APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday May 10, 2006 (MJD 53866) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Observer: Howard Brewington ET crew: Jian Ge, Scott Fleming Phone support: Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The first part of the night was great, and we finished three ET plates, viz., 8024, 8025, and 8026. Unfortunately, the seeing deteriorated to ~6" as we started cart 06, plate 8021, at 06:06Z. So, we closed at 07:00Z to wait for better conditions. Then at 09:20Z, humidity became a problem, which kept us closed for the rest of the night. I left the heater on in the lower enclosure. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- I did a spectro bias during setup and noticed that the spectro display (monitor) on the right in the control room looked a little dark and weak. I did, however, check some of the bias images with saoDisplay to make sure that they were okay. The images looked good. And, SOS had no problem with the images either. The servers were dead and had to be restarted. At first, my TCC session would not accept any commands such as: show obj, set focus, or set scale. I kept trying, and after a few minutes, all was normal again. While the commands were not being accepted, the TCC text said that the commands had been "recorded but not applied." No other problems were found during the afternoon checkout. Night: ------------ 02:29Z Cart 08, Plate 8024. Guide stars on goToField with a previous night's offsets, i.e., A=-4 and D=+4. Seeing = 1" and dust = 3.8K at the start of this 50-minute exposure. Humidity = 27%. 03:43Z Cart 09, Plate 8025. We lost a few minutes of sky time on this plate because we needed to clean the ends of the ET fibers. Found field via an Fk5 star. Seeing = 1.1" and dust = 3.8K at the start of this 50-minute exposure. Humidity is 28.9%. 04:48Z Cart 04, Plate 8026. Found the field with cleared offsets and with previous night's offsets applied, i.e., A=-13 and D=-5. Seeing = 1.5" and dust= 3.6K at the start of this 50-minute exposure. Humidity is climbing alittle and is now at 30.5%. 05:53Z Cart 06, Plate 8021. Found field with offsets of A=-13 and D=+3. Seeing = 1.3" and dust = 4.5K at the start of this 50-minute exposure. Humidity =25.7%. 06:06Z During Cart 06, the seeing deteriorated to ~3.5" and dust is now at about 2.5K. And, unfortunately, the humidity is on the move and is up to ~60%. There is much colder air moving in from the northeast, and that reality is the cause of these very poor conditions. The data for this observation will most likely be of a much lower quality since the guide stars were not visible for most of this exposure. 07:00Z Because of very poor seeing (~4"), needless dust accumulation, and higher humidity (>70%), we decided to close and wait for better conditions. To monitor the seeing, we started-up the DIMM. I noticed that someone had left the DIMM's pointer turned on during the last darkrun, and its battery was dead. So, I replaced the battery and realigned the finder. 07:10Z I turned on the heater in the lower enclosure. 08:02Z DIMM measured seeing at ~6" with wind now out of the east. The humidity has climbed to 77%, and the dust = about 2K. 08:50Z Seeing ~6", humidity at 84%, dewpoint 2.4, wind 35.9, and dust 2K. 09:22Z I put the DIMM away as the humidity went to 89% and dewpoint-diff fell below 2 degrees. The DIMM was still reporting the seeing at about 6" just before I closed its cover. Misc Watcher messages are posted in the problem section. We have been getting lots of alt windscreen touches. endNight finished and was happy. 10:30Z When we went to bed, the humidity was at 97% ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 39147, plate -9999 ------- 23:47 39147 0.0 bias 23:50 39148 0.0 bias ----- sequence 39149, plate 8028 ------- 23:58 39149 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:07Z 59 18 8 292 (WNW) 4591 - 22:45Z 59 19 2 312 (NW) 4496 - 23:45Z 62 18 13 282 (WNW) 4399 - 00:17Z 57 18 0 154 (SSE) 4377 - 00:53Z 57 18 0 23 (NNE) 4204 - 01:26Z 56 18 7 343 (NNW) 4040 - 01:58Z 54 18 2 329 (NNW) 3994 - 02:28Z 54 20 8 335 (NNW) 3679 - 02:58Z 54 21 2 287 (WNW) 3743 - 03:30Z 54 21 1 234 (SW) 4143 - 04:01Z 52 20 6 260 (W) 4007 - 04:34Z 51 21 2 186 (S) 3927 - 05:06Z 51 21 6 192 (SSW) 3905 - 05:39Z 53 19 6 180 (S) 4356 - 06:09Z 46 32 12 64 (ENE) 2550 - 06:40Z 44 33 12 69 (ENE) 2473 - 07:10Z 42 33 23 71 (ENE) 2500 - 07:40Z 40 32 22 70 (ENE) 2134 - 08:10Z 37 31 21 71 (ENE) 2052 - 08:43Z 35 31 24 71 (ENE) 1897 - 09:15Z 34 31 22 71 (ENE) 1671 - 09:47Z 33 31 24 77 (ENE) 1835 - 10:21Z 33 32 27 76 (ENE) 1760 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:45Z Doors and louvers opened, fans on 01:45Z Enclosure off 07:00Z Enclosure on, doors/louvers closed, fans off.
