APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday August 8, 2007 (MJD 54321) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- dayShift: Howard Brewington Observers: Dmitry Bizyaev Steph Snedden Support: French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Note: tonight's MJD is a straight. More shakedown. Telescope mechanical collimation data were collected and emailed to Russell. Much of the spectro monthly checkout was done, but not all. There is a problem with a collimator mirror actuator on spectrograph 2. We continue to have problems with keeping spectrograph camera 4 cold. We were thinking that it was a bad full sensor, but after tonight we are suspicious that the vacuum is not good in that camera. We also encountered a problem with slewing with the TCC tonight. Every time we tried slewing in altitude via a track command, the telescope would accelerate, get about halfway to the destination, decelerate, then the error would increase until the telescope went out of closed loop. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- afternoon: ----------- In the control room, the monitor for sp2 stopped working. So, Jon replaced it. Thanks Jon! During the imager bias (run #6880), I noticed that photo one (mostly G1) contained a great deal of noise; see frames 32 and 33). Steph suggested that we stop the drift and unlatch the T-bars. After doing so, the noise was gone in run #6881. After 40+ frame with run 6881, I ended the drift, relatched the T-bars, and started a new drift (run #6882). In 6882, the noise in G1 had returned. Steph said that this was an old (known) problem with no solution. Night: ----------- Mechanical collimation of the telescope and spectro monthly checkout were on tap for tonight. The former was done with French. While setting up for the telescope collimation, we realized that sp1 red camera (camera 4) was still not doing complete primary fills. Watching the fill showed that it kept shutting off too soon. French swapped the full sensor with one from spectrograph 2, and we thought that fixed the problem on spectrograph 1. Nope. A few hours later, we had the same problem recur on camera 4. We are back to suspecting a poor vacuum in this camera. The temperature never gets down below about -85C. After playing with full sensors, we moved on to mechanical collimation of the telescope. Russell, here are the setmir numbers for you to fit: piston xtilt ytilt xtran ytran ------ ----- ----- ----- ----- 0 -60 -140 -190 +200 ==> alt = 15 degrees 0 -75 -140 -190 +250 ==> alt = 30 degrees 0 -60 -140 -190 +140 ==> alt = 45 degrees 0 -60 -140 -190 + 40 ==> alt = 60 degrees 0 -60 -140 -190 - 40 ==> alt = 75 degrees Spectro Monthly Checkout: ------------------------ We then mounted cartridge 8 for spectro monthly checkout. Sp2 X direction alignment needed a large adjustment. On the first move of the collimator mirror actuators, we requested a move of A=2000 B=2000 C=-2000 whereupon actuator A promptly went to the negative limit and B and C did not move at all. We gradually backed out of the new extreme tilt with negative mechMoveColl moves on B and C. Then we tried to move all three actuators back toward the starting point (A=0, B=0, C=0) in a positive direction. Every time we got to A approx. = -9500, it would go back to the negative limit. There is a problem with actuator A on spectrograph 2. After trying several times to get sp2's actuator A to move > -9500, we decided to just concentrate on getting spectrograph 1 aligned and collimated. That went without any trouble. Spectrograph 2 will have to be aligned after actuator A is repaired. Spectro biases: 25 biases were taken. We left the telescope at 30 deg. alt with cartridge 8 mounted, but no second corrector. Counterweights are at 225. The autofill is connected, but it won't keep spectro camera 4 cold without intervention. 11:35Z - We did a series of startfillseq commands on sp1 camera 4 to keep it cold until French is up. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v4_37_0 Watcher: v2_36_0 MCP: v6_4_0 TPM: tpm_v3_5_0 AstroDa: v15_13_1 TCC: TCC 2.9.1 2007-06-21 sdssProcedures: v2_35 SoS: v5_1_8 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- ---=== PROBLEMS IN DETAIL ===---
