APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday February 8, 2010 (MJD 55236) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shelden Steph Snedden Kaike Pan (afternoon) Support: Jon Brinkmann ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- BOSS Plates 3752, 3759 declared DONE Signal obtained on BOSS plates 3769, 3780, but not Done. Cartridge 17 was put on sky and worked. The fiber angles appear to be good. Also, the guide fiber throughput looks good and the guide fibers are reasonably in focus. However, there was a problem with SoS and the flat that we took. See the log body. The telescope chiller pump gauge (under the stairs) reads zero. Has it been shut off on purpose? The spectro dewar will need changing during the a.m. STUI MCP problem for Alaina, see log body. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- All systems, actors, and the telescope were checked. No problem to report. Boss spectro collimation were checked with cart 11 and 10. 23:15Z started ventilation. Night: ------- Delayed opening to clouds and rising humidity. Clouds started to dissipate at about sunset, and the humidity started to level off. 01:02Z - Safe to open. Did not do an LN2 fill, since humidity was slowly climbing, and we believed we might have a limited window of opportunity. The last fill was three hours ago, so we had several hours before we would have to fill again. When asking the DIMM to center on Polaris, it slewed to the horizon. I moved back to Polaris and tried agin. The second time, the centering worked. The PSFs were spread into two short line segments at first, and I could feel a slight vibration in the camera. I held the camera body firmly with my hand and the vibration damped out. The images were fine after that. I could not tell if it was the fan causing the vibration. 01:24Z - Cartridge 10, plate - 3752 - BOSS ------------------------------------------- GSOGTF Took two sets of Hartmanns. sp1 sp2 Temp: 0.1C -0.4C b: 6.4 deg -14.5 deg r: 734 -184 The requested r moves were made, and another Hartmann gave Temp: 0.1 -0.7 b: 8.1 -12.5 r: 571 -922 01:53Z - Started first 15 minute science exposure. This is it's first light. On the first loadCartridge and gotoField, the guider flat looked fine in ds9, but the first guider image showed the gray boxes. Furthermore Alaina's STUI MCP flat field button became permanently grayed out, but Steph's worked. We tried starting over again on this cartridge from the loadCartridge and gotoField. This time, the guider flat was applied properly and we had GSOGTF. The fiber angles look good, the position error vectors were all in a similar direction when we were not quite centered up, and the guider pulled all the stars in properly. Congratulations, it's a new cartridge. GSOGTF Collimate results: sp1 sp2 Before adjustment Temp -3.4C -4.1C b: 16.6 -3.9 r: -2243 -2352 After adjustment: b: 7.8 -12.0 r: -571 -230 SoS did not reduce r2 for any of the exposures for this plate. The raw files looked okay (good enough that I think they should have reduced). The flat fits header was okay. We tried using sos_aporedo as well, and r2 still did not reduce. The error message was that SoS needed a flat to reduce the exposures. Curious. The flat does exist. It may take a less sleepy brain to find what has caused the r2 flat to be unreduceable. Readout glitch perhaps?
