APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 17, 2001 (MJD 52170) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Steph Snedden (of the stuffed-up nose) Swinging Mike Harvanek Gretchen VanDoren Bruce Gillespie Russell Owen - by phone French Leger - by phone Jon Brinkmann - by phone Visitors: Nicole Spohn (German TV) Rainer Bauer (German TV) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! It looks like imaging tonight. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A photometric night. Finished stripe 76 S. Did part of 82 N before clouds came in, and got a BD calibration scan (under photometric conditions and good seeing). Had various problems that impacted our efficiency somewhat. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Mounted the imager before sunset, since the clouds were dissipating. German TV film crew on-site during opening. They left at the end of twilight. Camron reported sub arcsec seeing at twilight...everything looked good for imaging. 20:08 - started a drift, but out-of-focus donuts didn't look very good. Tried homing & relaxing the primary. Started a new drift. Images still looked comatic . We then thought the secondary wasn't moving & called Russell, but while talking to him, we saw that the primary numbers hadn't moved during homing and were out of spec. In fact, the primary was off air. We called French. It turned out that during afternoon checkout, we switched from PMSS dessicant cannister 2 to dessicant cannister 1, but only turned the valve near the cannister labels...not the upper valve as well. We set the valves correctly and labeled the upper valve so hopefully it is now clear that both need to be switched. Imaged stripe 78 S under good seeing...subarcsecond in i' for most of the drift and 'good' throughout, according to son-of-Kent. Details are in the ''imaging details section''. Ended the drift at lambda -176. This stripe is done. 01:35 - We then started 86 S, but it was really too late to start, so we ended the drift right away and went to do JEG's BD calibration. 01:56 - Ended the BD calibration. Here is the info on where the frames are stored: Copying BD17 calib frames --------------------------- After going through headers of r4 frames, I found that frame 21 RA = 333.07910 1st row - Right ascension of telescope boresighDEC = 17.525320 Therefore, we saved, r4 frame 15-23 i4 frame 21-25 u4 frame 17, 19-27 z4 frame 25-29 g4 frame 27-31 in /data/photo/optics/52170 with original file names. It is rather tedious to do getFrame and then look through the headeers for the right RA and DEC so that we know which frames to copy over. (In r4, the RA DEC closest to BD17's coordinate was in frame 21 instead of frame 17.) We will file a PR asking if we can get this done easier. 02:00 - Went to 82 N. Got out-of-focus donuts for jeg. Had a spontaneous rotator abort. This caused us to run past our ramp-up lambda, so we backed up & started again. Here is the info on where the donut frames are stored: The collimation looks good from the donuts. Donuts are saved also in /data/photo/optics/52170. Frame 10 --> + out of focus images Frame 14 --> - out of focus images We were going to redo the donuts so that we have precisely +/- out of focus images at the end of the last science, but we forgot to do so. We were not as precise in going symmetrically out-of-focus on both sides of the focus in the above frames. 03:10 - beginning of science on 82 N. 04:00 - We lost communications with sp 1. See the problems section. 04:30 - small clouds started to encroach on the area we were scanning. We kept going, since it was too late to change instruments and start spectroscopy, but we probably need to redo this stripe starting at lambda -145. 05:40 - ended the drift 06:45 - enclosure closed & telescope stowed. Imager in doghouse. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2561 100 O ignore 40.23 45.73 51 doghouse bias 2562 100 O bias 95.48 97.70 29 2563 76 S ignore 129.45 130.26 19 2564 76 S ignore 129.43 132.91 37 2565 76 S ignore 129.65 130.52 20 2566 76 S science 129.58 -175.71 379 2567 86 S ignore 137.73 138.47 17 2568 86 S calibration 146.04 145.71 39 BD 17 Calibration 2569 82 N engineering 168.75 171.32 31 2570 82 N science -167.55 -125.01 355 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Stripe 78 S - Run 2566 ----------- Focus & skippy good by frame 55. lambda 136.78 Start of Science at lambda 138. End of science at lambda -17 Stripe 82 N - Run 2569 ----------- 02:00 - Started 82 S, but at incorrect lambda. Stayed here long enough to get out-of-focus donuts for JEG. Had to clear rotator offsets from BD calibration scan. Frames 9-10 are +300 out of focus Frame 14 is -300 out of focus. Stripe 82 N - Run 2570 ----------- 02:15 - setting up - rotator & focus tweaks. During skippy, we saw the rotator had aborted. This happened at 02:23. This delay caused us to run past our ramp- up time. We backed up so that we could start science at the right lambda. 03:10 - ramp-up to science at frame 100. 03:20 - frame 114 - start of science. 04:30 - frame approx. 215, lambda -145, no longer photometric...will need to redo the stripe from lambda=-145. 05:40 - frame 347, lambda -125 ended drift. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot A PR was filed. PMSS: ----- Cannister 2 dessicant is pink. We switched the valve to cannister 1. This caused a problem with the PMSS, that was an operator error. Only the lower valve was switched over. The upper valve had no label, so was not switched over. This caused the primary to go off air. After phone calls to Russell and French, we realized what had happened. We made new labels for the second valve! TEAMSTER DIED: -------------- During our first drift, the teamster died at frame 64. teamster -force was issued, and that got things going again. Wanted '' '' Returning '''' We power cycled spectro 1 four times, jiggled cables and checked the MUX's. Note that although the port 1 connection was refused, it was available according to ''show port all'', so the problem is apparently at the camera end. We called Jon. He asked that we swap the serial cables at the rotator MUX to see if the problem then switched over to sp 2. We did so, and indeed, sp 2 then complained. We next switched the serial cables back, and reseated the sp1 serial cable at the spectrograph. We power-cycled again, and the connection was re-established. It could have been the power-cycling that did it, but we really suspect the serial cable connection, since we had power cycled at least 4 times before with no results. A PR was filed to have the connector cleaned.
