APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 3, 2007 (MJD 54438) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan Dmitry Bizyaev Steph Snedden (support at the evening) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The whole SEGUE Stripe 293 N observed under quite bad seeing most of time. Some signal obtained with cartridge 6 plate 2825. Actually, it can be already don, since it has been observed with 9 exposures under Moon (MJD 54401) that didn't take into account. We ask Brian Yanny to check if it can be declared as done. Some signal obtained with cart 9 plate 2424 (not done). Plate 2828 finished: 51.6 in r1 (least) collected Closed 30 min before twilight because of wind alarm - strong gusts. Scale changed and focusing in spectro mode were very difficult to do. This decreased efficiency of observations very much. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- Spectrographs set to 0C, we expect this temperature in the nigth. Night: ------ 00:25Z imager mounted. 00:37Z on-telescope bias 00:56Z opened enclosure 01:25Z starting drift for SEGUE 293 N, seeing is unstable because of the wind, we are trying to estimate seeing from 2.5m data. seeing is bad, so we switch to spectroscopy 03:15Z imager off, cart 6 plate 2825 (seguefaint) mounted collimation adjusted to 7C. 03:27Z gotoField; fk5 used - no success, spiral pattern used - no success, spiral pattern with larger step - yes, star found, with large offset (-10. 20). focus changed by -50 - guide stars disappeared from the field focus changed by +50 - we got stars back into the field focus changed by -20 - stars disappeared from the field focus changed by +20 - stars are back The same with -10 ! OK, we moved focus to -100, stars gone away, and then we adjusted the offset: D --> +10. Stars are in the field! Scale change 0.002% makes telescope to loose star. Same with 0.001! The same with 0.0005!! We cannot change the scale at all. 04:26Z precal Oops, no stars in the field aftrer the precal. GotoField - stars not there. fk5 applied, no star. Previously found offset - no star. Offset with opposite signs applied - trace of fk5 light found. Wobbling secondary mirror? 04:40Z science 1500 05:08Z science 1500 05:38Z science 1500 postcal 06:15Z cart 9 plate 2424 mounted no fk5 found, spiralPattern applied, still no star. set foc --> 0, set scale --> 1.0000000, goto field again... and fk5 star found! This time we can change scale by 0.001 and guide stars don't leave the fibers. Next we tried 0.002, 0.005, 0.01! All they work, stars are still in fibers. Going scale change 0.045, long way... Tried to move focus by 50 - it works as well as the scale change, good. Then the scale was changed slightly, and we applied 0.002, stars got out of the field again! Applied -0.002 to return them back. 07:08Z precal After switching back to guider exposures, we were lucky to see guide stars in the field, yet at the very edge of the fiber fields. Again attempt to change scale by 0.002 - the same, stars are going off the fibers. 07:20Z science 1200 scale change required is -0.007, we cannot do it! observing as is. 07:57Z science 1200 08:21Z science 1500 postcal 09:00Z cart 8 plate 2828 mounted, scale --> 1. , foc --> 0. fk5 not found, spiralPattern used. 09:26Z precal 09:34Z science 1500 10:04Z science 1500 10:31Z science 1500 postcal 11:10Z cart 2 plate 2853 mounted fk5, spiral - nothing helps to find stars. Sky is almost clear. Red alarm comes from the weather station - strong gusts (~38.5 mph). 11:55Z closed 12:00Z endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7208 22:50Z 23:09Z 100 O 124.00 128.94 44 ignore 7209 00:38Z 00:53Z 100 O 151.08 154.93 40 bias 7210 01:28Z 03:00Z 293 N -165.68 -142.72 167 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- 00:37Z on-telescope bias, run 7209 --- 01:25Z godrift, run 7210, 293 N SEGUE stripe, in focus from the begining (T=7C, F=-360), skippy ... skippy is not working properly. Worked fine at the second attempt. --- The same problems when focus or scale are tried to be partially fixed. Kaike found a way for the focus change: negative focus move (-100) followed by positive D-offset change (D=+10) returns stars back to the guider fibers. For the scale, the similar was not found. Scale cannot be changed even by 0.0005. 1.2 hour was lost with cart 6 due to this problem. It also slows down work with other cartridges and decreased integration efficiency.
