APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday September 4, 2008 (MJD 54714) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Steph Snedden Support: Jon Brinkmann Visitor: Jean McKeever (UW) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- PointingModelThenScience! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- M2 galils had to be rebooted again. This is becoming a daily occurrence. Pointing model finally achieved! We sneaked in three spectro exposures on plate 3106 around closures for humidity, but SoS failed to reduce them (see the log body). Connie, could you have a look at the spectra and at the SoS logs? New nominal mirror values saved. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The M2 Galils were not communicating again, when we came in. The error light was lit on the control box, and we had to reboot the galils. This is becoming a daily ocurrence. French was notified, and said he will put someone to work on it. We homed the secondary after the reboot. Also the MCP became unavailable, then came back on its own. It did not reboot, the status button just went unavailable for a short time, then came back. Evening: -------- Opened just after sunset. 02:29Z: Started pointing model Results: 03:15Z. Pointing model. The weather condition is very good, clear, almost photometric. We almost mounted the imager, but in our judgement it was not quite photometric. There was structure in the cloud camera images and we could see small thin clouds appearing nearby on the satellite images. When we opened the flat field petals after going to the field, one of the FF motors started making a whining noise. We weren't sure if it was a motor running after the petal was open or if it was a vibration. We opened and closed the petals a few times, and eventually the noise stopped. Cartridge 6, plate 3106 - SEGUE: -------------------------------- Guide stars on goToField. 07:06Z - The humidity started climbing as we went to the field. We wanted to test spectroscopy, so we pushed the humidity limit just a little in order to take a ten minute exposure. We were rushed, so the focus and scale were only approximate. We just wanted to get light down the fibers. Son-of-Spectro failed to reduce the science exposure. The exposure number and sky values showed up, but the (S/N)^2 entries were blank. There were no warning messages. It looks like SoS just failed to complete the reduction. There was nothing obviously wrong in the splogs (to our eyes), but an SoS expert would be a better judge. We tried sos_redo once, and it made no difference. Perhaps the blue camera images just didn't have enough objects with high enough signal? Otherwise, the raw images looked normal. 07:25Z - Closed because of high humidity 09:00Z - Re-opened with the same plate (3106). This time, we needed an FK5, but it was in the field of fiber 10. Of course, the humidity started to climb again. Took two exposures of 20 minutes each, neither of which showed up in SoS, then the humidity got us and we were forced to close. 10:05Z - Enclosure on again. 11:20Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7671 23:22Z 23:34Z 100 O 44.07 47.23 35 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):n QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 54466, plate -9999 ------- 23:53 54466 0.0 bias 01:31 54467 0.0 bias 06:34 54468 0.0 bias ----- sequence 54469, plate 3106 ------- 06:57 54469 10.0 flat 07:00 54470 2.0 arc 07:15 54471 602.0 target 09:06 54472 10.0 flat 09:08 54473 2.0 arc 09:32 54474 1200.0 target 09:55 54475 1200.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 09:04Z 6 3106 -18.30 -0.0008 63.71 0.0013 164.54 0.0000 1.000160 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 09:04Z 6 3106 1.00016 -1579 -114 50 -18 63.7 10.7 6 175 -- 1.2" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:26Z 59 41 6 327 (NNW) 830 - mostly clear 23:58Z 62 46 9 272 (W) 869 - ' 00:31Z 60 45 8 292 (WNW) 814 - ' 01:04Z 58 42 5 265 (W) 774 - ' 01:36Z 55 40 1 261 (W) 784 - ' 02:08Z 54 39 4 270 (W) 717 - '' 02:40Z 54 37 4 274 (W) 725 - ' 03:10Z 55 35 3 268 (W) 811 - ' 03:41Z 55 35 1 232 (SW) 760 - ' 04:11Z 55 37 1 231 (SW) 727 - ' 04:41Z 54 40 4 111 (ESE) 845 - ' 05:13Z 56 37 0 310 (NW) 777 - ' 05:45Z 56 34 1 251 (WSW) 677 - ' 06:17Z 53 44 8 131 (SE) 846 - ' 06:47Z 51 45 9 131 (SE) 1073 - ' 07:17Z 51 47 12 129 (SE) 1262 - ' 07:50Z 51 47 11 140 (SE) 1211 - ' 08:22Z 50 46 7 179 (S) 1149 - ' 08:54Z 51 45 9 181 (S) 1095 - ' 09:26Z 51 45 9 166 (SSE) 1168 - ' 09:56Z 49 46 4 133 (SE) 1175 - ' 10:27Z 50 46 5 189 (S) 1300 - ' 10:59Z 51 47 7 189 (S) 2495 - ' 11:31Z 50 48 3 187 (S) 3545 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z - Started ventilation 01:48Z - Opened enclosure 07:25Z - Closed enclosure.
