APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 18, 2005 (MJD 53723) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Dan Long Support: Craig Loomis (by phone) Kaike Pan ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Spector Monthly Checkout ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Summary: A couple of old MJDs removed from files1 to make space. Now have 317GB free on files1 and 139GB free on /data. endNight has already been run for all days during bright time for which there was any data taken (at least *Report files exist for all those days), 53715, 17, 18, 20, 21. Thank you Steph, or whoever did this. Spectro monthly checkout completed using the test version of iop. The spectrographs were pretty stable. No changes were needed to positions or focus, a first for spectro monthly checkout for me at least. Focus currently set for about 0 C. There was one strange occurrence while taking the 25 biases. It stopped after 19 frames and the frame it stopped on (35543) looked like each camera's frame was made from sections of the others. See the main log for sop's complaints. Subsequent exposures were fine. In preparation for moving the telescope, the imager was returned to the single 180l dewar configuration. Since there was only 138 lb in the heaviest of the three dewars, the three half full ones were placed outside and a new one put on (sorry Norm). Craig cut the new mcp version, v6_1, which runs from sdsshost2. A far from exhaustive check of moving the telescope with the mcp and TCC showed no obvious problems. It was decided not to implement fiducial tables from the recent data. The data taken for last dark run was taken at -2C and this data at about +2. Given that it is likely to be colder during the run, the previous set is probably a better match. A check of the scale differences showed only a small change anyway. The rotator offset was corrected. It turns out that the current version of mcp_fiducials (v1_44) on sdsshost2 used data files from the October bright time, but somehow the same version on sdsshost used data files generated a year earlier. This explains why the offset in the rotator seen right after the summer shutdown returned again last run. The instrument blocks for imager and spectro had their rotator angles returned to what they were prior to the last dark run, now that the rotator offset is gone. When poking around in the instrument blocks I noticed that the engcam block had its image center changed by about 8 pixels or nearly 2 arcseconds. Normally no change is required here. Special attention should be paid to checking the center of rotation before taking the pointing model tomorrow to see if it is changing. endNight completed but only after some cajoling as it complained of a lack of imaging and PT data. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Spectro Monthly checkout details: --------------------------------- Cartridge 8 2334 used for checkout status before any changes sp1> mechSend s spMechVersion v2_5_0 Bootup 719771169 SpectroID 1 SlitID 40 Air On Shutter_open_sensor Off Shutter_closed_sensor On Left_open_sensor Off Left_closed_sensor On Right_open_sensor Off Right_closed_sensor On Coll_motor_A 4000 Coll_motor_B 4004 Coll_motor_C 3999 Requested_exp.time 0.0 Exp_time_left 0.0 Last_exp.time 8.1 Exp_state None Shutter_open_transit .72 Shutter_close_transit .55 Coll_motor_A_status 0x85 Coll_motor_B_status 0x85 Coll_motor_C_status 0x84 sp2> mechSend s spMechVersion v2_5_0 Bootup 719771169 SpectroID 2 SlitID 8 Air On Shutter_open_sensor Off Shutter_closed_sensor On Left_open_sensor Off Left_closed_sensor On Right_open_sensor Off Right_closed_sensor On Coll_motor_A -6503 Coll_motor_B -9758 Coll_motor_C -9101 Requested_exp.time 0.0 Exp_time_left 0.0 Last_exp.time 8.1 Exp_state None Shutter_open_transit .72 Shutter_close_transit .64 Coll_motor_A_status 0x84 Coll_motor_B_status 0x84 Coll_motor_C_status 0x85 All X-position parameters in the black b1 r1 b2 r2 4.7 4.9 3.3 11.5 2025.7 2045.6 2020.6 2055.8 All W-position parameters in the black b1 r1 b2 r2 3801.8 5769.4 3805.0 5802.0 6172.5 9222.3 6176.1 9248.6 Check of bias frames: b1 1205 1026 b2 1229 1204 On the right side of b2 there is some faint streaking to the left of really bright cosmic ray hits ( or hot pixels). r1 1188 1235 r2 466 1303 im> caget tpm_TM_PMSSAvg tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA tpm_TM_PMSSAvg 3.82929 tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA 4.3225 IDL 5.5a> collimate, 35521 Reading /data/spectro/53723/sdR-b1-00035521.fit Reading /data/spectro/53723/sdR-b1-00035522.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.44 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 1.19 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.47 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.41 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b1 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -14.8 degrees for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: (if red is already in focus) Log file = Collimate-53723-b1-00035521.log PostScript file = Collimate-53723-b1-00035521.ps Reading /data/spectro/53723/sdR-b2-00035521.fit Reading /data/spectro/53723/sdR-b2-00035522.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.23 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 0.48 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.17 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.14 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b2 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -5.1 degrees for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: (if red is already in focus) Log file = Collimate-53723-b2-00035521.log PostScript file = Collimate-53723-b2-00035521.ps Reading /data/spectro/53723/sdR-r1-00035521.fit Reading /data/spectro/53723/sdR-r1-00035522.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.73 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 0.06 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.24 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.35 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r1 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 3237 steps for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Issue SOP command: "sp1; mechPiston 3237" Log file = Collimate-53723-r1-00035521.log PostScript file = Collimate-53723-r1-00035521.ps Reading /data/spectro/53723/sdR-r2-00035521.fit Reading /data/spectro/53723/sdR-r2-00035522.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.79 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 0.03 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.19 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.25 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r2 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 2318 steps for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Issue SOP command: "sp2; mechPiston 2318" Log file = Collimate-53723-r2-00035521.log PostScript file = Collimate-53723-r2-00035521.ps My sop returned prematurely from the loop of 25 biases with the following messages. sp1 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 sp2 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 2005-12-19 01:39:43Z: Camera sp1 not idle: "READING" 2005-12-19 01:39:43Z: Camera sp2 not idle: "READING" Error: Aborting: Cameras not idle: "READING" sp1> 2005-12-19 01:39:43Z: registered (addr12) listener sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu:observer:26360 2005-12-19 01:39:43Z: Connection to sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu:observer:26360 has timed out; last packet 2005-12-19 00:57:37Z IOP running as Backup Relay Server requestListen: listening 7 2005-12-19 01:39:51Z 11 sp1 camcheck 2005-12-19 01:39:51Z 11 sp1 ln2stat 2005-12-19 01:39:52Z 11 sp2 camcheck 2005-12-19 01:39:54Z 11 sp2 ln2stat 2005-12-19 01:39:56Z: registered (addr13) listener sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu:observ I was then returned to the sop prompt with 6 more frames to go in the loop. The imager and spectro instrument block were returned to the state they were prior to the November dark run (they had been adjusted to compensate for the rotator offset we had last run). endNight had a little trouble with the odd data set. sp1> endNight Error sp1> tb couldn't open "/astrolog/53723/idReport-53723.par": No such file or directory invoked from within "param2Chain $dir/idReport-$mjd.par hdr" invoked from within "set chains [param2Chain $dir/idReport-$mjd.par hdr]..."
