FLEX ENG. --------- Kyle's sky/background test. Completed scale change tests using MARVELS PMT for monitoring. Tested Paul's guider changes (e.g. decentering) which seem to work as expected. Completed observation sequence of astrometric plate 3523 on Cart. 13. There were no guide fibers showing up at all in the NE quadrant of Cart. 13. Can someone have a look? Details in Log. MARVELS ------- Cart. 4, 3519A, K20 Cart. 4, 3519B, K14 Cart. 6, 3089A, FIELD1110 BOSS ---- Cart. 10, 3699 (DONE) We took the BOSS science exposures from the STUI command line with 'boss exposure science itime=900' because the SOPGUI was hung in a 'Running' state even though the BOSS Status window showed Exp Status as 'IDLE'. Details in Log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- Afternoon checkout ran late because of the ops telecon. Checkout at telescope was without problems, but SoS was down because of some bad exposures Craig took during the day. BOSS Hartmanns were taken on cartridge 17 and collimation was determined to be good. A subsequent bias, dark, flat and arc did not reduce because of the SoS problem. SoS was eventually restarted, but we did not do a redo of the cartridge 17 exposures because of Craig's test exposures that might cause it to fail again. The west door must still be operated in manual mode. 00:15Z - Opened to clear skies. Started a force-fill from the 180L LN2 dewars. 00:20Z - We opened the DIMM and powered it up. The monitor at the DIMM was completely blank and the computer was totally unresponsive. We went down to the lower enclosure and reset the computer and then things appeared to be back to normal so we logged in and started the DIMM software. Upon opening the software there were complaints that the CCD was 'NOT CONNECTED'. We put an ear to the chip and verified the fan was running and it certainly sounded like it was powered on. Cart. 4, 3519A, K20 ******************* 00:44Z - GSOGTF. 01:08Z - MARVELS science. ----------- Scale Tests ----------- After the MARVELS science exposure we ran a series of scale tests where we monitored the MJCI PMT to watch flux changes associated with scale changes of different magnitude while Craig and Paul watched the guider images. We took about a dozen screen captures of the PMT to archive these flux changes. An email was sent to sdss3-infrastructure with screen captrues of the scale changes to illustrate how the flux changed. 02:37Z - MARVELS cals. SoS results showed everything in-spec. The guide fibers (9, 10, 14) on the NE quadrant of the plate appear not to have been plugged. 04:19Z - 3.5" seeing showing no signs of improvement over a few minutes time. Kyle was on the phone at the time and confirmed not to do the astrometric test under these conditions, but he recommended a test of the background sky instead. --------------- Kyle's Sky Test --------------- 04:22Z - We tried taking a 5 min. exp. with 1' offset in RA, but the exposure never succeeded. It appears there was confusion between the BOSS Exp Status reading "IDLE", but SOPGUI saying an exposure was "Running". 04:33Z - 5 min. exposure with 1' offset from field AND +90 in rotator. (122420) 04:44Z - 5 min. exposure with 1' offset from field. (122421) After the exposure finished the readout, the BOSS Exp Status was "IDLE" while the SOPGUI status was still "Running". ----------------- Astrometric Plate (Sci. exps. 122422 thru 122441) ----------------- 04:46Z - Seeing got better (back to 1.6") so we proceeded with the astrometric plate observations. 04:56Z - 2 min. exposure with guider on, tracking, no additional offsets. 05:00Z - 2 min. exposure with guider on, tracking, no additional offsets. 05:03Z - 2 min. exposure with guider off, tracking, +0.5" offset in RA. Cleared offsets and re-centered. 05:07Z - 2 min. exposure. Ignore this exposure, offsets did not clear and guiding was still on. Changed 'QUALITY' to "bad". Cleared offsets and re-centered. 05:13Z - 2 min. exposure with guider off, tracking, -0.5" offset in RA. Cleared offsets and re-centered. 05:18Z - 2 min. exposure with guider off, tracking, +0.5" offset in Dec. Cleared offsets and re-centered. 05:22Z - 2 min. exposure with guider off, tracking, -0.5" offset in Dec. Cleared offsets and re-centered. 05:26Z - 2 min. exposure with guider on, tracking, no additional offsets. 05:30Z - 2 min. exposure with guider on, tracking, no additional offsets. Seeing still about 1.6". 06:06Z - 2 min. exposure. 06:09Z - 2 min. exposure. 08:04Z - Platedb web-app reverted to the Traceback page with the error 'AttributeError: expired_attributes'. ------------------- Paul's Guider Tests ------------------- Paul tested guider de-centering and it seemed to work as expected. It allows the observer to guide on a position in the fiber different from the fiber center which should provide better results in the observations of the astrometric observations since we can guide on the offset position as opposed to applying an offset and then just tracking with that offset and not applying closed-loop guiding corrections. It will also be useful for the IR-to-visible correction when APOGEE comes online. A few notes: guider off ;turn off normal guiding guider on decenter force ;enable de-center-option guiding ;set offsets and guide +ve rotator offset appears to move the rotator CW. 07:59Z - MARVELS cals. Cart. 6, 3089A, FIELD1110 ************************* 08:10Z - gotoField. We took the guider flat ('guider flat time=0.5 cartridge=6' produced gimg_1738.fits) and then we started guiding and we didn't see fiber images, just the fiber postage stamps. We inspected the flat and confirmed we had counts around 14-15k in the fibers. We reverted to the guider version tagged 'current' through stageManager and then took a flat with the same command as before and this produced gimg_1768.fits. A visual inspection of this image confirmed counts in the 14-15k range again. Upon starting guiding we had the fiber images in the guide monitor as expected this time. 08:29Z - MARVELS science. 09:21Z - MARVELS cals. We had to take BOSS science exposures manually through the STUI Log ('boss exposure boss itime=900') since the SOPGUI was stuck on "Running" even though the BOSS window showed Exp Status as "IDLE".
