APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday August 10, 2007 (MJD 54323) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- (Dayshift) Howard Brewington (Observers) Steph Snedden Elena Malanushenko ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- One step forward, and two steps back tonight. We see evidence for a light leak in spectrograph 2. Biases taken with lights on or in bright twilight show elevated counts, especially in the blue camera, and something that looks suspiciously like a light leak can be seen in e.g. frame sdR-b2-00045725.fit. Engineering crew, please have a look. We took some flats and arcs for Connie and Craig while waiting for the telescope to equilibrate. Details below. We managed to go on-sky and completed the optical collimation (yippee). No pointing model because of what looks to be a TCC problem. Russell, please read below. We need to roll back unless the fix is easy. French, please add packrat eviction and cleanup to the shakedown handoff... ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- I performed the home/relax procedure for M1 and M2. Then, I did the 'saveNominalMigValuesForLog' command in an IOP session. During the spectro afternoon checkout, I discovered that FF-lamp #1 was bad. So, Steph and I changed it. The bad FF-lamp assembly was placed on Wendell's desk. The spectro focus/collimation was checked but not adjusted; the numbers are in the Problem Section. The west door of the 2.5-meter enclosure and the north door of the cartridge bay seem much louder after the shutdown. The imager bias looked normal today. I'm guessing the 2.5-meter-enclosure lights were causing the low-level noise that was seen during the past few days. However, Steph still plans to perform the imager monthly checkout, viz., checkBias, biasCheck, biasGen, and bias check. I checked and updated the white board as needed. See Problems Section for misc. Watcher messages. Night: ----------- While we waited for the telescope to approach thermal equilibrium, we took spectro arcs and flats for Connie and Craig. Cartridge 8 mounted Flats are exposures 45730-45732, 45737-45739, 45743-45745, 45748-45750 Arcs are exposures 45735, 45736, 45740-45742, 45746, 45747, 45751-45756 The reason we alternated between flats and arcs was so that the NeAr lamps weren't on for too long a time. 06:30Z - After waiting to make sure a distant storm would miss us, and after evicting a packrat from the enclosure north rail, we mounted the imager and opened. Optical collimation: Tracking at the meridian and 57 degrees alt, we started a drift scan. The star images showed some elongation, so we adjusted the rotator using both ltMatch and our eyes. We have a rotator offset of +0.0037 degrees Summary of collimation M1 setmir numbers: Piston xtilt ytilt xtran ytran ------ ----- ----- ----- ----- 0 0 0 0 0 ==> before collimation 0 8 -10 0 0 ==> tilts to give good donuts 0 -6.25 7.81 427.0 341.7 ==> new tilts with translation 09:05Z - Pointing Model: We mounted the engineering camera, did set ins=engcam and looked for an fk5 star to focus in preparation of starting a pointing model. However, we couldn't find any FK5's. We checked the usual problems (flat field petals open, lens cover off the camera, etc.) but those weren't the problem. We saw a faint star in one field and tried offsetting to hunt down the FK5. That didn't work either. We then decided to look for REALLY bright stars. When we couldn't see a glint from Deneb, we went down to the telescope and saw that it was not pointing anywhere near Deneb. In fact it looked to be 70 degrees away. Likewise, Aldebaran was in the wrong part of the sky according to the TCC. Here are some coordinate conversion comparisons. Aldebaran: RA=04:35:55.24, Dec=+16:30:33.5 RA=68.9802 deg Dec=16.5093 deg AZ=102:12:57 ALT=48:08:54 at 11:30Z TCC says ALT=-22.86 and won't slew RA=0 Dec=0 AZ=222:11:35 ALT=49:04:18 at 11:30Z TCC says AZ=74.1 ALT=23.1 RA=2 Dec=0 (near the meridian at the following time) AZ=177.4 ALT=57.2 at 11:40Z TCC says alt position rejected -0.67 Tracking in mount coordinates is true. The problem arises when there is a coordinate conversion from FK5 to mount. It looks like we have a TCC problem. Sorry Russell. We didn't call Russell, because even if he installed the old TCC, it was twilight and we wouldn't be able to test it on-sky tonight. We emailed him and filed a PR instead. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6884 22:47Z 00:47Z 100 O 9.94 40.08 216 ignore 6885 06:45Z 08:29Z 100 O 129.80 155.91 188 engineering ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6885 15 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 6885 68 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 6885 120 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 6885 172 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 21:55 45700 0.0 bias 21:58 45701 0.0 bias 22:00 45702 0.0 bias 22:02 45703 0.0 bias 22:04 45704 0.0 bias 22:07 45705 0.0 bias 22:09 45706 0.0 bias 22:30 45707 0.0 bias 22:37 45708 0.0 bias 22:40 45709 0.0 bias 22:42 45710 0.0 bias 22:44 45711 0.0 bias 22:46 45712 0.0 bias 22:49 45713 0.0 bias 22:51 45714 0.0 bias 22:53 45715 0.0 bias 22:55 45716 0.0 bias 22:58 45717 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45718, plate 2623 ------- 01:03 45718 0.0 bias 01:24 45719 10.0 flat 01:26 45720 2.0 arc 01:30 45721 3.0 arc 01:32 45722 3.0 arc 01:49 45723 10.0 flat 01:51 45724 2.0 arc ----- sequence 45725, plate -9999 ------- 01:55 45725 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45726, plate 2623 ------- 01:58 45726 0.0 bias 03:04 45727 0.0 bias 03:09 45728 0.0 bias 03:15 45729 0.0 bias 03:21 45730 10.0 flat 03:23 45731 10.0 flat 03:26 45732 10.0 flat 03:31 45733 10.0 arc 03:35 45734 10.0 arc 03:41 45735 2.0 arc 03:43 45736 2.0 arc 03:48 45737 10.0 flat 03:51 45738 10.0 flat 03:54 45739 10.0 flat 04:02 45740 2.0 arc 04:05 45741 2.0 arc 04:08 45742 2.0 arc 04:14 45743 10.0 flat 04:17 45744 10.0 flat 04:20 45745 10.0 flat 04:24 45746 2.0 arc 04:27 45747 2.0 arc 04:33 45748 10.0 flat 04:35 45749 10.0 flat 04:38 45750 10.0 flat 04:43 45751 2.0 arc 04:45 45752 2.0 arc 04:48 45753 2.0 arc 04:58 45754 2.0 arc 05:01 45755 2.0 arc 05:04 45756 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:58Z 68 51 4 261 (W) 838 - Part cloudy 22:31Z 64 50 8 36 (NE) 735 - ' 23:03Z 67 51 0 208 (SSW) 766 - ' 23:35Z 68 50 6 269 (W) 672 - ' 00:07Z 70 51 2 185 (S) 755 - ' 00:39Z 63 48 7 87 (E) 771 - ' 01:10Z 63 46 7 78 (ENE) 606 - ' 01:40Z 62 49 8 86 (E) 953 - ' 02:10Z 62 48 6 101 (E) 1255 - ' 02:43Z 62 48 10 125 (SE) 1274 - ' 03:18Z 62 48 5 131 (SE) 1333 - ' 03:49Z 62 46 10 155 (SSE) 1231 - ' 04:20Z 62 47 7 161 (SSE) 1271 - ' 04:50Z 61 48 8 180 (S) 1275 - ' 05:21Z 61 48 12 143 (SE) 1409 - ' 05:52Z 60 48 3 119 (ESE) 1742 - ' 06:23Z 60 48 2 168 (SSE) 1629 - partly cloudy 06:54Z 61 47 6 174 (S) 1800 - ' 07:25Z 60 46 10 153 (SSE) 1795 - mostly clear 07:55Z 59 46 7 177 (S) 1926 - ' 08:26Z 59 46 6 182 (S) 1808 - ' 08:57Z 59 46 5 193 (SSW) 1721 - ' 09:30Z 58 46 8 181 (S) 2185 - clear 10:02Z 58 46 6 179 (S) 2006 - ' 10:34Z 58 45 6 176 (S) 2246 - ' 11:06Z 59 45 8 166 (SSE) 2277 - ' 11:39Z 57 45 6 152 (SSE) 2297 - ' 12:11Z 58 45 7 175 (S) 2282 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z Louvers opened, fans on 01:25Z Doors opened 06:15Z Opened enclosure 11:19Z Closed enclosure.
