APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday August 12, 2007 (MJD 54325) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Elena Malanushenko Support: Viktor Malanushenko (on site) Bob Pfaffenberger (on site) French Leger (phone) Steph Snedden (phone) Dan Long (phone) Constance Rockosi (phone) Wendell Jordan (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- SD & Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The weather conditions were good but not photometric. The seeing was between 1.6 and 2.5. We observed 3 plates but did not finished them: 2186 and 2628(seguefaint) and 2802(segue). We had a problem to fill spectro dewar sp1. With Bob's and French's assistance we were able to manually fill both spectrographs. Cameras 1 and 4 cooled back down to normal temperatures. Bob will investigate the problem tomorrow. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Bob carried about the past night problems. He replaced the FF lamp and carried about the spectro leak of light: patched spectro holes and added losed screws. He also replaced the spectro and imager dewars. When the critical alerts were sent out about the secondary dewer not being full, Viktor came to the site, exchanged the completely empty spectro primary dewer and opened the vent to start another fill. Sp1 was not filling, which seemed to be caused by a blocked enterence valve? Bob (along with many other people) was contacted for help and he ended up coming out to the site. We initiated a fill right away using the autofill - sp2 filled fine but the sp1 dewer did not completely fill. With the help of French and Bob, we were able to manually fill both spectrographs to the point where we saw liquid coming out. Cameras 1 and 4 cooled back down to normal temperatures. Possibilities of what happened: The lines were frozen due to constantly trying to fill. Something could have been blocking the valve leading into the secondary dewer. Another possibility is the autofill system not reading the levels correctly. There was also a leak found in the liquid nitrogen pipe that extends near the sp1 spectrograph (Bob can help point it out). More investigation will be done with this whole problem tomorrow. All orther afternoon check are ok. Night: ------ 01:50Z Started ventillation. 02:15Z enclosure is off. Cart 2, plate 2186, segueFaint Used FK5 to find a guider stars. We could not do calibration in afternoon, and did goSpecFoc and calibrate for this plate. We need to adjust mechanicals on sp1 to -2550. 03:34Z preCalibration seeing 1.2-1.6, focus -200, T=-14 03:42Z, 4:10Z science exposure 1500 sec 04:38 postCalibration s/n= 21.8 and we need to continue the observations of this plate. Cart 9, plate 2802, segue Used FK5 to find guider stars. 4:59Z preCalibration 05:06Z science 1200 the exposure did not have s/n>2 in two cameras and we need to declare it as bad. SOS complained about r1 scattered lights. 05:29Z science 1200 During the second exposure the guider stopped to update the monitor. We tried to stopMon and startMon, but it did not help. Guider Mac reported an error message as "no guider camera has been selected". We rebooted the guiderMac, did not help. Read folklore, it recommended to set tcc instrument again tcc>"set inst=spectro". It fixed the problem. By that time Audrey closed and started over her sop and tcc sessions and she had to do sop bias & init again. 06:08Z science with 1800 sec exposure. did not have s/n>2 in one r1 camera, decided to accept the exposure and go until b2>30. seeing is bad in range 1.8-2.6 humidity is going up. 06:41Z science 1500 07:09Z postcalib We obtained all b1< 2 and do not count them. Total s/n for b2 is 15.
