Z 22:53Z 100 O 118.37 128.30 78 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 35261, plate -9999 ------- 22:35 35261 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35262, plate -9999 ------- 22:55 35262 0.0 bias 22:57 35263 0.0 bias 23:06 35264 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35265, plate 2061 ------- 01:08 35265 10.0 flat 01:10 35266 2.0 arc 01:34 35267 1200.1 target 01:57 35268 1200.1 target 02:19 35269 1200.1 target 02:42 35270 1200.1 target 02:45 35271 10.0 flat 02:47 35272 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35273, plate 2321 ------- 03:04 35273 10.0 flat 03:06 35274 2.0 arc 03:29 35275 1200.1 target 03:52 35276 1200.1 target 04:15 35277 1200.1 target 04:38 35278 1200.1 target 05:02 35279 1200.1 target 05:25 35280 1200.1 target 05:47 35281 1200.1 target 05:51 35282 10.0 flat 05:53 35283 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35284, plate 2299 ------- 06:10 35284 10.0 flat 06:12 35285 2.0 arc 06:35 35286 1200.1 target 06:58 35287 1200.1 target 07:20 35288 1200.1 target 07:43 35289 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35290, plate 2269 ------- 08:01 35290 10.0 flat 08:03 35291 2.0 arc 08:21 35292 900.1 target 08:44 35293 1200.1 target 09:06 35294 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35295, plate 2278 ------- 09:24 35295 10.0 flat 09:27 35296 2.0 arc 09:46 35297 1000.1 target 10:05 35298 1000.1 target 10:28 35299 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35300, plate 2026 ------- 10:43 35300 10.0 flat 10:46 35301 2.0 arc 11:05 35302 1000.1 target 11:21 35303 800.1 target 11:37 35304 800.1 target ----- sequence 35305, plate 2281 ------- 11:53 35305 10.0 flat 11:55 35306 2.0 arc 12:14 35307 900.1 target 12:35 35308 1100.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:41Z 7 2061 99.11 0.0000 56.71 0.0000 257.17 0.0000 1.000200 01:20Z 7 2061 95.79 0.0025 64.70 0.0002 259.32 0.0056 1.000180 02:25Z 7 2061 88.48 0.0025 78.39 0.0002 260.96 0.0056 1.000040 03:11Z 8 2321 31.72 0.0021 60.27 -0.0008 206.22 0.0159 1.000010 04:29Z 8 2321 -9.57 0.0021 63.55 -0.0008 171.70 0.0159 0.999990 06:15Z 3 2299 159.32 -0.0002 53.94 -0.0019 -43.19 0.0143 0.999900 08:10Z 1 2269 67.14 0.0040 57.61 0.0002 233.66 0.0132 1.000080 09:35Z 5 2278 46.61 0.0007 68.74 0.0010 219.55 0.0140 1.000020 10:41Z 6 2026 97.81 0.0042 62.64 0.0003 259.79 0.0299 1.000120 11:51Z 9 2281 -46.97 0.0011 70.18 0.0019 139.46 0.0306 1.000090 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:41Z 7 2061 1.00020 -1975 -123 350 99 56.7 -4.0 9 302 -
