Total S/N^2 in SOS: 62.4 59.9 64.0 46.6) *Boss* (see log for more details) Imaged all of stripe 72 S (from lambda 148 to -172) under good seeing conditions (~1.4") Imaged all of stripe 72 N (from lambda -164 to -153) under acceptable seeing conditions (~) Note: We continued the drift on 72 N until 12-degree twilight (lambda -152 to -141.6). This data is useful for calibrations. The force readings on the hand paddle are not reading correct values during instrument changes. The lift would not work when mounting the imager, so we had to switch over to manual. At the end of the night, we put the paddle back to the automatic side. Jon replaced the DIMM computer with a spare and now the DIMM is back up and running. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- ad4 was not responsive. We rebooted the crate. The pool complained that it was full. It prevented us from starting an imager bias. After verifying that the data was backed up, we attempted to clear the pool with just the command 'initNight -poolInit' but nothing happened. Instead, we followed the instructions and cleared the pool with: http://sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu/sdssProcedures/archiverCheck.html#clear_pool SOS failed to create a new directory for tonight's MJD and copy over the spectro files. An aporsync process was hung. After killing the process, SOS was happy again. Jon switched out the DIMM computer with a spare, and now it is back up and running. Spectro collimate set for ~10C. 00:05Z - Started ventilating, with doors and louvers open, fans on. Mounted cart 8, plate 3138. The force readings on the hand paddle to the cartridge lift (first line of numbers) are not reading correct values. Night: ------ 00:53Z - Sunset. 00:55Z - Opened enclosure to mostly clear skies (some cirrus clouds). 01:25Z - goToField on cart 8, segue aug08d plate 3138. fk5 was used because it was still very bright outside. No offsets were needed. 01:55Z - Precals. 02:01Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.3" 02:10Z - Twilight ended. 02:35Z - Mounted cart 5, segue aug08d plate 3130. GSFOGTF. The cartridge lift failed to move during the mounting of this cartridge. I noticed that when the pin was put into place, I did not hear the altitude brake engage. I took the pin out and put it back in and then the lift began working again. 02:47Z - Precals. 02:54Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.3" 03:22Z - 25 min exposure. 03:50Z - 25 min exposure. 04:19Z - Midcals. 04:25Z - 25 min exposure. 04:54Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.5-2.0" 05:22Z - 25 min exposure. 05:50Z - Midcals. 05:56Z - 25 min exposure. 06:25Z - 25 min exposure. Seeing 1.4" 06:54Z - Postcals. We gained a S/N of 36.3 32.8 35.5 24.3 tonight, totaling 62.4 59.9 64.0 46.6. This plate could most likely be done. 07:02Z - The clouds cleared and the seeing is reasonable. Switched to imaging. Mounted imager. Corrected an altitude fiducial. The lift did not work on the automatic side, so we switched over to manual. This probably has to do with the force values on the hand paddle not reading correctly. 07:19Z - Started imager bias, run #7707, frames 8-33. 07:36Z - scanStripe 72 S start_lambda 145. 07:38Z - goDrift, run #7708. In focus at frame 17, skippy happy at from the start (frame 10: results below). Seeing ~1.3", altitude 43 degrees. 07:50Z - Ramp began at lambda 148, frame 25. 07:58Z - Science began at lambda 150, frame 38. Brief seeing spike to ~1.9" from frames 211-217, from lambda 175.8-176.6 10:21Z - Science ended at lambda -174, frame 279. 10:29Z - Ramp ended at lambda -172, frame 292. 10:30Z - endDrift. Altitude 47 degrees. Run #7708 went from frames 8-292. Seeing good throughout. 10:31Z - scanstripe 72 N start_lambda -165. 10:32Z - goDrift, run #7709. In focus from the beginning. Skippy is happy from the beginning. Seeing 1.3". Altitude 53 degrees. 10:36Z - Ramp began at lambda -164, frame 12. 10:44Z - Science began at lambda -162, frame 25. Seeing spike, lambda -163 to -162.3, frames 18-23. Seeing ~1.8" Seeing spike, lambda -161.3 to -160.5, frames 30-36. Seeing ~2.1" 11:12Z - Science ended at lamdba -155, frame 72. 11:18Z - Ramp ended at lambda -153, frame 85. Seeing mostly good throughout. Just a few frames went above the 2.0" seeing limit. We continued drifting since the BOSS imaging notes on the SDSS3 wiki said that the data would be useful for calibrations. Excess data spanded from lambda -153 to -141.6, frames 86-161. Seeing ~1.5" 11:36Z - 18 degree twilight. 12:05Z - 12 degree twilight. 12:05Z - endDrift. Altitude 52 degrees. Run #7709, frames 8-161. 12:08Z - Removed imager. Mounted cart 1, plate 3129. Closed enclosure. Stopped ventilating.
