APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 10, 2001 (MJD 52254) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta ( swing ) Dan Long ( night ) Jurek Krzesinski ( night ) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A dark mostly photometric night with variable seeing. Lots of spectroscopy. Six plates declared done ( would have been 7 but for clouds late ), 724, 693, 412, 759, 765, and 568. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- It was clear most of the night, until 10:20. After which clouds quickly thickened, forcing us to close at 11:40. Strong winds and an approaching storm system from the west made for a night of variable seeing, ranging from 1.3 to 3 arcseconds, sometimes in the space of 10 minutes. This variability kept us doing spectroscopy all night. We got fiducial errors too large to correct following almost every slew to instrument change. In all the cases where I checked, the crossing errors during the track on target prior to the slew to instrument change were small enough to correct. No axis seemed favored for this treatment. More details in the problems section. Jurek's saoDisplay stopped updating following the guider flat on plate 568. Quitting that display didn't restore normal operation. Sop had to be exited and restarted. Once that was done only a simple version of the guider monitor would work. See the problem section for details. Got red monster and scattered light warning on first exposure( 12181 ), but the hand paddle was off. It was probably due to the exposure time being 25 rather than 15 minutes. Guide stars were seen on slew for all cartridges ( once we corrected the fiducial errors ). 9 412 had extra exposure taken to fill the time before the next plate was available( hence the booming (S/N)^2 ) Note all times now given in UT unless otherwise noted. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2769 100 O ignore 141.43 144.91 37 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:32 12177 0.0 bias 23:48 12178 0.0 bias ----- sequence 12179, plate 724 ------- 18.7 12.0 17.3 9.8 01:08 12179 10.0 flat 9.6 6.0 8.3 4.2 (52252) 01:10 12180 2.0 arc ------------------- 01:40 12181 1502.0 target 28.3 18.0 25.6 14.0 02:07 12182 1501.0 target 02:30 12183 1200.0 target ----- sequence 12184, plate 693 ------- 15.8 16.6 17.1 14.3 02:46 12184 10.0 flat 02:48 12185 2.0 arc 03:12 12186 1200.0 target 03:30 12187 903.0 target 03:45 12188 722.0 target 03:51 12189 240.0 smear ----- sequence 12190, plate 412 ------- 23.6 21.3 21.8 21.9 04:15 12190 10.0 flat 04:17 12191 2.0 arc 04:36 12192 900.0 target 04:49 12193 602.0 target 05:01 12194 602.0 target 05:19 12195 901.0 target 05:25 12196 240.0 smear 05:29 12197 10.0 flat 05:31 12198 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12199, plate 759 ------- 16.2 13.6 22.8 20.4 06:10 12199 10.0 flat 06:12 12200 2.0 arc 06:23 12201 240.0 smear 06:54 12202 1500.0 target 07:17 12203 1201.0 target 07:44 12204 1502.0 target 07:47 12205 10.0 flat 07:49 12206 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12207, plate 765 ------- 14.8 15.3 18.0 16.1 08:08 12207 10.0 flat 08:10 12208 2.0 arc 08:29 12209 900.0 target 08:43 12210 702.0 target 08:56 12211 601.0 target 09:03 12212 240.0 smear ----- sequence 12213, plate -9999 ------- 09:23 12213 0.0 bias ----- sequence 12214, plate 568 ------- 7.6 5.4 5.6 4.0 09:45 12214 10.0 flat 16.7 13.5 12.9 10.2 (52253) 09:47 12215 2.0 arc ------------------- 10:06 12216 900.0 target 24.3 18.9 18.7 14.2 ----- sequence 12217, plate 555 ------- 13.5 10.0 13.6 10.2 10:32 12217 10.0 flat 10:34 12218 2.0 arc 10:52 12219 901.0 target 11:09 12220 901.0 target 11:38 12221 1203.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- getclock Axis position and calibration offset Scale Time Ct Plate time Az El Rot Factor 01:08 3 724 1008032908 -12.21 .0031 47.13 .0001 169.59 -.0074 0.999710 02:52 6 693 1008039124 -3.80 .0035 57.14 .0007 176.77 -.0111 0.999850 04:28 9 412 1008044912 11.73 .0084 56.64 -.0010 189.82 .0066 0.999740 06:30 1 759 1008052200 113.91 .0006 48.63 -.0008 -97.60 -.0112 1.000130 08:14 2 765 1008058470 131.44 -.0009 57.01 -.0041 -74.71 -.0165 0.999930 09:50 8 568 1008064227 35.85 .0013 55.48 .0003 209.53 .0001 1.000100 10:48 7 555 1008067684 170.71 -.0060 67.40 .0026 -13.62 -.0248 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- endNight -doSpecto -doTpm rejoiced. Doing a stopMon, startMon, showGuiderFrame, yielded an error about star 2 not fitting in the region. sp1> stopMon sp1> startMon sp1> showGuiderFrame Error: Star 2 won't fit in an 450*450 region, scaled 150 After quitting and restarting sop, he got startMon -simple to display new images, but the normal startMon would not work. This was still true after taking another guider flat as well. Another quirk associated with this plate, is that SoS thinks the plate number is zero. Could it be the plug-map file has been corrupted? Looking at last night's log, it seemed to work OK then. ============================================================================== Fiducial error problem: Looking at the sdssmcp lines from the murmur log, prior to the instChange slew, all the fiducial errors are well under the limit for applying corrections. As soon as the slew starts, one sees a -552 adjustment to azimuth, a 269 adjustment to altitude, and a -197 adjustment to the rotator. These are all larger than the errors reported on the last fiducial crossings ( not corrected because the telescope was tracking ). The first fiducial crossings during the slew to instrument change then complain about an error too large to correct in both azimuth and rotator, and both were negative. It seems there is still some initialization problem at the beginning of some slews, at least similar to what is described in PR mcp/2947. Note that a similar problem happened with nearly every instChange ( murmur log time stamps ~20:55, 21:01, 22:33, 00:51, 02:05, 03:09 ) Dec 10 20:52:28 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial -29.38 deg Dec 10 20:52:28 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo err = 185 poserr = 190 ticks Dec 10 20:54:01 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Intermediate rot fiducial 155.12 deg Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo azimuth MS.OFF scheduled: 0 Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Resetting amp for axis azimuth: 0 Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo azimuth MS.OFF Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Resetting amp for axis azimuth: 1 Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Adjusting azimuth's encoder 1 by -552 Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Adjusting azimuth's encoder 2 by 217 Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Adjusting altitude's encoder 1 by 269 Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Adjusting altitude's encoder 2 by 46 Dec 10 20:55:18 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Adjusting rotator's encoder 1 by -197 Dec 10 20:55:19 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo altitude MS.OFF scheduled: 0 Dec 10 20:55:19 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Resetting amp for axis altitude: 2 Dec 10 20:55:19 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo altitude MS.OFF Dec 10 20:55:19 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Resetting amp for axis altitude: 3 Dec 10 20:55:21 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo rotator MS.OFF scheduled: 0 Dec 10 20:55:21 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Resetting amp for axis rotator: 4 Dec 10 20:55:21 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo rotator MS.OFF Dec 10 20:55:22 sdssmcp tmAz dsc_I_trcInfo throttled 4 -- CALC FRAME: next frame required to finish Dec 10 20:55:22 sdssmcp tmAz dsc_I_trcInfo CALC FRAME: next frame required to finish Dec 10 20:55:22 sdssmcp tmAlt dsc_I_trcInfo (throttle) CALC FRAME: next frame required to finish Dec 10 20:55:22 sdssmcp tmAz dsc_I_trcInfo azimuth frame_break: frames left=4 Dec 10 20:55:22 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo rotator frame_break: frames left=4 Dec 10 20:55:22 sdssmcp tmAlt dsc_I_trcInfo altitude frame_break: frames left=4 Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo azimuth MS.OFF scheduled: 0 Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo azimuth MS.OFF Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo DRIFT azimuth: -30.494386 0.000000 14159.656780 Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo altitude MS.OFF scheduled: 0 Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo altitude MS.OFF Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo DRIFT altitude: 53.235669 0.000000 14159.850520 Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo rotator MS.OFF scheduled: 0 Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo rotator MS.OFF Dec 10 20:55:27 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo DRIFT rotator: 154.704044 0.000000 14160.000530 Dec 10 20:55:28 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo azimuth MS.ON Dec 10 20:55:28 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction -190 to azimuth Dec 10 20:55:28 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo altitude MS.ON Dec 10 20:55:28 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo rotator MS.ON Dec 10 20:55:28 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction -20 to rotator Dec 10 20:55:32 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo azimuth MS.OFF scheduled: 84 Dec 10 20:55:32 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo altitude MS.OFF scheduled: 84 Dec 10 20:55:32 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo rotator MS.OFF scheduled: 84 Dec 10 20:55:34 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo azimuth: took 2 attempts to read MEI latch status Dec 10 20:55:34 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial -29.38 deg Dec 10 20:55:34 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo err = 1314 poserr = 1314 ticks Dec 10 20:55:34 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction -1314 to azimuth Dec 10 20:55:34 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_E_trcErr correction for azimuth -1314 is too large Dec 10 20:55:34 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_W_trcWarn Not disabling MS.ON;
