APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday April 19, 2006 (MJD 53845) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Days: Howard Brewington Observers: Kaike Pan and Steph Snedden Visitors: French Leger Victor Leger (http://victorleger.com - a free plug, Victor) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown and Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 1. Pointing model taken and implemented. Spectroscopy after that. Two legacy plates declared done (1994, 2233). One SEGUE special plate may be done (pending feedback). 2. Integrated dust in "dust-hours" estimated to be 36,000 before we closed. 3. We need the mirror to be CO2 cleaned today. Thanks. 4. Brian and/or Connie, we think we finished plate 2475 tonight. We need feedback on this plate and 2476 ASAP, since we need their cartridges. Thanks. 5. Declared the following software current: IOP v4_21_0 astroda v15_11_1 Watcher v2_34_0 MCP v6_3_1 ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- No problems were found during the afternoon checkout except for the noise bars in the astro/photo monitors. Spectro focus/collimation was not checked because engCam is still mounted. 01:05Z Door and louvers opened, fans on (Dust=3.2k). Night: ----------- 01:31Z Enclosure off (dust=3.4k) Per the discussion at this afternoon's phone con, we will track the integrated dust accumulation through the night, and only close when and if we reach one of the integrated levels in Dan's proposed limits. We will start with the needed pointing model, though it's psychologically hard to not do science right away. The initial check of collimation with the engineering camera looked pretty good, even though we were not quite equilibrated. We are optimistic that collimation will need no tweaking. After 35 points, Kaike's TCC window that was running pterr froze. We had to start a new pterr session that ran on the an edited grid file containing the remaining 37 points. The output files were then concatenated so that tpoint could run on the full data set. The pointing model results were similar to, but slightly better than last month's. The new terms and RMS error follow: inmod tdat:telmod SYS$SYSDEVICE:[TCC.PTERR]PTERR_20060319.DAT;1 T 72 2.0307 IE -162.2746 IA -146.9797 PZZ1 -124.8521 AN +9.4249 AW -10.6600 CA +37.7700 HWCA2 -0.1952 HWSA2 -0.7897 HNCA1 -0.3510 HNSA1 -0.7194 ACEC +2.8420 ACES -3.0438 TX -8.7845 END * getdat PTERR_20060420.DAT;4 Read 72 data points * use * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE +16.579 -145.70 0.961 2 IA +2.500 -144.48 1.073 3 PZZ1 +2.887 -121.96 3.156 4 AN -4.654 +4.77 0.340 5 AW +6.076 -4.58 0.335 6 CA +0.787 +38.56 0.797 7 HWCA2 -0.330 -0.53 0.443 8 HWSA2 +0.269 -0.52 0.450 9 HNCA1 +0.349 +0.00 0.509 10 HNSA1 -0.059 -0.78 0.508 11 ACEC -1.778 +1.06 0.615 12 ACES +1.770 -1.27 0.621 13 TX +0.485 -8.30 1.523 Sky RMS = 1.87 Popn SD = 2.07 In the meantime, the seeing started to degrade, so that shot our hopes of doing imager tests tonight. ---------- 06:13Z - We switched to spectroscopy to test our pointing model. Cartridge 7, plate 2233 Legacy chunk 119 GSOGTF. Looks like the pointing model is good. Seeing was quite variable. Declared the plate done in three exposures totaling 2300 s. On slewing to inst change, the telescope stopped in mid-slew and the telrun session at the telescope laptop spewed many lines of test including the "mailbox full" error. A new telrun session was started at the laptop, and the telescope was sent to inst change. Only two minutes were lost to the problem. Dust had bounced around 3500 particles/0.1 ft**3 (+/- 250 part/0.1 ft**3) since we opened. When we looked at the conditions before sunset, the dust looked well mixed, so we didn't expect sudden spikes unless the wind speed picked up and/or changed direction. 07:34Z - Cartridge 1, plate 1994 - Legacy chunk 100 Only one guide star on the edge of the fiber. Seeing remained variable. Declared the plate done with a total exposure time of 4200 s. Dust averaging 4000 particles/0.1 ft**3 now. Humidity starting to creep over 30 percent. 09:14Z - Cartridge 2, plate 2475 - Special segcluster plate - M3 Needed an FK5 to find the field. This plate has special observing instructions of five exposures of three minutes each. Given the Moon and variable seeing, we opted to give it *eight* exposures of three minutes each. We need feedback as to whether this plate can be unplugged. 09:51Z: We estimate that we have reached our dust accumulation limit, since the humidity went higher than 30%. 10:14Z: We closed. endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6097 23:25Z 23:46Z 100 O -91.58 -86.41 48 ignore 6098 01:56Z 02:04Z 100 O -53.81 -51.78 28 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 38661, plate -9999 ------- 23:28 38661 0.0 bias 00:40 38662 0.0 bias 00:44 38663 0.0 bias 01:14 38664 0.0 bias ----- sequence 38665, plate 2233 ------- 06:29 38665 10.0 flat 06:32 38666 2.0 arc 06:50 38667 900.1 target 07:04 38668 700.1 target 07:18 38669 700.1 target ----- sequence 38670, plate 1994 ------- 07:38 38670 10.0 flat 07:40 38671 2.0 arc 07:59 38672 900.1 target 08:17 38673 900.1 target 08:34 38674 900.1 target 09:02 38675 1500.1 target ----- sequence 38676, plate 2475 ------- segueSpecial 09:24 38676 10.0 flat 09:27 38677 2.0 arc 09:33 38678 180.1 target 09:39 38679 180.1 target 09:45 38680 180.1 target 09:50 38681 180.2 target 09:56 38682 180.1 target 10:01 38683 180.1 target 10:07 38684 180.2 target 10:13 38685 180.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:35Z 7 2233 -72.00 -0.0038 75.90 0.0004 115.53 0.0099 1.000060 07:47Z 1 1994 265.93 -0.0022 68.34 0.0029 99.65 -0.0037 1.000190 09:30Z 2 2475 266.68 -0.0035 55.80 0.0007 107.35 0.0044 1.000180 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:16Z engcam 1.00000 0 -2753 0 121 30.1 11.8 22 226 06:35Z 7 2233 1.00006 -593 582 -50 -72 75.9 8.9 9 198 - 1.3 07:47Z 1 1994 1.00019 -1876 -469 -50 266 68.3 6.9 16 188 - 1.8 09:30Z 2 2475 1.00018 -1778 -248 60 267 55.8 6.3 17 153 - 2.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:22Z 59 15 6 183 (S) 3111 - clear 23:52Z 59 14 10 193 (SSW) 3258 - ' 00:24Z 56 13 16 256 (WSW) 3498 - ' 00:54Z 55 11 20 248 (WSW) 3139 - ' 01:25Z 52 8 19 233 (SW) 4067 - ' 01:56Z 50 7 10 218 (SW) 3509 - ' 02:28Z 50 7 11 220 (SW) 3487 - ' 02:58Z 50 6 12 223 (SW) 3525 - ' 03:29Z 50 7 9 192 (SSW) 3558 - ' 04:01Z 50 7 8 220 (SW) 3510 - ' 04:32Z 47 10 2 113 (ESE) 3261 - ' 05:02Z 47 8 5 181 (S) 3404 - ' 05:33Z 48 7 5 202 (SSW) 3496 - ' 06:03Z 47 8 6 185 (S) 3464 - ' 06:33Z 47 8 5 176 (S) 3505 - ' 07:05Z 45 8 8 188 (S) 3492 - ' 07:35Z 44 10 9 182 (S) 3543 - ' 08:06Z 46 11 15 174 (S) 3967 - ' 08:37Z 46 13 20 199 (SSW) 4123 - ' 09:09Z 44 15 18 177 (S) 3998 - ' 09:40Z 43 17 13 155 (SSE) 3946 - ' 10:10Z 43 15 11 156 (SSE) 3869 - ' 10:41Z 42 14 6 176 (S) 3868 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:05Z Door and louvers opened, fans on. 01:30Z Enclosure off (dust=3.4k) 10:27Z Closed enclosure.
