APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 24, 2007 (MJD 54459) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko (days) Dmitry Bizyaev (observer) Stephanie Snedden (observer) Elena Malanushenko - Bringers of dessert Anna Malanushenko - " " " Wayne West ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown - night 1 ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Optical collimation was tuned New 72 point pointing model obtained Some moony spectro exposures on plate 2851 were taken that may or may not be useful. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- All equipment are checked and work properly. Spectro collimation set for -4C. Ventilation is started at 23:30Z. Cart 9 is mounted. Home relax mirrors are done. Flats & wavelength position of fibers are checked. They are good and no adjusted. Night: ------ We started the evening with a Christmas eve desserts courtesy of Elena, Anna, Viktor and Dmitry. There was fruit salad first, followed by rich Napoleon and chocolate cake. 00:45Z - Cartridge 9, plate 2851 - SEGUE bright We had 1.9 Zappas, but with no cloud we thought we might get useful signal while we waited for the telescope to equilibrate for optical collimation. 01:14Z - Started pre-cals. Air temps were warmer than expected, so we adjusted the focus. 01:38Z - Started science. We had bad sky residuals, so these data may not be useful, except for evaluating Dmitry's SEGUE bright S/N, sky and exposure time correlations. We did nine exposures totaling 8100s, that can be added to previous moony signal. We will wait for feedback before we unplug the plate, because of the bad sky values. 04:46Z - We mounted the imager so we could look at the collimation. 05:08Z - Drift started at on 82 N at lambda -125. We made the initial assumption that the alignment was close to the optically collimated position when the setmir positions are set to zero. This assumption is based on the fact that French put in an offset this summer, during mechanical centering of the primary, to match the position we always end up at after optical collimation. We then did x and y translations without tilts to get evenly illuminated donuts. The best donuts across all CCDs was with an x translation of +100 and a y-translation of -200. Please note that the seeing deteriorated during the collimation, so we may not have perfect collimation yet, but it is better than before and should last us for a while. The above translations were the values we put in default.dat. These translations did affect our pointing offset, so we chose to use the rest of the night to get a new, full pointing model, using the same fiducial crossing data from a couple of weeks ago. 07:41Z - Collimation drift ended. 07:46Z - Engineering camera mounted for the standard 72 point pointing model.
