Took exposures on: Cart 4, plate 3021A (we had problems with guide stars - see log) Cart 7, plate 3074B When we were open, the 12:00 FF pedal kept closing and opening due to the wind (at 33mph wind gusts) - see log. Dan Long was informed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ----- No problems noted during afternoon checkout, although the auto cleanupMurmur failed earlier today and the murmur server was stopped and restarted manually. Removed MJDs 54748 and 54749 data to free up a little more disk space. The disk space is now: /dev/sdb1 917G 809G 62G 93% /data sdssfiles1p:/data1/data 1.5T 1019G 374G 74% /files Mounted cartridge 5 (SEGUE) for spectro focus check. Spectro focus set for about 4 or 5C. Details after the problems section. Mounted cartridge 4 (MARVELS pre-selection) for evening twilight shakedown test. Night: ----- Cart 4, MARVELS pre-selection plate 3021A ----------------------------------------- 23:50Z - Opened about ten minutes before sunset for a MARVELS twilight shakedown test. This was a test to see how early we could take useful data on a pre-selection plate. 00:38Z - Used fk5 to find field (too bright into twilight). The guider started to be able to see stars at about 8 degree twilight, but not enough to set an accurate scale. The seeing was also poor (~2.5"), so this test should probably be done again when the wind is out of the west. 01:10Z - I accidentially control-z'd out of my sop session and then was unable to grab the instruments back. With Steph's help, I killed all of my dead processes and logged out of the ports. We lost about 25 minutes with this problem. I'm very sorry. 01:40Z - Began 5x20 sec exposures. Seeing 1.6" with only two guide stars resolved. There were other stars in the field, but they were very diffuse. A focus loop did not help. 01:59Z - Postcals. Cart 7, MARVELS plate 3074B --------------------------- 02:13Z - goToField. fk5 star used. 02:19Z - Started 50 min exposure + cals. Seeing 1.6" 03:11Z - When switching over to field A, I noticed that the 12:00 FF pedal occasionally closed and then opened again due to the wind. The wind was coming out of the east and we were facing towards the west. The wind gusts were steady at around 33mph. 04:00Z - Closed enclosure. Steph, French, and Dan Long were contacted. If the wind falls down below at least 30mph, we might try opening again. The engineers will take a look at the pedal tomorrow. 11:26Z - Wind gusts up to 49mph sustained. Doesn't look like the weather will improve anytime soon.
