APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday April 27, 2006 (MJD 53853) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Days: Howard Brewington Night: Viktor Malanushenko Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We opened around 08:00Z after waiting for the dust to settle to a reasonable value. We got data on two plates (2116, 1729) in poor seeing, but didn't finish either. A conversation with French led us to temporarily revert to the most conservative dust limits ( <20k per night) for the next few nights. This is because the CO2 for mirror cleaning ran out yesterday and new supplies won't arrive until Monday. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- No problems found during the afternoon checkout. Spectro focus was checked and adjusted to ~+9-degrees C; see Problems Section for the focus numbers. I cleared some space on the host2 with the byebye script. In did not ventilate the 2.5m enclosure because of dust. At 01:40Z = 15k. Night: ---------- 01:50Z Dust counts at sunset are over 15000. We also have a lot of cloud and wind speeds at or over the limit. 05:50Z Dust remains between 8000 and 14000. The valley still looks quite murky. A fair amount of distant lightning can be seen in the east. The dry line is about 50 or so miles to our east. To illustrate how dramatic the difference is, the dewpoint in Artesia, only 70 miles east, is 30 C higher than here! To quote Maxwell Smart, "Missed it by that much". 07:10Z Dust has dropped from 12000 to 3000 in the last half hour. Opened enclosure doors and started ventilation. If the dust doesn't spike back up in the next half hour we will open. 07:50Z Opening, dust has stayed below 3400 for the last 40 minutes. 08:12Z Cartridge 3 2116 Survey 16.4 11.3 15.2 11.0 Found guide stars with a couple good guesses on offsets. Seeing is pretty dismal at around 2.5 arcseconds. 08:28Z preCalib 08:33Z First science 38903 09:20Z Seeing is now even worse, going well over 3 arcseconds at times. Got three exposures before it expired. 09:55Z instChange 10:01Z Cartridge 9 1729 Survey 6.6 4.8 5.9 8.3 Guide stars on slew. 10:05Z preCalib 10:11Z First science 38910 10:20Z A few small clouds pass overhead. 10:27Z Guider stopped being able to write to /data/spectro/guider. The guider Mac was restarted and was then able to write. Exposure 38910 bad from low (S/N)^2, due to a combination of bad seeing and bad (no) guiding in the last few minutes of the exposure. 10:50Z Of course, now that it is twilight, the seeing improves to 1.8 arcseconds. At least this last exposure should have enough signal to count. 11:10Z Closing. 11:25Z endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6114 23:24Z 23:48Z 100 O -84.06 -78.02 54 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 38892, plate -9999 ------- 23:25 38892 0.0 bias ----- sequence 38893, plate 2077 ------- 23:46 38893 10.0 flat 23:48 38894 2.0 arc 23:59 38895 2.1 arc 00:02 38896 2.1 arc 00:17 38897 2.2 arc 00:20 38898 2.1 arc ----- sequence 38899, plate -9999 ------- 00:56 38899 0.0 bias 01:04 38900 0.0 bias ----- sequence 38900, plate 2116 ------- 16.4 11.3 15.2 11.0 08:30 38901 10.0 flat 08:32 38902 2.0 arc 08:55 38903 1200.1 target 09:23 38904 1500.1 target 09:49 38905 1400.1 target 09:52 38906 10.0 flat 09:54 38907 2.0 arc ----- sequence 38908, plate 1729 ------- 6.6 4.8 5.9 8.3 10:06 38908 10.0 flat 10:09 38909 2.0 arc 10:32 38910 1200.1 target 11:04 38911 1500.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:28Z 3 2116 -91.30 0.0003 65.47 0.0004 103.75 0.0080 1.000200 10:14Z 9 1729 -44.72 -0.0019 56.58 -0.0016 143.27 -0.0241 1.000200 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:28Z 3 2116 1.00020 -1975 -445 50 -91 65.5 4.9 9 266 - 2.5 10:14Z 9 1729 1.00020 -1975 -349 125 -45 56.6 3.5 13 263 - 2.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:06Z 65 21 24 203 (SSW) 3057 - Partly Cloudy 22:38Z 65 21 17 219 (SW) 2425 - Partly Cloudy 23:08Z 61 18 21 186 (S) 1720 - Partly Cloudy 23:38Z 60 16 23 220 (SW) 9649 - Partly Cloudy 00:08Z 61 16 30 195 (SSW) 7818 - Partly Cloudy 00:38Z 58 14 25 216 (SW) 9816 - Partly Cloudy 01:09Z 57 14 21 212 (SSW) 10356 - Partly Cloudy 01:41Z 56 13 19 220 (SW) 14958 - Partly Cloudy 01:50Z 56 13 24 212 (SSW) 13091 - Partly Cloudy 02:22Z 53 10 21 237 (WSW) 8368 - Mostly Clear 02:55Z 51 7 11 268 (W) 17828 - Partly Cloudy 03:27Z 49 5 7 276 (W) 15727 - Partly Cloudy 03:59Z 48 4 13 299 (WNW) 11290 - Mostly Clear 04:31Z 46 2 8 270 (W) 7813 - Mostly Clear 05:03Z 45 2 10 291 (WNW) 8553 - Mostly Clear 05:36Z 44 2 8 340 (NNW) 11148 - Mostly Clear 06:08Z 43 2 9 316 (NW) 9071 - Clear 06:40Z 42 2 8 345 (NNW) 13021 - Clear 07:12Z 42 3 10 308 (NW) 3037 - Clear 07:44Z 41 4 8 294 (WNW) 2886 1.4k Clear 08:17Z 40 5 6 328 (NNW) 2585 2.7k Clear 08:49Z 40 5 9 272 (W) 2496 4.0k Clear 09:21Z 40 6 16 264 (W) 2729 5.3k Clear 09:53Z 39 7 11 260 (W) 2758 6.7k Clear 10:25Z 37 8 5 257 (WSW) 2536 8.0k Mostly Clear 10:57Z 38 10 9 247 (WSW) 2325 9.2k Clear 11:30Z 38 10 11 232 (SW) 2355 9.3k Clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 07:10Z Doors Open, Fans On, Louvers Open 07:50Z Enclousure Open 11:15Z Enclosure Closed, Louvers Closed, Fans Off.
