APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday March 7, 2010 (MJD 55263) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Viktor Malanushenko on-line support: Stephanie Snedden Craig Loomis ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! 7 Mar 2010 55263.0 0.46 02:27 12:01 06:26 16:02 BOSS 9.6 hours ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The night was comletely lost by the weather conditions: nearby radar return, then high humidity, lightning on cite, some snow and strong wind. Kyle asked about some boss test to check hartmann masks and it was been done. A full description is in the 'log' section. Stephanie Snedden and Craig Loomis found out some evidence that hartmann masks do not work properly on sp1. Craig filed PR #649 about that. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- All systems on telescope are checked and work properly. 00:05Z opened doors, louvers, fans off, started ventillations Some radar return was nearby us. Night: ------ We have got the request from Kyle to make arc-hartmann-arc sequence with 5 min warmed arc lamps. We need to compare arc and hartmann exposures to check the work of hartmann masks. --- "... we should take the following exposures as a test: turn on arc lamps wait 5 minutes for lamps to warm take 4 second arc take hartmann exposures take 4 second arc This is the "take 4 second arc" step and is extremely important. We want to compare the hartmann arcs to the standard arcs to see if there is a 50% reduction in the line strengths." ------ 2010-03-08 05:00:46.118226 Arc Lamps on [observer@sos3 ~]$ list 55263 | grep -e "b1" 20 05:10 b1-00111211 17 3816 arc Out 4.6 27682 28182 28934 21 05:11 b1-00111212 17 3816 arc Lef 4.6 27682 28182 28934 HART 22 05:13 b1-00111213 17 3816 arc Rig 4.6 27682 28182 28934 HART 23 05:14 b1-00111214 17 3816 arc Out 4.6 27682 28182 28934 The test is done. After evaluation of the results and comparison with last night calibration exposures, Craig suspected that something wrong with sp1 hartmann masks. Based on his recommendation, we went to enclosure and investigated the sounds of hartmann masks responce on different kind of commands. We hear two kind of sounds on sp2 as pneumatic air and shutter click. We could hear only pneumatic sound on sp1. Stephanie ask Dan Long to check this tomorrow. Our investigators thought it might be good to do another series similar to previous but with longer integration time, as 15 sec.
