APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday June 27, 2006 (MJD 53914) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Days: Dan Long Night: Viktor Malanushenko John Barentine Shannon Watters ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- (She Blinded Me With) Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds, high humidity, and light rain. We never opened. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems with the afternoon check. Spectro focus was checked but not changed, best focus about 12 C. See problems section for details. PT dewpoint sensor dewpoint still showing a fairly constant value of zero when the 3.5m value is around 9 C. Temperature value still OK. High humidity again prevented any late day ventilation. Night: ------ Clouds and high humidity persisted after sunset; toward the end of evening twilight the humidity backed off to the mid-70% range. We watched the situation closely in hopes we might at least ventilate while we waited for the cloud situation to improve. At 07:20Z the humidity rose above the closure limit and remained there for the rest of the night. The rain sensor tripped at 07:37Z, at which point we covered the cloud camera. Just before 10:00Z, with ~20 minutes to go before twilight, we decided that this night was over. endNight rejoiced, and I did too. This is your humble correspondent's last missive as an SDSS Observer. There are a few personal comments I'd llike to add here before signing off. Being a part of Sloan has been, truly, a pleasure and a privilege for which I'm grateful. I laughed, I cried, I learned a heck of a lot of astronomy and how to be a professional. It's an experience I'll never forget. And now, a short list of shouts-out to my peeps: To French and his engineering crew, for solving our problems, fixing the stuff we break, and always providing service with a smile, To all the plate Pluggers, present and past, whose tireless fingers kept us in business, To the Observers, the best crew with whom I've ever worked, And to all the various SDSS Folk whom I've met, emailed, or called in the middle of the night (you're too numerous to list individually!), Thank you for giving me this chance. I'll be back online again soon from Deep In Heart Of Texas.
