APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday March 15, 2008 (MJD 54541) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (dayShift) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The telescope vibrations returned today; see afternoon checkout. The cloud camera problem from last night has been resolved; see afternoon checkout. Clouds got us, we never open. Got dithered flats. During morning checkout, we found that the red light on the circulation panel (the southwest wall of lower enclosure) was flashing and bepping. Pressing acknowledge buttom stoped the bepping, but the light was still flashing. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- During the checkout, while doing test slews, I noticed that the 2.5-meter telescope had a very bad vibration again when moved in Az and Rot with the following commands: scope position: 121,90,40 TCC> track 151, 90 mount /rota=00 /rotty=mount scope position: 151,90,00 TCC> track 121, 90 mount /rota=40 /rotty=mount The vibration occurred only when slews were done at the same time with Az and Rot. The vibration was greatest at the end of the slews. I talked with Dan Long about the problem. He asked that I change some of the I and D values, via the mcpMenu, for Az and Rot. Then, I did test slews while monitoring the behavior of the scope. Dan was able to gather some useful data. After these tests, I returned the I and D values for Az and Rot to their normal settings. The cloud camera was also unhappy. I found no images from last night at: [irsc@zaphod:/data/home/irsc/data/54540], and no images were landing in today's directory of 54541. I confirmed the 12-volt DC source voltage at the CCD camera as well as the camera's raw video output. I also confirmed the green status lights on the video/fiber converters. Beyond these checks, I concluded the problem was most likely software related, so I contacted Jon Brinkmann. He discovered a permission problem that resulted from a recent (auto) software update. The spectro focus was checked but not adjusted; it's set for about +5.0 degrees C. The spectro numbers via collimate are posted in the Problems Section. The disk space at /data and /files was good; see below: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 127G 7.9G 95% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 620G 251G 72% /data sdssfiles1:/data1/data 1.5T 542G 851G 39% /files iccSoundOff responded that all crates were available; see Problems Section for command's output. I did not start ventilation because of clouds and high dust count. Night: ------ 02:00Z cloudy and dust count at 3 K. 04:00Z dust count down to 2K, we decided to start ventilation. 05:20Z started dithered flats. The first attempt did not success due to an error: Motor problem, mechanics did not responds correctly, response was mb 100. 05:56Z The second attempt was good. dithered flat frames: 51080 -- 51094 associated arc frames: 51095 - 96. 11:35Z endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7369 20:41Z 21:23Z 100 O -166.66 -156.25 83 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 51069, plate -9999 ------- 20:07 51069 0.0 bias ----- sequence 51070, plate 2961 ------- 20:37 51070 10.0 flat 20:39 51071 2.0 arc 20:44 51072 3.0 arc 20:46 51073 3.0 arc ----- sequence 51074, plate -9999 ------- 00:16 51074 0.0 bias 00:21 51075 0.0 bias ----- sequence 51076, plate 2961 ------- 05:11 51076 10.0 flat 05:14 51077 2.0 arc 05:26 51078 10.0 flat 05:30 51079 10.0 flat 06:01 51080 10.0 flat 06:05 51081 10.0 flat 06:09 51082 10.0 flat 06:13 51083 10.0 flat 06:18 51084 10.0 flat 06:22 51085 10.0 flat 06:26 51086 10.0 flat 06:30 51087 10.0 flat 06:34 51088 10.0 flat 06:38 51089 10.0 flat 06:42 51090 10.0 flat 06:47 51091 10.0 flat 06:51 51092 10.0 flat 06:55 51093 10.0 flat 06:59 51094 10.0 flat 07:03 51095 2.0 arc 07:06 51096 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 19:03Z 44 8 31 265 (W) 2259 - overcast 19:35Z 45 8 23 268 (W) 2146 - 20:07Z 46 10 23 267 (W) 2074 - 20:38Z 49 12 23 227 (SW) 2359 - 21:08Z 51 13 32 235 (SW) 2106 - 21:40Z 46 11 33 259 (W) 1780 - 22:12Z 47 12 31 261 (W) 1968 - 22:48Z 47 8 30 265 (W) 1869 - 23:20Z 51 9 30 256 (WSW) 1789 - 23:52Z 47 6 32 260 (W) 1571 - 00:25Z 46 7 25 268 (W) 2063 - 00:57Z 45 6 30 248 (WSW) 2515 - 01:49Z 44 6 21 252 (WSW) 3222 - 02:21Z 43 7 19 249 (WSW) 2824 - 02:53Z 43 10 19 262 (W) 2702 - 03:25Z 43 11 17 241 (WSW) 2171 - 03:58Z 42 11 21 253 (WSW) 1845 - 04:30Z 41 11 28 232 (SW) 1729 - 05:02Z 41 11 22 231 (SW) 1416 - 05:34Z 42 12 27 240 (WSW) 1464 - 06:06Z 42 13 39 233 (SW) 1836 - 06:38Z 41 13 33 227 (SW) 1850 - 07:10Z 41 11 33 231 (SW) 1443 - 07:42Z 40 9 33 242 (WSW) 1266 - 08:15Z 40 8 29 221 (SW) 1039 - 08:47Z 39 9 26 235 (SW) 1209 - 09:19Z 39 11 21 238 (WSW) 1254 - 09:51Z 39 12 24 213 (SSW) 1259 - 10:23Z 39 11 15 232 (SW) 1392 - 10:55Z 39 11 32 242 (WSW) 1409 - overcast 11:28Z 38 12 29 228 (SW) 1505 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- No interlocks bypassed.
