APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday January 10, 2008 (MJD 54476) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko (day) Howard Brewington (observer) Audrey Simmons (observer) Jon Brinkmann (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We had some run-ins with clouds at the very beginning of the night, but then they cleared and we were able to gain signal on the following plates: Cart 9, plate 2865 Cart 7, plate 1630 - FINISHED Cart 2, plate 1636 Cart 8, plate 2867 Cart 4, plate 2609 - FINISHED Cart 5, plate 2610 - FINISHED Cart 6, plate 2603 And of course we had our fair share of problems, most of which were centered around the restarting of the zophod computer when the cloud camera failed to run. We lost about an hour of time when landru (the MAC computer) froze up during an exposure and had to be restarted (see log). Some smaller problems: the APO Weather Status page failed to work for ~30min, the SOS webpage was down for ~15min, and the PT was stuck for ~15min when it failed to observe anything. A big thanks to Jon for helping solve all of these problems. Note: We found the light right outside the east downstairs door of the telescope turned on. This light might have contaminated the exposure that we took on the first cartridge of the night (9). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- All equipment are checked and work properly. Spectro collimation set for -5C. Ventilation is started at 23:20Z. Cart 9 is mounted. Night: ------ 00:12Z - Opened enclosure to partly cloudy skies. Note: We had trouble with the running the cloud camera. We were flying blind during the first part of the night while Jon worked on rebooting the "zophod" computer. 00:46Z - goToField cart 9, seguefaint170 plate 2865. Had to use an fk5 with a spiral pattern to find the field, but we were in very early twilight. 01:14Z - Precals. 01:24Z - 30 min exposure. Seeing 1.4" Finished the exposure, but efficiency was less than 30% throughout because of clouds. SOS returned a value that was not good, so we declared this exposure bad. 02:02Z - Attempted another 30 min exposure. This time, efficiency was back to ~60%. This exposure might be good. Note: During the cartridge change, I noticed that there was a light on outside of the east downstairs door of the 2.5m telescope. I turned it off right away, but it might have contaminated the previous exposure, as well as the calibration exposures (some values are yellow in the flat and arc exposures). Note: There was a small period of time when the SOS results webpage wasnt working, so we were unable to check the outcome of what we obtained. 02:51Z - Mounted cart 1, seguefaint170 plate 2866. GSFOGTF. 02:58Z - Precals. 03:05Z - 30 min exposure. ~15 mins into the exposure, Howard's computer (landru) froze up. Since the plate already expired, I exchanged the cartridges while Howard and Jon worked on getting the computer back up and running. Inside the new SOP window, Howard tried to obtain a bias but an error message kept popping up: "Exposure already in progress". When we tried issuing an endStare -abort command, it came back with the error "Mechanicals: No exposure running". We issued a "mechSend s" and saw that the camera shutter was open and the exposure was still counting down. We then issued a "mechSend S," which ended the exposure. Now, Howard was able to get a bias (plus an extra to make sure that it worked). We finally were back up and running. Note: The APO Weather Status webpage stopped working for about ~30 mins. 03:54Z - goToField for cartridge 7, photoz79 plate 1630. GSFOGTF. 03:58Z - Precals. 04:05Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.4" 04:33Z - 25 min exposure. 05:01Z - 15 min exposure. 05:20Z - Postcals. We gained enough signal to declare this plate DONE. 05:38Z - Mounted cart 2, photoz79 plate 1636. GSFOGTF. 05:35Z - Precals. 05:41Z - 22 min exposure. Seeing 1.5" 06:06Z - 22 min exposure. 06:40Z - Mounted cart 8, seguefaint170 plate 2867. GSFOGTF. 06:42Z - Precals. 06:50Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.5" We gained enough signal to declare this plate DONE. 10:40Z - Mounted cart 5, chunk153 plate 2610. GSFOGTF. 10:47Z - Precals. 10:54Z - 20 min exposure. Seeing 1.5" 11:17Z - 15 min exposure. Seeing 1.4" 11:35Z - 10 min exposure. 11:48Z - Postcals. We gained enough signal to declare this plate DONE. 11:55Z - Mounted cart 6, chunk153 plate 2603. GSFOGTF. 12:03Z - Precals. 12:10Z - 15 min exposure. Seeing 1.0-2.0" 12:28Z - 20 min exposure. Seeing 1.5-1.6" This plate is not yet finished. Needs one more exposure. 13:00Z - Closed enclosure and stopped ventilating. 13:12Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7276 21:55Z 22:21Z 100 O 147.67 154.27 54 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 48769, plate -9999 ------- 21:46 48769 0.0 bias ----- sequence 48770, plate 2609 ------- 22:35 48770 10.0 flat 22:38 48771 2.0 arc 22:41 48772 3.0 arc 22:44 48773 2.0 arc ----- sequence 48774, plate -9999 ------- 23:15 48774 0.0 bias ----- sequence 48775, plate 2865 ------- 23:18 48775 0.0 bias ----- sequence 48775, plate 2865 ------- 01:16 48776 10.0 flat 01:19 48777 2.0 arc 01:56 48778 1800.0 target 02:34 48779 1800.0 target 02:37 48780 10.0 flat 02:40 48781 2.0 arc 9.1 2.0 9.1 6.8 ----- sequence 48782, plate 2866 ------- 03:01 48782 10.0 flat 03:03 48783 2.0 arc ----- sequence 48784, plate -9999 ------- 03:42 48784 0.0 bias 03:45 48785 0.0 bias ----- sequence 48786, plate 1630 ------- 04:01 48786 10.0 flat 04:03 48787 2.0 arc 04:33 48788 1500.0 target 05:00 48789 1500.0 target 05:19 48790 902.0 target 05:22 48791 10.0 flat 05:24 48792 2.0 arc 40.8 29.9 38.1 40.6 -
