APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday August 23, 2006 (MJD 53971) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Kaike Pan Night: Dan Long Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Still fighting for pointing model, then Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finally the weather cooperates! Tonight we opened got on the sky!!! Eric's scanStripe change was tested during twilight and a new version of iop will be available tomorrow. The primary collimation was checked with the engineering camera. We started from the mechanical collimation position of all zeros setmir, and found the out of focus images to be very symmetric there. It remains to be seen if this is true off axis as we did not get to put the imager on sky. A pointing model was taken and implemented. Pointing went from 22 arcseconds rms to 2. During the follow up test model the humidity got too high to remain open (actually the secondary cooled too close to the dewpoint). We closed as soon as the short grid finished. We did not reopen. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Eric called here and told us that he will available tonight to test his PR. Engcam is mounted for the pointing model. Night: ------ 01:00Z Fans on doors open 01:30Z Cloud camera showing standard deviation of around 5 when cirrus clouds were clearly visible to the eye in the bright evening sky. They were not visible on the cloud camera 02:00Z Enclosure Open 02:15Z Eric tests his changes to scanStripe and with a few slews declares he has the fix for getting TCC info to resolve stripe ambiguities. 04:20Z All zeros setmir gave a very nice symmetrical donut, so that's what we set the numbers to in default.dat for the on axis collimation. We shall see how much that changes when we check with the imager. Once the imager collimation check is done we should set new nominal MiG values for the log. engcam image numbers for either side of focus at all zeros setmir. 0044 +300 0045 -300 The check of center of rotation of the camera showed it was very close to exact. The fit to the old model was as suspected pretty terrible at 22 arcseconds rms with the error mostly in elevation. When allowed to vary, the parameters for the new model had a 2 arcsecond rms. It was implemented and checked with a small 24 point grid. * getdat [tcc.pterr]pterr_20060824.dat Read 72 data points * use * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE +16.628 -129.07 1.034 2 IA -2.992 -147.47 1.130 3 PZZ1 -10.138 -132.10 3.408 4 AN +0.602 +5.37 0.354 5 AW +1.125 -3.46 0.348 6 CA +4.643 +43.20 0.837 7 HWCA2 +0.233 -0.29 0.458 8 HWSA2 -0.017 -0.54 0.470 9 HNCA1 +0.179 +0.18 0.529 10 HNSA1 +0.254 -0.52 0.528 11 ACEC +0.509 +1.57 0.641 12 ACES +0.302 -0.97 0.649 13 TX +1.691 -6.61 1.638 Sky RMS = 1.95 Popn SD = 2.15 07:00Z During the 24 point model the secondary temperature started getting uncomfortably close to the dewpoint. The dewpoint depression between the ambient air at the telescope and the PT/3.5m dewpoint reading had been hovering around 2 to 3 C for much of the night, and the secondary slowly overcooled to 1 to 1.5 C below ambient. 07:30Z So when the test model finished we put the enclosure back on and turned off the fans. 09:55Z AD1 apparently spontaneously crashed/rebooted, going to the blue screen on its monitor. The Imager was not in use at the time or for many hours prior. 10:00Z The humidity situation did not change for the remainder of the night. 10:30Z endNight and observers rejoiced at finally getting on sky. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 01:50 40469 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:49Z engcam 1.00000 0 -3305 -468 121 56.1 14.0 5 266 - .9 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:59Z 65 52 5 254 (WSW) 642 - Partly Cloudy 00:30Z 64 51 3 259 (W) 670 - Partly Cloudy 01:06Z 62 49 2 258 (WSW) 654 - Mostly Clear 01:37Z 58 51 4 287 (WNW) 711 - Mostly Clear 02:14Z 57 51 5 273 (W) 715 - Mostly Clear 02:45Z 58 50 4 273 (W) 732 - Clear 03:16Z 58 47 5 279 (W) 666 - Clear 03:46Z 58 47 5 275 (W) 741 - Clear 04:19Z 58 49 7 272 (W) 736 - Clear 04:49Z 57 48 4 266 (W) 713 - Mostly Clear 05:19Z 57 48 5 268 (W) 756 - Mostly Clear 05:51Z 56 49 5 260 (W) 801 - Mostly Clear 06:24Z 56 49 5 212 (SSW) 649 - Mostly Clear 06:54Z 55 49 7 233 (SW) 659 - Mostly Clear 07:25Z 57 49 6 245 (WSW) 706 - Clear 07:56Z 57 49 7 256 (WSW) 719 - Clear 08:28Z 56 50 9 261 (W) 868 - Mostly Clear 08:59Z 56 50 9 269 (W) 916 - Clear 09:31Z 56 50 7 268 (W) 923 - Clear 10:17Z 56 50 6 273 (W) 966 - Clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z Fans on, louvers and doors open. 02:00Z Enclosure Open 07:30Z Enclosure Closed, Fans Off Stowed at 30 deg alt, engcam installed.
