APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday January 30, 2006 (MJD 53766) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: K. Pan Night: S. Snedden, J. Barentine Support: Craig Loomis (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A long, productive night of spectroscopy (while we waited out the clouds) and imaging. We finished one seguefaint plate (2417) and obtained about half the total required signal on a second (2398). In imaging we observed: SEGUE Stripe 1356 from +51 <= Mu <= +94.5 Legacy Stripe 17N from -67 <= Lambda <= -21.5 SEGUE Stripe 1600 from +169.5 <= Mu <= +201.5 under photometric conditions, although seeing was sometimes on the hairy edge of acceptability. Highlight of the evening: The Sombrero Galaxy (M104) is in imaging run 6005, dewar 6, starting in the r chip on the boundary between frames 85 and 86. We stopped counting its globular clusters somewhere in the dozens... DIMM performed like a champ all night. Look for it to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Telescope In A Supporting Role later this morning. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectrograph focus checked and no change made. The best focus temp is around 2-3 C. As usual, details in problem section. 23:20Z Fans on, louvers and east door open, west door cracked. Night: ------ During twilight we did some troubleshooting of last night's grabInst/port problem with Craig, which included taking a series of cals in bright twilight (frames 36907-36914, all declared 'bad' in IDL). Had an error too large to correct on the rotator during the test slew in twilight. Forced the fiducial in the MCP. 01:50Z Cart 8 Plate 2417 (tile 8167, seguefaint134) There is already a total low (S/N)^2 of 49.3 on this plate from last night, requiring a trivial amount of exposure time to complete. GSOGTF, almost perfectly centered in the fibers with last night's offsets still sticky. Finished this plate quite easily in one exposure of 900 s. During the cartridge change the zodiacal light was very bright in the west. Also around this time we had a problem entering the plate database information on plate-mapper. See Problems section. 02:20Z Cart 1 Plate 2398 (tile 8148, seguefaint134) No GSOGTF, but found an fk5InFiber number 10 with total offsets of A=+8, D=+10. Seeing has become just a touch variable, now more than 0.5 arcsec FWHM larger than on the previous plate, when most guide fibers gave less than one arcsec. Did 3 x 900 s exposures on this plate as we watched the sky gradually clear and the seeing settle down. 03:40Z Switched to imaging. We followed Eric's instructions from last Saturday night regarding a file to source before issuing a goDrift in IOP to prevent a recurrence of the the problem that night. Worked as advertised. 03:53Z Run 6003 (SEGUE Stripe 1356, startMu=+51) Skippy was happy from the start of this run although focusLoop took a while to catch up, finally converging at Frame 21 (Mu=+52.5). The ramp began at the same time, and science at Frame 38 (Mu=+55). Science ended at Frame 285, Mu=+92, and we ramped down to Frame 302, Mu=+94.5 07:00Z Run 6004 (Stripe 17 N, startLambda=-67) Skippy was happy and we were in focus from the start of this scan. We ramped up from Frame 19 (Lambda=-65.5) to begin science at Frame 35 (Lambda=-63). Science ended at Frame 296 (Lambda=-24) and we ramped down to Frame 312 (Lambda=-21.5). Conditions are still favorable for imaging, although seeing is varying sharply on pretty short time scales. seeingRun called the entirety of the last scan "good", so we continue on. 10:10Z Run 6005 (SEGUE Stripe 1600, startMu=+167) The goDrift command issued from Steph's IOP session inexplicably timed out. It complained that the track command hadn't finished, but all indications (e.g., tccMon) suggested it was fine. Dewar 6, Frames 85/6: The Sombrero Galaxy (M104)! The ramp started at Frame 19 (Mu=+169.5) and science at Frame 36 (Mu=+172) Seeing was again on a steep rollercoaster but the excursions it took above 1.5 arcsec were each sufficiently brief and spiky (temporally speaking) that seeingRun called all but the first forty frames of the run good. Science ended at Frame 217 (Mu=+199), and we ramped down to Frame 234 (Mu=+201.5). (Watcher errors from the setup on this scan are in the Problems section.) 12:20Z Run 6006 (On-telescope bias in very early twilight, FF petals closed) We put the baby to bed at 12:55Z. endNight danced a jig, particularly because it was run flawlessly from Steph's account on host2. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame But Steph prefers not to make any change since the spectrogaph was happy through whole last night which had very similar conditions with tonight, presumablly. So no change is made. Plate Database Error -------------------- Tonight when entering the database information for Plate 2417 (entering one exposure and declaring the plate done), we encountered an error in which the database accepted the declaration but the actual web page did not reflect this. Entering exposures often resulted in an error message. By the time we thought to copy the error message, we could no longer reproduce the error. This also occured last Saturday night (MJD53764), and in both occasions from our laptops running Safari under Mac OS X. We *think* this may have been just user error (trying to update the database before logging into the plate-mapper web page, but just for the record...) goDrift Becomes Flummoxed; Times Out ------------------------------------ During the setup for imaging Run 1600, goDrift timed out, apparently thinking a slew was still in progress even though we're sure the slew from the gotoField was finished. Pertinent watcher errors: Text="Could not queue a write to user:message output dies": (2006-01-31 10:10:06Z) Facil="SYSTEM":VMSMsg:"DEVOFFLINE" (2006-01-31 10:10:06Z) Facil="SYSTEM":VMSMsg:"HANGUP" (2006-01-31 10:10:06Z) Text="Write to user failed:output terminates to user7": (2006-01-31 10:10:06Z) We also note this error *during* the slew on the gotoField: tracking (Excessive Az Tracking Error:: 2006-01-31 10:06:09Z) And last but not least, it appears we neither missed a fiducial crossing nor were there errors too large to correct.
