APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday June 19, 2010 (MJD 55367) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS until 07:24 (4.0 h), then BOSS (2.8 h) ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Partly cloudy during first half, then mostly clear. Poor seeing. Observed: MARVELS 3797A, Field 1349 3899A, KEPLER4 3359B, K15 BOSS 4065 - Not done 4082 - DONE The spectro 180-liter dewar will need replacing today. Another instance of rotator aborts tonight (see log). We had several instances of the BOSS flat hanging in a "legible" state for a minute or two, as reported by STUI's status GUI. The flat would then read out normally. Details in the log body. Note: Because of an NFS mount problem, we were unable to run the "marvels" IDL script tonight. Jon is aware of the problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 00:55Z - Turned on ThAr lamp 01:40Z - Started enclosure ventilation Compressed mcptpm data on sdsshost2 up through MJD 54789. Night: ------ Nearby radar return and virga delayed opening by 15 minutes. 02:33Z - Cartridge 1, plate 3797A FIELD 1349 - MARVELS ------------------------------------------------------ Needed an "offset ra -.002, .002" to see guide stars. Seeing very poor (2.5 - 3 asec FWHM). Waited for 12 degree twilight Alt: 43 degrees. Between this and the poor seeing, the data may be marginal. On going to instChange, the rotator axis aborted. There was no sound of mechanical binding. The rotator stopped, the error accumulated and the axis went out of closed loop. A time stamp is roughly 04:20Z. Unfortunately, I did not check the rotator wrap, as the telescope was at zenith and it was hard to access. The rotator was at about 90 degrees when this happened. 04:23Z - Cartridge 5, plate 3899A, KEPLER4 - MARVELS --------------------------------------------------- Had trouble finding guide stars. Cleared the offsets and did another go to field, and the rotator moved 360 degrees to the other side of the wrap. Then, a thick cloud moved in. Eventually found the field with "offset arc -.006,0".
