APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday March 20, 2006 (MJD 53815) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: John Barentine Night: Jurek Krzesinski Kaike Pan weather improver: Steve Kent just arrived on the mountain and we opened the dome!!! (he says that he had to come up here, because the weather left by Jim was not so good). visitors: Craig Loomis ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spectroscopy night. done plates: 2427, 2430,2224, 2032 and partial signal obtained on 2218 and 1843. We lost 90 minutes tonight due to some problems (mainly az aborts, see the log). Problems: --------- - ccd 15 and 55 voltage vt+ vs+ glitches still occur (third day in a row). Watcher does not show any error messages, just red buttons. It looks like both vt and vs voltages are at the tolerance level of 7.05V and glitches are at 7.07V, while the nominal voltage should be at 6.95V (according to the watcher and 6.99 when we run vcheck). Connie knows about the situation. - watcher: still problems with watcher showing for one observer errors, while for the other one it's happy and green. - Looks like mirror temperature sensors are not working properly (we see constant values all the time, while the ambient temperature is changing and focus too). - LogTool: when focus and offset buttons are pressed we see words "disconnected" (in the focus section) and "imager" (in offset section) instead of plate numbers. - Azimuth aborts: one can be blamed on ice, but the next onces might not (see the log). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- Storm total was about five inches of snow; sky was clearing during the afternoon but winds and dust remained high. No trouble to report with checkout. Spectrograph focus has been set for -3 deg C. Numbers are in the Problems section. night: ------ 01:58Z cart 4 plt 2427 on the telescope. SOGTF. Plate done. 02:21Z There are vt+ vs+ voltage glitches again on ccd 15 and 55. 03:48Z cart 1 plt 2430. SOGTF. Calibration done after the first exposure (we forgot what is the proper order :), but redone reduction and all was fine). Flat and arc showed in yellow in sos. The ambient temperature now is -4C, and spectrographs were focused for the temperature -3C. 03:50Z For some reason the telescope stopped tracking in the middle of scale change (tccmon showed axisInit slewType). We went to field again and resumed setting on stars. 04:20Z Telescope aborted in az axis. After some investigation we think it was caused by a piece of ice which got frozen to the floor and got under metal bouncers mounted on the dog house to stop the telescope when something happens to be on its way. Then we couldn't find guide stars for a while, and when we did the offsets were very different from where they were before the telescope aborted (see offsets). We lost 25 minutes due to the problem. Plate done. 05:36Z cart 3 plt 2224. SOGTF. Flat and arc showed in yellow in sos, and the ambient temperature is -3.5C. Plate done. 07:30Z cart 5 plt 2218. 07:30Z Another azimuth abort. This time we cannot blame the ice. Jurek went to the telescope and did something to it ...but he'll tell only French what he's done, and we were able to clear Az abort then went to the field. The only drawback was, we found fk5 star offsetted -17" in DEC. We lost 15 minutes. Since all flats and arcs (but plt 2427) are in yellow, we decided to correct spectrograph focus. Did Hartman exposures and had to piston: sp1> -3800 sp2> -5000 Lost 30 minutes :(. But flats and arcs look much better now :). Clouds and moonlight distroyed our first exposure. Maybe the next one will be better? Some useful signal collected, but plate not done. 09:35Z Cart 8 plt 2032. Telescope aborted in az again, this time Jurek's trick did not work. The telescope did not move from 121 to 125 (or requested by gotofield 240) but we were able to move it in oposite direction. Discovering that we slewed it to 80 and then could move it to 240. Is there something under the dog house at 121 which stops the telescope when we tried to slew it? more ICE? We heard squicky sounds when the dog house was passing that position, but nothing obvious. Then we couldn't find any stars even with the spiral pattern. Anoyingly enough, the last problem was connected to too large to correct az and alt error. We fiducialized the az axis (the alt axis recovered on the next fiducial) and found stars. 35 minutes lost due to the problem. Plate done. On the slew to instChange position, the telescope aborted in Az again just before reaching az= 121. Fortunately this time a few axis init solved the problem. Note that the telescope was moving clockwise (in the direction which was working before, so no clue what stops it around 121). 11:30Z cart 9 plt 1843. SOGTF. We've got one good exposure on that plate. endNight finished ok. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6058 21:55Z 22:24Z 100 O -143.75 -136.43 63 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 38070, plate -9999 ------- 21:51 38070 0.0 bias 21:55 38071 0.0 bias ----- sequence 38072, plate 2427 ------- 22:11 38072 2.1 arc 22:13 38073 2.1 arc 22:16 38074 10.0 flat 22:19 38075 2.0 arc 22:26 38076 2.1 arc 22:28 38077 2.1 arc ----- sequence 38079, plate 2427 ------- 02:11 38080 10.0 flat 02:13 38081 2.0 arc 02:37 38082 900.1 target 03:00 38083 1200.1 target 03:25 38084 1200.1 target 03:40 38085 700.1 target ----- sequence 38086, plate 2430 ------- 04:13 38086 900.1 target 04:17 38087 10.0 flat 04:19 38088 2.0 arc 05:01 38089 900.2 target 05:28 38090 1500.1 target ----- sequence 38091, plate 2224 ------- 05:43 38091 10.0 flat 05:45 38092 2.0 arc 06:04 38093 900.2 target 06:32 38094 1500.1 target 06:59 38095 1500.1 target 07:17 38096 900.2 target 07:20 38097 10.0 flat 07:22 38098 2.0 arc ----- sequence 38099, plate 2218 ------- 07:53 38099 10.0 flat 07:55 38100 2.0 arc 07:59 38101 2.2 arc 08:01 38102 2.2 arc 08:18 38103 10.0 flat 08:21 38104 2.0 arc 08:40 38105 900.1 target 09:02 38106 1200.1 target 09:25 38107 1200.2 target ----- sequence 38108, plate 2032 ------- 10:13 38108 10.0 flat 10:15 38109 2.0 arc 10:39 38110 1200.1 target 10:57 38111 900.2 target 11:20 38112 1200.1 target ----- sequence 38113, plate 1843 ------- 11:37 38113 10.0 flat 11:39 38114 2.0 arc 11:59 38115 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:23Z 2427 51.38 0.0006 63.62 0.0020 222.68 0.0113 1.000090 04:04Z 2430 -2.40 0.0015 70.22 0.0016 177.86 0.0125 1.000010 04:50Z 2430 -32.58 0.0003 67.24 -0.0035 152.23 0.0033 0.999990 after az aborted 05:52Z 2223 83.92 0.0025 74.37 -0.0035 254.46 0.0335 0.999910 08:29Z 2218 -83.51 0.0155 65.30 -0.0040 110.39 -0.0138 0.999890 10:25Z 2032 250.44 -0.0012 64.54 -0.0004 88.33 -0.0071 0.999990 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:23Z 2427 1.00009 -889 859 450 51 63.6 -3.2 16 263 gdr 1.3 04:04Z 2430 1.00003 -296 1136 250 -2 70.2 -4.3 12 269 gdr 1.2 05:52Z 2223 0.99991 889 2010 150 84 74.4 -3.4 10 325 1.5 08:29Z 2218 0.99989 1086 2209 170 -83 65.3 -3.8 4 346 1.1 10:25Z 2032 0.99999 99 1373 150 250 64.5 -4.8 5 246 1.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:34Z 28 14 18 269 (W) 1583 - 21:07Z 26 10 20 267 (W) 793 - 21:39Z 27 9 23 297 (WNW) 1053 - 22:10Z 29 10 22 290 (WNW) 2023 - 22:40Z 30 11 29 277 (W) 13460 - 23:11Z 32 11 20 264 (W) 863 - 23:41Z 30 10 25 278 (W) 954 - 00:56Z 29 10 14 267 (W) 729 - 01:26Z 27 12 17 271 (W) 674 - 02:00Z 27 11 16 267 (W) 661 - 02:30Z 26 12 22 290 (WNW) 762 - 03:00Z 25 13 15 271 (W) 787 - 03:32Z 24 13 20 284 (WNW) 778 - 04:04Z 24 13 12 269 (W) 826 - 04:34Z 23 13 8 296 (WNW) 868 - 05:05Z 23 13 4 275 (W) 934 - 05:36Z 25 10 9 294 (WNW) 502 - 06:06Z 25 10 8 321 (NW) 334 - 06:37Z 25 10 1 358 (NNW) 371 - 07:09Z 25 10 0 354 (NNW) 290 - 07:41Z 25 10 11 356 (NNW) 327 - 08:12Z 24 10 5 343 (NNW) 283 - 08:42Z 25 10 5 279 (W) 309 - 09:14Z 25 10 1 244 (WSW) 333 - 09:45Z 24 10 2 190 (S) 403 - 10:16Z 22 10 2 230 (SW) 445 - 10:46Z 22 10 3 236 (SW) 510 - 11:17Z 22 10 6 221 (SW) 540 - 11:48Z 21 10 7 203 (SSW) 552 - 12:19Z 23 11 10 184 (S) 603 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z Fans on. 01:30Z Telescope opened, spectro dewars refilled. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v4_19_0 Watcher: v2_31_0 MCP: v6_1_3 TPM: tpm_v3_3_0 AstroDa: v15_11 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: SoS: v5_1_0 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A -5.8520 -5.8440 Axial B -5.6660 -5.6770 Axial C 0.9350 0.9420 Trans D -10.0020 -9.9940 Lateral E 10.3759 10.3759 Lateral F 11.9507 11.9380 GALILS Commanded: 4700. -2450. 3000. -7800. 3300. 3000.
