APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 25, 2005 (MJD 53730) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing, Night: Mike Harvanek Elena Malanushenko Viktor Malanushenko Craig Loomis (by phone) Christmas Dinner: Steph Snedden Elisa Snedden - Steph's sister Xochitl Snedden - Steph's niece Russet McMillan Wayne West ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished 4 plates (1500, 2334, 2335, 2293 ) and collected some signal on plates 2340, 2075. We spent more than 3.5 hours (EXPOSURE TIME) on plate 2075 (segue faint) in fairly decent conditions (light clouds, good to okay seeing) and only got to S/N^2 of 35/40 (out of a needed 50) in r1/r2. Two questions: 1) Is there a problem with SoS? Although both versions give similar numbers we can't help but wonder if this plate is WAY done. Can someone please check it? If the plate is WAY done, can we do something to prevent this from happening in the future? 2) If there is not a problem with SoS, do we really want to be spending this amount of time to finish a plate? We could have finished three plates in the time spent doing 2075 tonight (and we didn't even finish 2075). Mike, Viktor and Olena would like to extend an extra special thank you to Steph, Elisa and Xochitl Snedden. They came to the observatory Christmas evening and cooked us a delicious Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and fixings. In addition, they did most of the clean up after dinner and Elisa gave the observers a new toy for the control room - a Lightastix construction system - which Viktor promptly put to use. We would also like to thank Russet McMillan and Wayne West who contributed multiple dishes to the dinner and Jackie Diehl (in absentia) who baked us 2 pumpkin pies even though she knew she wouldn't be attending the dinner. Finally, thank yous to Connie Rockosi, Scot Kleinman and Atsuko Nitta for calling just to wish us a Merry Christmas and to French Leger and Ruth Sabier for their sweet treats. All things considered, working on Christmas turned out to be much more pleasant than expected. Happy Holidays. Christmas day! Afternoon: No problems encountered during checkout. Spectro focus checked. No changes made. Night: It was photometric conditions at the beginning of the night but the weather forecast predicts cloudy soon, so we started with spectroscopy. 11:17 Z. Plate 1500 (cartridge 2): "Merged". Guide stars on the gotoField. Total exposure is 7200. S/N is 17.7. This kind of plates is evaluated with the same criteria as Survey, each data should have S/N grater than 15. "DONE". Light cirruses. We continue spectroscopy. 2:30 Z Plate 2334 (cartridge 8): "Segue". Guide stars on the gotoField. Total exposure is 2700. S/N b1=16.7 and b2=19.1. "DONE". 3:44 Z Plate 2335 (cartridge 7): "Segue". Guide stars on the gotoField. Total exposure is 3700. S/N b2=35.1. "DONE". 5:09 Z Plate 2340 (Cartridge 1) "Seguefaint", we have done only 2 exposures for total 2400 sec before the plate is expired. S/N=9.4. We did not have any other plate to cover this time. CONTINUE". 6:19 Z Plate 2075 (Cartridge 6)"Seguefaint". Guide stars on the gotoField. After 8 exposures we did post-calib as have been requred by SoS. We gave up on this plate after more than 3.5 hours of exposure time. Is there a problem with SoS? See the summary for more details. "CONTINUE" 10:52 Z Plate 2293 (Cartridge 5) "Chunk". Used fK5 star and some additional guess to find guide stars. S/N=16.1 5 exposures with total time 5700. "DONE" endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5954 23:02Z 23:19Z 100 O 149.32 153.58 43 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 35843, plate -9999 ------- 22:59 35843 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35844, plate 2340 ------- 23:07 35844 10.0 flat 23:10 35845 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35846, plate -9999 ------- 01:03 35846 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35847, plate 1500 ------- 23.7 17.9 26.2 17.7 DONE 01:17 35847 10.0 flat Merged 01:19 35848 2.0 arc 01:39 35849 900.1 target 01:56 35850 900.1 target 02:11 35851 720.1 target ----- sequence 35852, plate 2334 ------- 16.7 18.4 19.1 5.0 DONE 02:30 35852 10.0 flat Segue 02:32 35853 2.0 arc 02:53 35854 900.1 target 03:11 35855 900.1 target 03:29 35856 900.1 target ----- sequence 35857, plate 2335 ------- 8.0 13.8 35.1 12.9 DONE 03:44 35857 10.0 flat Segue 03:46 35858 2.0 arc 04:07 35859 1000.1 target 04:29 35860 1200.1 target 04:57 35861 1500.1 target ----- sequence 35862, plate 2340 ------- 11.5 9.4 13.7 10.8 Continue 05:09 35862 10.0 flat Seguefaint 05:12 35863 2.0 arc 05:36 35864 1200.1 target 05:58 35865 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35866, plate 2075 ------- 77.9 35.4 109.9 39.5 Continue 06:19 35866 10.0 flat Seguefaint 06:21 35867 2.0 arc 06:45 35868 1200.1 target 07:12 35869 1500.1 target 07:40 35870 1500.1 target 08:09 35871 1500.1 target 08:42 35872 1800.1 target 09:15 35873 1800.1 target 09:47 35874 1800.1 target 09:51 35875 10.0 flat 09:53 35876 2.0 arc 10:35 35877 1800.2 target ----- sequence 35878, plate 2293 ------- 23.8 17.0 20.1 16.1 DONE 10:52 35878 10.0 flat chunk 10:54 35879 2.0 arc 11:13 35880 900.1 target 11:36 35881 1200.1 target 11:59 35882 1200.1 target 12:21 35883 1200.1 target 12:44 35884 1200.1 target 12:46 35885 10.0 flat 12:49 35886 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:22Z 2 1500 18.72 -0.0008 55.81 0.0027 195.57 0.0088 0.999900 02:37Z 8 2334 42.83 0.0008 55.07 0.0040 214.94 -0.0025 1.000150 03:44Z 7 2335 7.36 -0.0005 62.52 0.0026 186.12 -0.0050 1.000150 05:20Z 1 2340 -39.99 0.0010 56.49 0.0031 147.03 -0.0124 1.000150 06:17Z 6 2075 89.58 0.0022 60.77 0.0053 252.14 -0.0122 1.000190 10:57Z 5 2293 -47.30 -0.0026 76.62 0.0025 137.65 0.0053 1.000190 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:23Z 2 1500 0.99990 988 2081 100 19 55.8 5.7 13 283 -- 1.1 02:37Z 8 2334 1.00015 -1481 -60 0 43 55.1 6.3 13 258 -- 1.3 03:44Z 7 2335 1.00015 -1481 -80 0 7 62.5 5.0 9 270 -- 1.4 05:21Z 1 2340 1.00015 -1481 -14 50 -40 56.4 4.4 16 269 -- 1.4 06:23Z 6 2075 1.00019 -1876 -380 25 89 62.0 4.6 12 267 -- 1.3 10:02Z 6 2075 1.00019 -1876 -397 25 -82 69.7 4.1 18 286 -- 1.2 10:57Z 5 2293 1.00019 -1876 -406 25 -47 76.6 4.0 16 274 -- 1.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:22Z 43 11 6 308 (NW) 494 - clear 22:52Z 42 11 7 298 (WNW) 482 - 23:22Z 41 11 6 322 (NW) 332 - 23:52Z 41 10 10 311 (NW) 249 - 00:22Z 42 9 7 315 (NW) 65 - 00:53Z 42 6 8 279 (W) 96 - 01:23Z 42 6 12 282 (WNW) 78 - 01:54Z 43 2 13 287 (WNW) 100 - 02:25Z 43 2 13 283 (WNW) 107 - 02:56Z 42 2 10 270 (W) 126 - 03:26Z 41 4 8 266 (W) 266 - light cirruses 03:57Z 40 6 10 302 (WNW) 244 - cirruses 04:27Z 39 7 12 272 (W) 353 - 04:58Z 39 9 11 270 (W) 397 - 05:28Z 40 9 16 271 (W) 401 - 05:59Z 40 11 20 279 (W) 388 - 06:29Z 39 13 22 285 (WNW) 353 - 07:02Z 39 14 19 280 (W) 325 - 07:33Z 39 16 11 300 (WNW) 348 - 08:03Z 39 18 19 302 (WNW) 403 - 08:34Z 38 18 14 283 (WNW) 469 - 09:05Z 39 19 18 291 (WNW) 569 - 09:36Z 39 19 17 288 (WNW) 552 - 10:06Z 39 19 15 270 (W) 548 - 10:37Z 39 18 19 273 (W) 597 - 11:38Z 38 18 7 262 (W) 627 - 12:09Z 38 19 18 293 (WNW) 692 - 12:40Z 38 18 17 288 (WNW) 711 - 13:10Z 37 19 15 310 (NW) 653 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:40Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:15Z Enclosure off. 13:05Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
